Teardrop Travel Trailers Pros and Cons
1. Teardrop Travel Trailers Pros and Cons
Doug Meston, owner of Endeavor Manufacturing
Ltd. in British Columbia, Canada, and
manufacturer of the Wee-Kender brand of travel trailers, describes the growing interest in ultralight
trailers as "a small trailer craze".
"I think it is mostly a matter of economics," he told Suite101 (March 11, 2009 2:24:24 PM MDT) . "If
you have a big trailer, you need a big truck with a big motor to pull it and with the price of fuel,
Motor Homes and fuel guzzling trucks are becoming less affordable."

One particular product in the small trailer market is the teardrop - a compact travel trailer
consisting of a sleeping cabin and a kitchen area - named because in side profile they resemble a
stylized teardrop, bulbous at the front and tapering at the back in a streamlined shape.
Advantages of Teardrop Trailers
Whatever the reasons, small "teardrop" trailers seem to be gaining popularity. Meston lists several
benefits of the teardrop style:
Low purchase cost compared to larger units
Modern units are comfortable, with many amenities
Ferries cost less (fee is based on trailer size and weight)
Can be stored in a garage
Can be towed with midsized or compact vehicles (some even by a motorcycle)
Very low fuel cost for towing
Easy to tow - drivers find they don't even notice the additional weight
Low hitch weight, easy to attach and remove, require only a Class 1 hitch.
2. Easy to park on a camp site - many can be moved into place by hand
More protection, security, safety than a tent
"The Teardrop Trailer is a concept from the 1940's and 50's that was brought back to popularity by
vintage car enthusiasts in the United States. People with old cars were finding and restoring original
Teardrops or buying original plans off the internet and building their own and I guess the interest
grew from that," says Meston.
"People with small vehicles found out they could pull these little trailers and thus an old industry
was reborn."
Who Buys Teardrop Travel Trailers?
"They aren't really a starter trailer if my customers are an indication," says Meston. He reports the
market as
Childless couples in their late forties and up
Couples whose children are grown and who are taking up camping again
People with 4 or 6 cylinder cars who want to camp off the ground (not in tents)
Those who live in condos or smaller properties and can store the teardrop on site
Younger couples tend towards adventure camping - backpack and tent style - while growing families
prefer tent-trailer (pop-up or hybrid) and travel trailer camping, according to the Recreation Vehicle
Industry Association (RVIA).
Disadvantages of Teardrop Trailers
Obviously, the tiny teardrop is not for everyone. Travelers who want a king-sized bed, a microwave,
and two TVs will avoid a minimalist trailer like the teardrop.
Relatively small size may make the trailer seem cramped
Going outside for cooking may not appeal in bad weather
No inside dinette or eating area
No toilet or shower (depending on model and level)
Amenities vary widely (some have stove/fridge/sink, others don't)
Teardrops are best suited to one or two people. Of course, the kids can bunk out in a tent - and some
teardrop makers even have an optional add-a-room.
RV repair
Perhaps one of the main attraction of teardrop travel trailers is that they're sort of cute. They attract
attention. They remind people of what camping used to be, and still can be - a very basic connection
3. between the camper and the outdoors.
