Sectors
of the
Investment
Association
The Investment Association
works within numerous
different fund sectors, which
can be broadly classified
into those that seek capital
growth and those that aim
to generate income. The
Investment Association divides
approximately 3,000 funds
available in the UK into various
sectors to help investors (or
investment advisors) have
the information they require
to compare funds within
each sector, before looking at
individual funds in detail.

The Sectors
Committee
The Sectors Committee oversees
the sectors, which are run by staff
of the Investment Association.
Fund providers must submit to the
Sectors Committee their request
to be classified in a specific
sector, which is then reviewed. An
independent monitoring company
checks the funds monthly for
compliance with sector criteria.
Organisation
As well as division by capital
growth or income generation,
funds are also classified by
industry sector, asset type or
geographical region. Some
are in the specialist category
while others choose to remain
unclassified. Carefully monitored
funds may be classified in the
targeted absolute return sector,
which aims to produce a positive
outcome regardless of market
conditions.
