Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Females
Girls, Trauma, and PTSD
Injury is frequent in women; five out of ten girls experience a posttraumatic stress disorder
distressing event. Girls tend to see traumas that are different than men. While both women and men
report precisely the same symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (hyperarousal, re-
experiencing, avoidance, and numbing), some symptoms are far more common for girls or men.
History
Most early info on injury and PTSD came from studies of men Veterans, mainly Vietnam Veterans.
Investigators identified that ladies responses were similar to combat Veterans that were male and
started to examine the consequences of sex assault. Women's experiences of injury also can cause
PTSD. This finding led to more study on women's exposure to trauma and PTSD.
Sexual assault is more likely to cause PTSD than a number of other events.
Girls may be prone to blame themselves for injury experiences than guys.
What are the results after injury
Girls are somewhat more than likely to experience sexual attack.
Following a trauma, some girls start drinking or using medications, might feel depressed, or develop
post-traumatic stress disorder. Women are more than twice as likely to develop post-traumatic stress
disorder than men (10% for women and 4% for men). There are a number of reasons men may not
get more that are posttraumatic stress disorder than women:
Risk of experiencing injury
Findings from a nationwide mental-health study that is large show that a little more than half of all
women will experience a minumum of one traumatic event in their life. Women are somewhat less
likely to see trauma than men. The most common injury for women is sexual assault or child sexual
abuse. About one in three girls will experience a sexual assault within their life. Speeds of sexual
assault are greater for women than men. Girls are also more likely to possess a family member
unexpectedly expire or abused in youth, to experience domestic violence, or to be neglected.
Why are some girls at higher-risk for posttraumatic stress disorder?
Maybe not all women who experience a traumatic occasion develop posttraumatic stress disorder.
Women are much more likely to develop PTSD if they:
Have a previous mental health problem (for example depression or stress)

Experienced a very serious or life threatening injury
Were sexually assaulted
http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=Posttraumatic_Stress_Disorder
Were hurt during the event
Had a serious reaction at that time of the event
Experienced stressful events that were other afterward
Don't have social support that is good
Treatment for PTSD
There are good treatments for PTSD. Nevertheless, not everybody who experiences a trauma seeks
treatment. At least one study discovered that women respond to therapy as good as or better than
men. This could be because women are often more comfortable talking with others than men about
things that are personal and discussing feelings.
Girls in the military
Women in the military are at high-risk for exposure to traumatic events, especially during times of
warfare. Now, about 1-5% of all military personnel in Iraq are girls. Even though men are more
prone to experience combat, a growing amount of girls are now being exposed to fight. Women in
the armed forces are at higher danger of sexual assault than men or exposure to sexual-harassment.
Potential studies are needed to better comprehend the effects of women's exposure to both combat
and sexual assault.
What post-traumatic stress disorder is like for women
Some PTSD symptoms are somewhat more common in girls than guys. Girls are far more likely to
have more trouble feeling feelings to be jumpy, and to avoid things that remind them of the trauma
than guys. Men are really prone to have problems controlling their anger then women and to feel
upset. Women with post-traumatic stress disorder are far more likely bipolar test to feel depressed
and apprehensive, while men with PTSD tend to be more likely to possess problems with substances
or Heal Developmental Trauma alcohol. Both men and women who experience PTSD may develop
health concerns that are physical.
