6. Windows Media vs iTunes
• Select your default preference when you install the Download
Manager
– Preference can be changed “on the fly” when downloading an
audiobook
• iTunes: Audiobooks copied directly to attached device
– Device must be attached in order to download
• Windows Media: Audiobooks copied to computer, and then
synced to device, if desired
– May listen to file on computer, or on portable device
• Different files served, depending on which you choose
– Files are not interchangeable, iTunes files may not be copied to
WMA device, WMA files may not be copied to iTunes device
Key point: iTunes and WMA is an either/or thing, but the preference can be changed on the fly when downloading.
Note that downloading is best done at home, from the paton’s own computer. If you do allow downloading within the library, be sure to explain that process too.
Key point: WMA files will not work on iTunes devices and vice versa. Different files are served, depending on your download preferences.
Results set. Click “download” to checkout/download book
Note that we are assuming that we, at this point have neither logged in to My EBSCOhost nor installed the Download Manager. Emphasize that these steps are not required for each and every checkout.
If not signed in to My EBSCOhost, you will be prompted to do so
If you haven’t installed download manager, you will be prompted to do so.
Note also on this slide that the patron may be allowed to choose his/her own checkout period, not to exceed that set by the library.
Click run to install Download Manager
Follow the steps…I didn’t include every dialog here…its fairly self-explainatory.
Note that it is a fairly quick and painless process
Important to choose which method you are going to use…if you don’t have an Apple device, use Windows Media.
This is your default preference…it can be changed on-the-fly while downloading.
Download Manager installed (we skipped the progress bar…we all know what progress bars look like, right?)
Downloading via iTunes…note that you will save directly to device, and that the device must be plugged in for the download to occur.
Note two progress bars…one as it downloads from EBSCOhost, one as it copies to the device. The file will not remain on the computer. This is just a function of the DRM used by Apple devices. If you want to listen to a file on your computer, use WMA download.
Yea! We can now listen to our Audiobook. Audiobook will remain active on our Apple device until the end of the checkout period, when it will cease to function. (DRM). The file will still be there though, so you might want to delete it to save space.
Switching gears….Downloading Via Windows Media, everything up to this point looks the same as downloading via iTunes. Note that the file will be downloaded to computer and must be synced to portable device (if desired).
When the download is complete, Windows Media will launch and the Audiobook will begin to play on your computer.
Click “Sync” to copy to portable device. Your new book will be found in the “Recently Added” folder. Plug in device (note right hand part of screen), drag and drop book onto sync list and sync will begin automatically.
