3. It’s not what you say, it’s what you do
• Words can be cheap
• Promises can be broken
• Jesus was making a point about the leaders “they
do not practice what they preach” (Matthew
23:3)
• There is often a gap between words and actions
• There is a gap between religious practice and the
Father’s will
• A real change of heart will result in different
actions
4. It’s not where you start it’s where you
end up
• The two sons have contrasting responses to the
request
• The sons have different starts and different outcomes
• The first son could have thought ‘the die has been
cast’
• Jesus is saying that change is possible
• The people who gathered around Jesus had said ‘no’
to the Father
• You may be far from God
• Jesus came seeking the lost
5. It’s not what you know, it’s whether
you repent
• The Jewish leaders were experts in the Law
• They heard the teaching of John
• They saw ‘sinners’ repent
• Jesus held them accountable because they still
did not repent and believe
• Not all theologians are saved
6. Though the time is short, it’s not too
late
• This was the last week
• This was the last day of public teaching
• There was still an opportunity to repent
• Some were ‘not far from the kingdom of God’
(Mark 12:34)
• God graciously calls a second time
• “Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a
second time” (Jonah 3:1)
