Tata cars – redefining travel comfort
1. Tata cars – redefining travel comfort
Tata Motors is an Indian multinational automobile manufacturer. Founded in 1945, Tata Motors
entered the passenger car market in 1991 with a car named Sierra. In 1998, they rolled out their
fully indigenous passenger car - Indica. The Tata Nano, launched in 2008 is the cheapest
passenger car in the world.
Tata has been producing different models of cars and has a good overseas market. Tata Nano has
eight variants including two CNG variants. Its base price is around Rupees 1.5 lakhs. This 4-
seater gives a mileage of 25 kmpl. Tata Indica, a hatchback launched in 1998, was successful.
Two new models are available now - the Indica eV2 (petrol and diesel), launched in 2011 and the
Indica V2 diesel. The eV2 diesel version, priced from Rupees 3.86 to 4.81 lakhs has a mileage of
25 kmpl and offers many comfort features on the higher versions. Indica Vista is another
hatchback launched in 2008, which is on sale even now.
Tata Indigo eCS and Tata Manza are the two sedans produced by Tata Motors and launched in
2009 and 2012 respectively. The Indigo, a sub 4-metre sedan is priced at Rupees 4.83 lakh and
the Manza at 5.85 lakh for the base versions. Manza is provided with many safety features like
airbags, ABS and EBD, power windows and comfort features like an automatic AC and a 2-DIN
music system.
Tata Safari is an SUV that was first launched in 1998. A second generation Safari was introduced
in 2012, which is priced between Rupees 8.8 and 10 lakhs. This seven-seater diesel SUV gives a
mileage of 13.9 kmpl. The Aria unveiled in the 2010 Expo has most of the safety features and
has a cruise control system introduced for the first time. A poor mileage of 11.8 kmpl is slightly
disadvantageous for this vehicle. The Tata Safari Strome, launched in December 2012, is priced
at Rupees 10.3 lakhs for the base version. Tata Xenon, re-launched in 2009, has a maximum
ground clearance of 200 mm.
2. In the MUV segment also, Tata Motors has its decent share. Tata Sumo, first launched in 1994,
had a face-lifted edition in 2002. The Sumo Grande launched in 2010 is doing average business.
The Venture, introduced in 2010 is a diesel MUV with an adjustable seating for five, six or eight
passengers. Even though the pricing is low (Rupees 4.74 lakh for the entry-level) this MUV
could not attract many customers. Tata Winger is a diesel minivan meant for seven persons.
TML is expecting to improve their position in the market once their new launches like the Zest,
Bolt, the diesel version of Nano and the Manza cS come out to the Indian roads, most probably
in 2014.
