A lightning strike during a dry period started a forest fire in Luce County that burned 20,000 acres. Hundreds of firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire, some staying overnight at the fire site. Local residents had to evacuate their homes, with their animals being housed at the local pound and people staying at the school or American Legion. Volunteers made meals for the firefighters and residents showed their appreciation with a parade when the fire was finally contained.
