'Boot Camp for the Brain' Improves Functionality Following Concussion
As evidence of long-term concussion damage grows, clinical neuroscience is an emerging treatment option.
() ! " (/rss)
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Culturally and particularly in the rough-and-tumble world of
American sports, concussions have been treated somewhat casually, as "a bump on the head" or "part of the
game." But growing research and evidence show that a concussion is very serious indeed. The retirement
announcement of a popular WWE wrestling star – due to multiple concussions – drives home that point. Now,
an emerging field of medicine gives hope to concussion patients by rebuilding or creating new neural
connections in injured brains.
The Center for Disease Control estimates 3.8 million individuals report a concussion each year, but many
concussions go unreported, especially among men.
"A concussion is an impact to the head that interrupts normal function of the brain," said Dr. Matthew
Antonucci, Director of Neurological Performance and Rehabilitation at Plasticity Brain Centers. "Concussions
can affect functions that patients are unaware of, such as balance, physical coordination, eye tracking,
cognitive function, memory and even emotional state. While 90 percent of concussions resolve on their own,
10 percent do not."
Antonucci and his colleagues are using cutting-edge science to help people with traumatic brain injury,
especially those who do not respond to traditional treatment. Patients spend five days at the center, up to six
hours a day; it's like "boot camp for the brain." Personalized diagnosis and treatment can focus on eye
movement, balance, inner ear function, brainwaves, motor function, timing, vision therapy, or hand-eye
coordination. The benefit of clinical neuroscience is in the frequency, intensity and duration of treatment.
Plasticity Brain Centers treats many conditions of the brain, including neurodegenerative diseases and
movement disorders. A retrospective analysis of 100 patients who were unresponsive to other therapies found
that 93 percent of patients improved, and they improved by an average of 48 percent.
Plasticity Brain Centers offers non-invasive neuro-rehabilitation based on a single scientific principle: the
brain is capable of learning and changing throughout a patient's life. This is made possible through
engagement with targeted neuro-receptors; known as "neuroplasticity," this approach is widely accepted by
the scientific community and only available in leading-edge treatment centers. The Centers' board-certified
doctors and specialists provide an innovative and comprehensive diagnostic and treatment model delivering
exceptional outcomes to exceptional patients, unleashing the brain's potential now.
