If you find a young man in Mussoorie intent on killing scorpions, he might
have reasons to do it that you have not heard of.The stings of the scorpion
are plucked out and dried, then mixed in with charas (a form of cannabis) or
ganja (hasish) to make a more potent drug.`Bicchu dunk' (the powdered
scorpion sting) is available in small packets that cost up to Rs 2,000. One
young man who said he used to smoke the substance until two years back
said the price is variable, depending on the size of the scorpion and the
thickness of the customer's wallet.“Scorpions are easy to find in the
monsoon. Lift any stone and you're sure to find one underneath, on the
mountains,“ the youth explained.
Another young man explained that the sting is plucked out, and the two
pincers too can be removed with a sharp blade. These are dried for about
four days and ground to powder. “The high from it lasts about three days,“
he said.

Bhang (marijuana) grows easily in the hills, and is a popular drug. The
scorpion-sting powder is reportedly catching on fast. For long, it was
associated mostly with unemployed youth, but locals and even foreign
tourists are now beginning to turn to it.
While there are some young people who catch scorpions to powder their
stings for their own use, there are also people who will venture far to be able
to catch a number of scorpions and sell their powdered stings. The scorpions
are found in villages near Mussoorie too, like Khatta paani, Chamansari,
Kyarkuli, Bhatta and Kolti.
Scorpions are not the only creatures sought after by people seeking a `high'.
A local red-headed lizard is also dried and used in a similar manner, one
young man said.

Few people using the drug, though, are aware of the long term harm it
causes there are cases of people having hallucinations long afterwards.
Also, the drug is known to be extremely addictive.
Mussoorie, however, is not unique in seeking out the scorpion. In his
2007 book `Drugs in Afghanistan: Opium, Outlaws and Scorpion Tales',
David Macdonald writes of the Tartars in Bamiyan province who smash
scorpions between stones and then allow them to dry . The sting is
then crushed to powder and smoked with tobacco andor hashish
(marijuana).

Macdonald recounts the experience of a friend, who witnessed a man
high on the drug in Peshawar: “The effect was instantaneous with the
man's face and eyes becoming very red, much more than a hashish
smoker ... He also seemed very intoxicated but awake and alert,
although he stumbled and fell over when he tried to rise from a sitting
position.“ The friend also explains that the effect of the drug appeared
to last much longer than other drugs.
Asked of the spread of the scorpion-sting drug, sub-inspector RS
Kholiya of Mussoorie said, “I have never heard of this intoxicant. If
indeed it is catching up, we will find out about it.“
