2. A short film is not as long as a full feature film. There is not a limit of how long
the short film should last.
A short films purpose is there to entertain in the smallest time possible and also
there to inform if it is a documentary.
The platforms for a short film are:
•YouTube – this platform is a massive way to promote as the amount of visitors
that site gets on a daily basis is massive, so will hit a massive audience.
•Internet - Internet will reach the audience the fastest as everybody, every
minute of the day is on.
•Cinema’s
e.g. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_KYiNXHrks This is a short film of
‘The Awake’.
3. A promotional video is something that promotes a product or a item, such as a short
promo video for a new watch that is aimed at men.
e.g. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed7igyQnR8w This promo for this watch
shows that it is waterproof and basically promo’s the company.
The platforms that these videos can be seen are:
•Internet – the biggest site that people visit, so the companies that are promoting
are obviously going to put them on the internet.

•Tv – biggest audience so another good place to advertise.
•Newsletters from the company - a newsletter from the company is the best way to
promote as its directly from the company promoting the product and then they can
also promote other products they sell.

•Cinema
•YouTube and before a video plays (Advert)
•Cinema Newsletters – Promotion from the actual company, which will help to
promote more films by sending them the trailers.
•Facebook
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uABsht2bgY
This is a example of a film trailer, from the
Indiana Jones film – raiders of the lost ark.
5. The public generate content every minute of the day, whether its a video of a
dancing goose to a clip of them singing in the mirror.
They will either upload it to face book for their friends to see or... Post it on 1
of the bigger sites such as instagram or YouTube.
Web 2.0 – a website that uses technology beyond the static
pages of earlier web sites.
You tube – YouTube is the biggest video/movie platform in the
world, people will add videos for people to see, like and
comment and also share to the world.
Video – video is something that can be recorded on a phone,
video camera and now even on your laptop.
6. Viral marketing is when a product or a item is added to a social media site and it goes
viral, round the whole world in minutes.
A post/tweet on Facebook or twitter of something funny will be shared by millions if not
thousands of people and it will go viral as a lot of people have shared that 1 picture or
video.
Platforms for this are:
•Facebook – Huge following on Facebook which can hit a lot of viewers in minutes.
• Twitter – Twitter has thousands/millions of people online every minute of the day and if
a tweet gets a million retweets, you will never know how many shares it has had to
millions of other people on the social network.
e.g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIQT
oVqDMb8
If this video was put on Facebook it would
of went viral in minutes.
7. Advertising is a big part of a product as it needs to be advertised for people to
know what it is, how much and when it will be available.
Billboards are a great way of doing this as they can be across 1 of the biggest
motorways in your city/country and the amount of traffic that will see it, will
make a big impact on your product.
Platforms:
•Billboards
•Internet
•Email
Mobile Phone
YouTube
DVD
8. Virtual reality tours are a internet generated picture of a
product, place or city.
Holiday Destination – a computer will show you a 90⁰ picture
exactly of what your resort looks like.
Google maps – Google maps will give you a look of the world,
just be computer generated image of each street, city and part of
the world.
9. A video game is played on a console (Wii or PS3) which is very highly
animated and has a very high graphics rating.
A example of a few video games are:
Call Of Duty
Fast and Furious
Lego Collection – Batman or Indiana Jones
Video games are a very big thing in this day in age, the amount of video
games and consoles that are on the market now are phenomenal.
Platforms:
•Wii
•PS3
•Nintendo DS
•PC
•Xbox
10. Moodle – Moodle is a educational site were tutors and
students can post there work and learning outcome on for
each other to have a look at.
Education posting - education posting is a website set up
by your college, where tutors will add all assignments and
grading systems for students to look at and also post work
onto. Gateshead college has Moodle as their education
posting site, different college will have different posting
sites or some may have the same.
YouTube – YouTube can be the main source for video to
date, a lot of college tutors will show tutorials and how to
do things, off a YouTube clip.
11. Firewire cable – a fire wire cable will allow you to digitally capture a video
that has been recorded onto a camera. What you would need to do is plug
you camera into a laptop and then open your specific software you are
using and then using that cable you can transfer your video straight from
the camera to the laptop to save or even better to edit it to put on a
educational site or media platform.
Transferring video from tape to digital –
12. Video compression uses modern coding techniques to reduce
redundancy in video data.
Basically video compression, squeezes the massive file together
and makes the file size smaller but keeps the same quality to play.
Lossy – lossy is a what happens when you compress a file, you
keep the same file and not loose any data, but will come in a lower
quality once it has been compressed.
Lossless – Loseless is another way of compressing, it will compress
the video and you may loose some data but will make the quality
of the video better
13. These are some of the file formats used when recording video or even converting them, from 1 file
to another. All of these file formats can be used when creating video and are all recognised by
windows computer and some of them may be recognised on a Mac.
Mpg - .mpg, one of a number of file extensions for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 audio and video compression.
Mp4 - MP4 is a digital multimedia format most commonly used to store video and audio, but can
also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.
Mov - mov, filename extension for the QuickTime multimedia file format.
Avi - Audio Video Interleave, a multimedia container format and file type
Wmv – WMV is a video compression format for several proprietary codecs developed by Microsoft
Asf - Advanced Systems Format (formerly "Advanced Streaming Format", .asf), a Microsoft streaming
format associated with Windows Media Player.
14. Downloading is basically going onto the internet and finding something that you
want e.g.. A application for a job, you would download it and would appear straight
on your desktop to look at, same goes for music or video.
Progressive downloading - A progressive download is the transfer of digital media
files from a server to a client, typically using the HTTP protocol when initiated from a
computer.
Streaming - Video streaming is a streaming of frame one by one. A example of
streaming video is on sky TV, if you want to stream a video from their collection,
what you do is you click on the film you want and you stream it. When it starts to
play it will start to stream right until the end which means it downloads the rest as
you watch just like downloading videos off sky.
Sky is prime example of downloading and streaming for videos. Also Ustream is
another web platform you can use to stream live videos to whoever has the link to
access it.
15. The data transfer rate (DTR) is the amount of digital data that is moved from one
place to another in a given time. The data transfer rate can be viewed as the
speed of travel of a given amount of data from one place to another. In general,
the greater the bandwidth of a given path, the higher the data transfer rate.
16 kbit/s – videophone quality (minimum necessary for a consumer-acceptable
"talking head" picture using various video compression schemes)
128–384 kbit/s – business-oriented videoconferencing quality using video
compression
1.5 Mbit/s max – VCD quality (using MPEG1 compression)
3.5 Mbit/s typ — Standard-definition television quality (with bit-rate reduction
from MPEG-2 compression)
9.8 Mbit/s max – DVD (using MPEG2 compression)
8 to 15 Mbit/s typ – HDTV quality (with bit-rate reduction from MPEG-4 AVC
compression)
19 Mbit/s approximate — HDV 720p (using MPEG2 compression)
24 Mbit/s max — AVCHD (using MPEG4 AVC compression)
25 Mbit/s approximate — HDV 1080i (using MPEG2 compression)
29.4 Mbit/s max – HD DVD
40 Mbit/s max – Blu-ray Disc (using MPEG2, AVC or VC-1 compression)
This list above shows all of the rates that videos play and record at.
16. Resolution – these are some of the resolutions options of a digital camera.
1080p = 1920x1080 pixels (16:9)
960p = 1280x960 pixels (4:3)
720p = 1280x720 pixels (16:9)
720p = 1280x720 pixels (16:9)
WVGA = 848x480 pixels (16:9)
Data rate – data rate is the rate at which information is being transferred
Frame rate - frame rate is the rate that a digital camera produces unique
consecutives images called frames, Frame rate is most often expressed in
frames per second (FPS).
Key frame rate – a key frame rate is having a start and a end to a film and
making it run smoothly from your starting point to the end.
Compressor - video compression, squeezes the massive file together and
makes the file size smaller but keeps the same quality to play.
17. Aspect ratio is basically the picture of a video and how big it is going to be. E.g
12” inch screen will play 12” inch video’s
4.3 is the old style TV size as back in them days, when them TV's were being
made they did not have the technology to make them bigger and produce better
picture quality.
16.9 is the widescreen TV picture size, as now they have the technology that they
didn't have many years ago to create bigger screens and better pictures.
30/40/50 inch TV’s - the screens and picture quality on these now is just
incredible, the way they are made to create better picture and quality just
determines the price as these sizes are quite pricey, anything between £4/5/600.
18. Flash player - Flash® Player is a lightweight browser plug-in and rich Internet application runtime
that delivers consistent and engaging user experiences, stunning audio/video playback, and
exciting game play. – flash player is used on most websites you visit now eg.
(facebook,youtube,twitter) and much much more.
QuickTime - A powerful multimedia technology with a built-in media player, QuickTime lets you
view Internet video, HD movie trailers and personal media in a wide range of file formats. And it
lets you enjoy them in remarkably high quality. – QuickTime loads faster than flash player and
mainly used on apple devices
Wmp - Windows Media Player (WMP) is a media player and media library application developed
by Microsoft that is used for playing audio, video and viewing images on personal computers
running the Microsoft Windows operating system, as well as on Pocket PC and Windows Mobilebased devices. – WMP is mainly used on windows computers and can sometimes be very slow
where as other programs on the market can make watching videos more enjoyable and most of
all, a lot faster.
Out of all of the programs, i would use QuickTime as it is so much more reliable than other
products because apple have made it to the standards where people should never have a
problem with it, they put a lot of money and effort into making products and expecting them to
work perfectly 1st time, most of the time they do but sometimes fail quite a lot. Personal
preference really, its what your prefer but most of all the cost, all of these programs are free to
download off the internet.
19. Download a video and only have your own permissions – a video that has been
placed on YouTube of yours, gives the right of nobody else downloading off a site
because it is not theirs to have.
Protected content is a way of making sure that people don't pinch your item,
protecting a video means that people can watch it, as many times as they want
but cant use it without your permission. It is best to have all your data protected
so that people cant claim that it is theirs.
The Benefits of protecting and having your own permission on content means
that you can put it all over the world, without anybody claiming that it is theirs, if
they do and you can prove its yours you can charge them for not asking your
permission to use it.
Media producers these days will protect their cd/media/video straight away so
they are covered, producers these days create music and videos from scratch, they
don't want to put online for somebody to steal and claim its theirs so if they
protect it before they put it out, they wont have any problems.
