BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS:
KEENNESS TO EARN HALAL
(LEGITIMATE) EARNINGS
2. Outline:
1. Halal (legitimate) and haram (prohibited) things
in Islam are obvious.
2. The concern of al-Quran and hadits on halal
earnings.
3. Examples of halal earnings.
4. The positive impact of halal earnings in economy
and social life.
3. Halal (legitimate) and Haram (prohibited) Things in Islam
are Obvious.
Holy Prophet Muhammad (saws) Anas Ibn Malik reports that Allah's Messenger (saws) said, “It is
obligatory on every Muslim to seek what is Halal.” (Majma Az-Zawaid, 10:291)
Abdullah Ibn Masud (ra) reports that Allah‟s Messenger once remarked: “It is Obligatory to seek to
earn Halal after other Obligatory observations i.e. Prayers etc.” (Sunan Al-Baihaqi, 6:126)
These two Traditions clearly point out that it is the responsibility of a true Muslim to seek the wealth,
which is Halal and make himself busy in benefiting from all lawful means at his disposal. So, when
a Muslim intends to adopt a profession, start out a business, or seek an employment, then he must
seriously think that if they are lawful for him
Abu Said reports that Allah‟s Messenger (saws) once said, “The person who earns Halal and then he
uses it for himself or gives it to someone or clothes someone, then this act will become a cause of
purity for him.” (Sahih Ibn Hibban, 10:48, Mustadrak, 4:144)
4. The Concern of Al-Quran and Hadits on Halal Earnings.
Islam places great emphasis on the code of lawful and unlawful in business transactions.
Many Qur’anic verses disapprove the wrongful taking of the property.
Says the Holy Qur’an:
“Do not devour one another‟s property wrongfully, nor throw it before the judges in order to
devour a portion of other‟s property sinfully and knowingly. (2:188)”
“Do not devour another‟s property wrongfully – unless it be by trade based on mutual
consent. (4:29)”
The above verses prohibit the believers in no uncertain terms to devour the property of
others by illegal means. The Prophet (sws) endorsed the importance of legitimate ways of
earning in the following words:
Asked „what form of gain is the best? [the Prophet] said, „A man‟s work with his hands, and
every legitimate sale‟. (Ahmad, No: 1576)
From the above it is clear that a Muslim trader must be determined to earn only through
legitimate means. He should not only avoid illegitimate means in earning his provisions
and livelihood but also distance himself from matters dubious and doubtful.
5. Examples of Halal Earnings
As an officer who has a lot of opportunities to do things that
deviate in getting the earnings that is not in accordance
with Islamic law, he should avoid it. We are only eligible to
receive it is appropriate that we get, outside it can says that
we get an illegitimate earnings.
If we face two opportunities to decide which one is the best
choice between a job with small salary but work in halal
way and a job with big salary but work in haram way, so we
supposed to choose the first choice because in this world we
aren‟t only find richness from money but we have to do
everything in the name of Allah.
6. The Positive Impact of Halal Earnings in Economy and Social
Life
a. God will granted our pray. In this case, Rasulullah SAW said:
That Sa‟ad ask to Rasulullah to beg to Allah to make his pray granted. Then Rasulullah
SAW said: “eat quality food, so Allah will granted your pray.” (HR. Imam Tabrani)
b. Allah will give us wisdoms.
Who eat halal food for forty days, Allah will illuminate his heart and He will give wisdoms
from his heart for his utterance. (HR. Abu Ayyub)
c. Looking for halal sustenance is 9/10 of the value of worship. Rasulullah SAW said:
Worship is 10 sections, nine of it is looking for halal sustenance.
d. Looking for halal sustenance will obtain God‟s mercy and blessings. Rasulullah said:
“Whoever at the afternoon with tired looking for halal goods or needs, so he will always
be with Him”
