Vaqueros have a long history here. It started with
the Spaniards who came long before Texas
belonged to the United States. Cowboys came
much later and learned a lot of what they know
from vaqueros.

driving cattle, he worked on a ranch

3. The great Texas cattle drives of the 1860's through the
1890's made Texas cowboys and vaqueros famous.

sounds like "vaca" at the beginning? That's because it
comes from the Spanish word "vaca" which means
"cow." In Spanish to add "ero" to the ending makes a
word mean "worker."
