Hello I am Anna and I know that you are expecting Waleed, but although he appears online it seems that he's not here...
So I am afraid that this is not a session but an investigation room, since I'll try to solve the mystery of Waleed's presentation!
First of all, let me introduce my self... I am Anna Krassa, I started my collaboration with GCA as HRD Moodle Partner collaborator, back on 2007.
My first role in GCA was the role of a facilitator. Later on my role changed to Learning Developer. Normally I look like the person on the left but now just for this session I think I am going to take over the role of the "mystery investigator" and if I found Waleed, the role of the "interrogator".
To be honest I haven't done this before, so I am going to get some guidelines from wikihow...
Step 1: Find a mystery... ok well we have that already Waleed booked for a presentation but didn't share any further information
Step 2: Grab some friends... ok I am taking all of you with me!
Step 3: Get a detective kit... hmm...ok... I am already wearing my suit and you can’t see it but I have my magnifying glass all ready
Step 4: Search the actual scene... well, we are all here together, so I hope you will help me out looking for clues!
And Step 5: Wright down everythingrelated to your case...
So, let's start with the basics... and see if we can track any clues...
What do we know about the "subject"...
Name: Waleed Jameel
Location: Dubai, UAE
Characteristics: Black beard, spectacles... ? tie
Personal Roles: Husband of talented Zeba and father of three non-stop kids
Professional Roles: GCA Business Manager and IT geek

Aha! GCA! I think we have just detected a clue! Let's start by identifying GCA...
GCA stands for GAC Corporate Academy, so it's the corporate learning organisation of the GAC Group and its current tagline is “Delivering your learning strategy.”
GCA was established in 2007, when GAC committed itself to learning and development as a priority and decided that the best way to train its people is using asynchronous e-learning courses
90% of the GCA courses are held online through GAClearn. The other 10% are face-to-face workshops.
And of course, it utilises Moodle.
For 7 years GCA is continuously developing and now it consists of
7 full time staff,
15+ external facilitators,
runs around 100 courses per year and
With a bit of detective work I have found the GCA website and learned that...
“GAC Corporate Academy (GCA) is the corporate learning organisation of the GAC Group. It operates as a semi-autonomous business unit as part of GAC Corporate Head Office based in Jebel Ali, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.”
ok. well I don't think that helped much our investigation...
... so I guess we need to continue, and specify what GAC is...
GAC stands for Gulf Agency Company. The GAC Group It provides integrated services of Shipping, Marine and Logistics around the world and its current tagline is "Delivering your strategy."
GAC Group consists of more than 10,000 professionals who speak more than 100 languages and are spread in more than 300 offices in 40 countries.
Hmm... sounds big... and given that heterogeneity how it is possible to ensured the effective running of the Group? I am wondering what kind of organisational culture it has?
Hmmm... Let me check my notes about this...
Hmmm... Let me check my notes about this...
Ok.... found it...
There is a 5 year strategic plan, currently called Vision Z-Global Performance and a common Strategic Management System, called GAC TIME.
GAC TIME stands for Total Innovative Management Excellence and it plays a central role in ensuring that people across the GAC World understand the important things that make our business successful.
Since the current theme of the Group is Performance, GAC is very interested in measuring its performance, both internally and externally. That’s where GAC TIME comes in because it forms the basis of the GAC culture of measurement.
Hmm... GAC culture of measurement...well this sounds like a key sentence, but unfortunately it is not really my thing....
Hold on, I got an idea, since Waleed is not responding here, perhaps...
Perhaps I find him on skype...
What's in his status? ISO Audit? What's that?
Well, I am going to knock him, anyway...
“Where are you Waleed, we are expecting you in iMoot...”
WJ: Hello, hello, I am here.... sorry I have been extra busy these days with ISO audit
Hello Waleed, glad you joined us! What's the ISO audit?
ISO is the International Organisation for Standardisation and their role is to develop standards that can be applied throughout the world. There are general standards, and also standards for particular industries.
Our ISO auditing process meant putting together all the things we do in GCA in alignment with the international standards... this includes standards for how we manage data, standards for how we design learning programmes, standards for who we get to run our learning programmes, how we deal with our learning participants (our customers) and our stakeholders this was a very rigorous process which took the best part of 6 months.
ISO 29990 is a standard for non-formal learning organisations and there are less than 30 certified organisations in the world.
Ok, and what has GCA to do with ISO Audit?
ISO is a fantastic opportunity for us to bring consistency and measurement rigor into what we do.
Over the last 7 years we have gotten better and better at developing processes - like the way we develop courses, the way we enrol participants, the way we interact with our GLOs* and Facilitators
This ISO certification is like the icing on the cake, if you like it has made us improve our processes even further, and now holds us accountable for sticking to them.
This is good because we are ultimately accountable for what we do to GAC.
* GLO is a GCA Liaison Officer - they support the implementation of GCA programmes in the GAC companies
But, why measurement is so important to GCA?"
well it's quite simple: if you can measure it you can manage it and if you manage it you can improve it
This actually leads on from what I said before because GAC is very focused on being a performance-focused organisation and one of the key elements of performance is being able to MEASURE, we have to be able to see where we are now, where we want to get to and how we will get there then we have to be able to measure whether we have reached there or not so as part of GAC.
GCA also needs to be focused on measurement because one of the Critical Success Factors relates to trained and motivated personnel but our courses actually build the skills of GAC people to get better at all of the critical success factors...
Whether they are building more satisfied customers, being more cost efficient, working according to our HSSE plan etc
Great, so can you give us some examples on how you measure things in GCA?
ok we have to measure both INTERNAL processes and
EXTERNAL results.
internal processes about how we develop courses, enrol participants etc (like i mentioned before) and
externally we have to measure the training hours achieved by participants, the level of engagement of our GLOs, etc.
Better course evaluation (using Kirkpatrick model, 3 month), creating data management processes for evaluations
financial measurement as well since we are a cost recovery centre.
ISO has helped us to refine our systems for all of these things
So, with all these in mind, how did the ISO audit go?
ISO 29990 is a standard for non-formal learning organisations and there are less than 35 certified organisations in the world.
And I would like to share with you that GCA is now one of them! And actually we are now the first in the Middle East.
