2. Mission
:”to enable all young people, especially those
who need us most, to reach their full potential as
productive, caring, responsible citizens.”
The BGCA believes that they should provide A
safe place to learn and grow, Ongoing
relationships with caring professionals, Life-
enhancing programs and character
development experiences, and hope and
opportunity.
3. Founders
The Boys and Girls Club of America was originally
just “Boys Club Federation”. This was founded in
1860 by three women with the names of Mary
Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, and Elizabeth
Hammersley. The first club was started in Hartford,
Conn.
To recognize the face that girls are a part of the
cause, the national organizations name was
changed to Boys and Girls Clubs of America in
1990.
4. Facts and Figures
Boys and Girls Clubs annually serve nearly 4
million young people, through membership and
community outreach, in some 4,000 Club facilities
throughout the country and BGCA- affiliated
Youth Centers on U.S. military installations
worldwide.
There are around 4,074 chartered Club facilities,
including approximately: 1,400 in schools, 400
youth centers on military installations world-wide,
300 in public housing, and 200 on Native
American lands.
5. Facts and Figures cont.
In the youth that we serve… 5% are 5 years old
and under, 46% are 6-10 years old, 20% are 11-12
years old, 19% are 13-15 years old, 10% are 16
and older, 55% are male, and 45% are female.
The ethnicity of the youth served is diverse
including… 31% are Caucasian, 29% are African
America, 23% are Hispanic/Latino, 5 % are Multi-
racial, 3% are Asian-American, and 3% are
American Indian or Alaska Native.
