125mph, stretched over 400 miles across. According to saffir-simpson Hurricane scale, it lied in category
3. This hurricane was rated to be the most deadly and devastated hurricane of last 100 years of United
States. The major cities, getting affected the most are New Orleans, LA, Mobile, AL and Gulfport.

According to FEMA, Katrina is, “the single most catastrophic natural disaster in U.S. history." Hurricane
Katina costs around 125 billion$ with over 44 billion$ in insured cost. More than 300,000 homes were
destroyed approximately in this deadly hurricane. Moreover, around 1.7 million different claims were
made for damage of vehicles, homes and businesses.
Total Fatalities by cities are; Alabama=2, Florida=14, Georgia=3, Louisiana=1579 and Mississippi=238
summing up to 1,836. More than one million people residing in the Golf coast were replaced to different
designations. Government has spent more than 120.5 billion$ for the relief of the victims out of which
major chunk went to the emergency relief fund. Louisiana had completely drowned into the hurricane
resulting 40 % of deaths because of drowning alone. Other than that 25% people died because of injury
while remaining with heart conditions.
Hurricane Katina severely damaged the economy of United States. The oil prices rise to $3 per barrel
where as gas prices reached almost $5 a gallon. This increase in price was triggered because 19% of
United States oil production was affected. Moreover, the sugar industry in Louisiana’s worth 500$
3. million and 50 chemicals plants fulfilling the demand of 25% of nation’s chemical demand was
distressed.
The story does not end here, and the main damage was made to the City of New Orleans. Port
experienced loss of 260$ million, though it was restored a week later. Tourism industry used to
contribute 9.6$ billion annually pre Katrina, but the number dropped down tremendously. Tourist’s
summing up to 7.1 million before hurricane declined to 2.6 million in 2006.
Conclusion
Even today, even after so many years, the victims of hurricane are still trying to bring their lives to
normal. The psychological effects are more than the physical, not letting people come out of the
trauma.
