2. My main female
In the opening shot, Isabel is pictured from a low
angle walking confidently towards the door in a pair
of patent black heels with red bottoms. The lighting
is dark and ominous, also tinted red. (having
connotations of danger and passion).
This shows a modern representation of a woman as
she appears strong and independent. However, she
retains an element of traditional representation with
her heels and provocative walk.
The slamming sound of the door is loud and definite
which gives a modern representation of women
because she deliberately shuts it herself.
In this shot, strong eye contact is being given
to Sam. This is a modern representation of her
gender due to it implying power and
dominance. Her costume- a white shirt- is also
masculine.
However, a traditional representation is evident
due to the makeup. Red lipstick is extremely
feminine and so is mascara which exaggerates
the eyelashes.
This two shot of Isabel and Sam emphasises the difference
in body language. While Sam is reserved, looking down
and guarded with his arms crossed, Isabel contrasts this.
She shows a modern representation of women due to
particularly confident body language. She holds strong eye
contact with Sam, leans onto the table and holds her
cigarette in a relaxed, unapologetic manner.
However, here we see Isabelโs low cut shirt which is
provocative and shows a partially traditional representation
of her gender.
This shot included an object of significance in the
foreground, a pool table. The game of pool is often
considered masculine and for Isabel to be
associated with is shows a modern representation
of her gender.
Isabel pulls Sam in by his brace, showing force and
dominance which is a modern representation of
women.
However, the suggested seductive intent behind
the move is traditional.
This close up of Isabel includes a shot merged into
the right hand side with a blend mode which
focuses on the lips.
This is a particularly femenine symbol and shows a
traditional representation of her gender, despite
the topic of conversation within the shot showing a
modern representation.
The shot that appears on the right of the shot
transitions with a fade in and fade out, showing
delicacy and a traditional representation of her.
In the final shot in which filming fades to
black, Isabel is sat in a large black office
chair. This has connotations of business and
importance, showing a modern
representation of females.
She initiates the fade to black by swivelling
the chair, showing power within the shot.
This again is a display of a masculine nature
and is again a modern representation of her
gender.
3. My main male
In this shot, Samโs body language is reserved
and almost defensive as he looks down and
has his arms crossed in front of him. This
shows a traditional representation of his
gender by acting masculine through hostility.
His body language is also hunched which
makes his arms appear larger and more
masculine, which is similarly a traditional
representation.
This is the first shot where Samโs costume becomes
clear. A clean white shirt and braces are classically male
and is therefore a traditional representation of males.
Samโs eye-line in this shot is at Isabelโs mouth, which
shows that he is sexually intrigued by her and is therefore
a traditional representation of males as he displays his
heterosexuality.
The levelling of this shot gives Isabel more power than
Sam and therefore shows a modern representation of
men as he lacks the power in this situation, stripping
him of his masculinity.
However Samโs eye-line in this shot is at Isabelโs
body, which shows that he is sexually intrigued by her
and is therefore a traditional representation of males
as he displays his heterosexuality.
The lighting in this shot is particularly red due to the tone of the pool
table and staircase exaggerating the tone. Red has connotations of
passion and danger, two themes of the opening and therefore the sexual
intent shows a traditional representation of males and his heterosexual
nature.
Sam leans over Isabel in this show and shows dominance which is
traditional, although Isabel shows dominance by pulling him in and
showing force, giving a slightly modern representation of males.
This shotโs angle shows Sam in the foreground, making him appear
larger and more dominating as he moves in closer to Isabel. This
shows a traditional representation of his gender by appearing the
more dominant in the shot.
Sam moving slowly in towards Isabel shows that he is sexually
intrigued by her and is therefore a traditional representation of males
as he displays his heterosexuality.
