2. Managing childs behaviour
ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has no cure. But to parents whose child is showing signs
of ADHD in children, don’t lose hope yet because this disorder can be controlled if managed well. After
careful and thorough diagnosis, your pediatrician will devise a long term plan to help your child manage
his or her behaviour.
As a parent, you have the biggest responsibility when it comes to your child’s treatment. You have to
change your home’s environment to adapt to your child’s special needs. If you have siblings, you also
have to talk to them and let them understand the situation. You and your partner will also undergo clinical
studies to further understand what ADHD is to be able to handle and take care of your child.
3. Adhd medications
Children who are diagnosed with this disorder will undergo medications and behavioural therapy.
Stimulants are the most common medication for ADHD. This kind of drug lessens the symptoms of ADHD
in children. Also known as psychostimulants, this drug improves and enhances the brain function of the
child and helps improve and manage the usually uncontrollable behaviour. It helps the child to focus on
the task at hand and become attentive to their teacher or parents.
Each child needs different types of stimulant and also different dosages, so consult your child’s
pediatrician first. The type of stimulant and dosage might change overtime depending on your child’s
progress, so it is also important to visit the doctor regularly for constant monitoring.
4. Using stimulants
Some of the improvements expected on children with ADHD using stimulants are:
• Lesser fidgeting and locomotion
• More attentive inside the classroom
• More focused on task at hand
• Can listen without interrupting
• Better recognition to parents’ and teacher’s authority
5. Helping control childs behaviour
Stimulants help in controlling your child’s behaviour but your child will also experience side effects such as
stomachache, insomnia and decreased appetite. But don’t worry because the side effects are only
temporary as your child’s body is adjusting to the drug. The drug has no known long-term side effects.
The parents should not depend on the medication and therapy alone. It should be combined with care and
love from you and the rest of the family. Your child will be more responsive to treatments, if he or she will
be able to feel the love that only parents and family could give.
