Brand experience
The experience that transmits a brand serves to reduce uncertainty and ensure attraction by association.
Therefore, the experience goes beyond the brand itself
Mainly includes the brand and its communication, but that experience is relevant if it honestly becomes to
live, and this is demonstrated through the products, services, utility and the value equation that people make
regarding the relationship “what they pay for what they get” (as expected and perceived quality)
Why this survey
This survey considers these factors, and weighted and valued each of them for the brand that creates the best
brand experience for each participant and in relation to the experience offered by the company in which
he/she works
Who conducted the survey
The survey and subsequent analysis were made by Allegro 234, company focused on strategic marketing,
branding and innovation, with head quarters in Madrid, Spain
Methodology
Online bilingual English/Spanish survey, with closed and open questions, including data gathering about each
participant
The results presented are those that are relevant in average and whose variance is within acceptable limits

Given the nature of this online survey, we would like to thank all those who give the platform and/or
announce the survey, helping to its realization
Among them: AllTop, BlogCatalog, Brand 3.0 Brand Innovator, CMO Network, Digg, FaceBook, Inususal Jack

The Coolest & Gaps Branding Survey
It was developed between 10/23/08 and 11/23/08
The main intentions were to know and build the ranking of the coolest brand experiences and to
understand the gaps between those and the ones generated by the companies that we are
working in
The participants (1,309) who seriously devoted their time to answer the survey
There were 1,314 participants from 39 different countries from the Americas, Asia and Europe
Five surveys were deleted because of notorious inconsistencies (a politically correct rationale)
Limitations
The analysis was done considering people who is working in areas related with branding and
people who work in other areas of the companies (e.g.: financial, administration)
The results by sector did not show differences that justify their independent analysis
The Coolest & Gaps Branding Survey

General Coolest
The gaps | Overview
Las diferencias | General
Opening the coolest brand experiences in their components, it is observed:
The basis of the experience is in the product, its quality, the value given to it and how the offer is
communicated
It is expected and/or perceived that those experiences could provide more associated services,
the small print of the guaranties remains as a disturbing factor, and it is recognized that due to
the brand and its aspirational prices are higher
The difference, that is observed between the coolest brand experiences and the ones
generated by the companies where the participants work, shows:
It is generally recognized that every company has to do something to create an experience as
relevant as the one from the coolest brands
The biggest differences are in the product, communication in general and the value proposition
synthesized by the brand
Instead that there is little difference, where most businesses are close to the “coolest” is in the
usefulness of their offer

General Related to branding Others
The gaps | According to the role of participant
Las diferencias | Según la función del participante
It is interesting to note the differences in perception between people working in areas
related to the brand and those working in other areas of the company
In general, the ones who are working in related areas are more pessimistic to assess the gap that
exists with the coolest brand experience
While those who are working in non-related areas, consider that the functional component of their
offers are better than the average, although they recognize that they are far from the ideal
experience
There is a change in the point of view when the participants talk about the value proposition
summarized in their brands. In this case, those in areas related to the brand consider that their
brands are in a better position than the average

The gaps | Internal branding
Las diferencias | Branding interno
Regarding how the brand is lived internally, there are also significant differences
In average, nearly 60% recognized that the experience is not lived or partially lived internally
Less than 30% of those working in areas related to the brand consider that the experience is lived
internally
And conversely, almost 70% of those working in non-related areas, believe that the brand
experience is lived in their companies

Conclusions | The coolest brand experiences
Conclusiones | Las experiencias de marca más “cool”
Since this was an open question survey, the mention of each coolest brand was spontaneously
Apple and Coca-Cola have been present in all countries where there were participants
Apple with its iPod and iPhone products doubled the number of mentions of Coca-Cola
Overall, the results show that people feel that experience is "cool" if they can live it with the five
senses
Few mentions of brands in the "online world"
There is a strong presence of two trends
• Being true whenever a person is exposed or interacts with the brand [Apple, Ferrari]
• You can have a fantasy while you do it well, as opposed to a real world that is basic, dirty and
threatening [Disney Ferrari as aspirational, Ferran Adrià]
Tribal brands have a significant presence
Apple
Virgin
Patagonia
Agent Provocateur
Communication is only part of the experience and this can be observed from the absence of
telecommunications company or financial institutions, whose budgets in mass communication are
often among the highest worldwide
12. 10090112_Allegro 234_Coolest and Gaps
Conclusions | The gaps
Conclusiones | Las diferencias
Before talking about the differences, it should be noted that even in the coolest brand, some aspects
are deficient
Related services: The basic experience is great, however, does not extend to services associated with it
Guarantees: The "small print" generate mistrust and thus lose credibility
The price: It is not a matter of decision, although it acknowledges that it is paid a “brand premium price”
Going to the differences, the behavior between the coolest brand and the experience of each
company follows the same pattern
The biggest difference is in communication, issue which is considered weak and/or false in most cases
The lower difference is the usefulness of the offer. In all cases it is recognized that there is still room for
improvement but with less effort
When the participants were split between those who are working in areas related to branding and
those who are not, the ones who are in related areas are more pessimistic with their own
experiences, except in regard to the synthesis of the value proposition shown by the brand
People fail to decode the message
The aspirational is difficult to achieve and produces frustration [is sensed a lack of authenticity and realism]
Internally, the brand experience is not lived properly
It should delve into what is understood as "partially" [there is a plan but humble, or there is no plan and only
punctual events]
People who are outside the areas of communication consider the relevance of their brands in other company
factors [out of communication]
asociados a ella
13. 11090112_Allegro 234_Coolest and Gaps

Coolest & Gaps
With the participation of more than 1000 people
during the months of October and November
2008, Allegro 234 conducted the "Coolest & Gaps
Branding Survey".
This survey is the first in which the question
about the coolest brand has been opened without
a predetermined lists [spontaneous, not induced].
Through various media and online blogs, the
survey has achieved a high participation level
• 1,314 participants
• Europe 55%, the Americas 40% and Asia
5% [39 countries]
• 70% of participants working in areas
related to branding, marketing,
communications and PR
Coolest
The five coolest brands are:
• Apple [with more than double of mentions
than the second one]
• Coca-Cola
• Disney
• Ferrari
• Virgin
Two groups of brands follows the top five,
including:
• Adidas, Alfa Romeo, Illy, Moët Chandon,
Nike
• Agent Provocateur, BMW, Jaguar, Nestle,
Norwegian Cruise, Patagonia, Red Bull,
Starbucks, Volvo, Vueling
Even as these are the coolest brands, participants
also recognize that there are things to improve:
• Associate services: The product meets
expectations, what it is around shows
deficiencies
• Warranty: The "small print"
• Price: Brand premium price
Finally, two important issues:
• Communication is only part of the
experience [Companies in the
telecommunications sector and financial
institutions have rarely been mentioned,
less than 1%]
• Coolest brand Experiences are those which
are lived with the five senses
Coolest & Gaps
listas predeterminadas [espontáneo, no inducido].
encuentran:
• Adidas, Alfa Romeo, Illy, Moët Chandon,
Nike
• Agent Provocateur, BMW, Jaguar, Nestlé,
Norwegian Cruise, Patagonia, Red Bull,
Starbucks, Volvo, Vueling
telecomunicaciones e instituciones
financieras han sido mencionadas en pocas
ocasiones; menos de un 1%]
• Las experiencias de marca más “cool” son
aquellas que se viven con los cinco
sentidos
15. 13090112_Allegro 234_Coolest and Gaps
Gaps
On average, it is recognized that all companies,
regardless of the sector they belong to, need to
work on their brand experience
Those working in areas related to branding are
more pessimistic than the non-related people,
except in regard to the synthesis of their value
proposition [what the brand says]
• People fail to decode the message
[marketing speaks a language that only
they understand]
• The aspirational is difficult to achieve and
produces frustration [is sensed a lack of
authenticity and realism]
Finally, in regard to the internal branding
experience, 60% of participants believed that it is
inappropriate and/or partially adequate in their
business
• Those working in related areas are more
critical [they base their internal experience
on communication]
• Those working in non-related areas live the
experience better because they are
considering other factors that go beyond
communication
Gaps
parcialmente adecuada
• Quienes trabajan en áreas relacionadas son
más críticos [basan la experiencia interna
en su comunicación]
• Quienes trabajan en áreas no relacionadas
viven mejor la experiencia a partir de
considerar otros factores que van más allá
de la comunicación
