Old VW air-cooled cars are a lot of fun, but unless one has lots of money to spend, restoring vw parts or vw accessories can break the bank for most people. Here we are educating 3 simple steps to replace your VW Windshields and Seals.
2. Step 1:- Getting Started
Buy replacement glass from an auto glass shop
Most shops offer new glass, though sometimes it may not fit as well as
the original windshield, and it also tends to be more expensive. For a
better deal you may want to try junkyards.
Buy new rubber
The ‘Classic’ look (all black) is a good way to go. Most people think it
looks better. Also, you don't have to struggle with inserting the chrome
trim into the rubber.
Remove the old glass
Use a utility knife to slice off the outer edge of the seal, by running the
thin blade between the glass and the seal. Pull out the glass and throw
away the old seal. As you cut away the old seal make sure you don’t let
the window fall out.
3. Step 2:- Preparing the Frame
and the New Glass
Inspect your frame
If the frame is badly rusted, it is time to take a trip to the body shop to
get a new one cut in.
Make sure the surface, even if undamaged, is clean and smooth so the
new rubber will seal well.
Clean both sides of the glass
Put the seal on the window
Start at one corner, and begin sliding the glass into the inner groove of
the seal with a blunt screwdriver.
It would be helpful to have someone hold the seal on the glass while
you work.
Prepare the windshield to go back onto the vehicle
Get some nylon rope, long enough to go all the way around the window
with enough left over to hold on to.
Start at the bottom of the window, and begin inserting the rope into the
groove in the rubber. Run the rope all the way around the window. To
avoid a mess use some electrician’s tape.
4. Step 3:- Windshield Installation
Lube the window frame and align the glass
Line up the glass, then have someone press the glass firmly into place
from the outside. First set the bottom part of the seal into the frame, as
it is the hardest part to fit.
From the inside grasp the rope and begin pulling inward. As you pull the
rope inwards, the window should suck into place. Use a silicone spray
lube to soften and slip the seal into position.
Ensure that the person outside continues to apply firm pressure and
while you keep everything lined up on the inside, and pull the rope
towards yourself.
Have a thin putty knife, without sharp edges, at hand to help with any
difficult spots.
Inspect your work
Make sure the seal is in place all the way around. Use the putty knife to
fix any areas that might have folded under, by running it between the
frame and the rubber.
Clean the glass and seal
Clean the glass and seal, and perhaps treat it with rubber preservative,
so you won't have to do this again anytime soon.
5. Things to Remember:-
Have patience - lots and lots of patience
Remember, don't over torque the glass when you are putting the seal in
place, or you may end up buying more glass.
Always consult your car mechanic
Consult your car mechanic while fitting the windshield yourself, it will
not cost you a penny. Don’t hesitate to call your car mechanic.
