Containers are everywhere. But what exactly is a container? What are they made from? What's the difference between LXC, butts-nspawn, Docker, and the other container systems out there? And why should we bother about specific filesystems? In this talk, Jérôme will show the individual roles and behaviors of the components making up a container: namespaces, control groups, and copy-on-write systems. Then, he will use them to assemble a container from scratch, and highlight the differences (and likelinesses) with existing container systems.

And scaling performance meant relying on best practices and gut-feeling hunches. Our digital world is growing rapidly and we have more devices connected to the internet than ever. On top of that each second 80 new devices are added, which introduces new challenges to communication between these devices. MQTT is a lightweight and scalable protocol that shifts the request/response paradigm of the web as it is today to an event-driven publish and subscribe architecture, which is a perfect fit for Internet of Things and M2M use cases. This talk answers the following three questions: Why do we need a paradigm shift, HTTP has been proven to be a good fit for the web? What is MQTT and how does it help to overcome the challenges we have today? How can everybody build their own MQTT application with the Eclipse Paho implementation? In the last part we will dive into the Eclipse Paho code and round up the talk with an live demonstration.

Service mesh is a powerful pattern for implementing strong zero-trust networking practices, introducing better network observability, and allowing for more fine-grained traffic control. Up until now, the sidecar pattern was used to implement service-mesh capability but as the technology matures, a new pattern has emerged: sidecarless service mesh. Two prominent open-source networking projects, Cilium and Istio, have implemented a sidecar-free approach to service mesh but they both make interesting design decisions and tradeoffs. In this talk we review the architecture of both, focusing on the pros and cons of implementations such as mutual authentication, ingress, and observability.
