Global West Coast Swing “Flash Mob” Hits Vancouver
Canadian Champions Myles Munroe and Tessa Cunningham lead local West Coast
Swing dancers to join the global Flash Mob phenomenon to promote this modern partner
dance and put Vancouver on the map while giving mall shoppers a free cultural arts
performance.
West Coast Swing is the most modern evolution of Swing dancing, mostly danced to
Top40 pop music, R&B, and Blues. It is a fusion of vintage Swing, Hustle, and Hip Hop,
and attracts dancers from all generations.
“It’s ideal for nightclubs and music videos”, says Tessa Cunningham, Canadian West
Coast Swing Champion. “When people think of partner dancing, they think Ballroom,
and when they think Swing, they think Big-Band. But West Coast Swing is neither. It’s
the euphoric social fun of partner dancing, but done to current, urban music that is
relevant to this generation.” She and fellow Champion partner Myles Munroe are leading
the Canadian expansion of this particular Flash Mob, teaching the choreography in their
Vancouver group classes.
A Flash Mob is a pre-choreographed dance or movement that is performed as a large
group in a predetermined public space. The 4-minute (one song) routine begins with a
single dancer and appears to spread among the crowd, creating a giant, spontaneous
public spectacle of unified musical expression, then suddenly dispersing as if nothing
happened. This particular Flash Mob is made up of West Coast Swing dancers from BC,
Washington, and Alberta, who are in town for Vancouver’s annual West Coast Swing
convention, part of an international circuit of conventions across 4 continents. This
particular routine was created in Houston by West Coast Swing pros Damon & Lisa
D’Amico, who are thrilled that in a few short weeks the routine went viral. Since the
summer, West Coast Swing dancers in 10 countries and over 50 cities are now
performing it in train stations, malls and university campuses.
“It’s even going to Hollywood with us,” says Munroe, referring to the Flash Mob being
planned on location at Universal Studios, Hollywood immediately following the US
Open Swing Dance Championships being held in Burbank, CA at the end of November.
He and Cunningham are preparing to represent Canada for their 9th year at this annual
West Coast Swing equivalent to the World Cup. “West Coast Swing is a social dance that
2. unifies people because it ignores languages, accents, religions, age, economics and status.
The Flash Mob is a beautiful demonstration of that diversity, which brings our dance
community together to create an awe-inspiring, free cultural arts spectacle for the public.”
