The Sunanda Pushkar postmortem controversy was revived on Tuesday as All
India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) sought the Delhi high court's nod
to replace Dr Sudhir Kumar Gupta as head of its forensic department,
prompting allegations from him that he was pressured to give a false report
on the death of Shashi Tharoor's wife at the behest of the AIIMS director.
Days before the AIIMS move, on May 28, Gupta had shot off a letter to Union
health minister J P Nadda, saying, “I was asked by (AIIMS director) Dr Misra
to give a postmortem report of late Sunanda Pushkar as natural death which
was contrary to the findings.“ In the letter, a copy of which is with TOI, he
also alleged a “tacit understanding“ between AIIMS director Dr M C Misra
and former Union minister Tharoor to fabricate a “tailor-made“ postmortem
report.
Sunanda was found dead in her room at a five-star hotel in Delhi on January
17 last year.

“I was asked by Dr Misra to give a postmortem report of late Sunanda Pushkar as
natural death which was contrary to the findings,“ he said in the latter, a copy of
which is with TOI. Gupta said he did not buckle and gave the factual report as an
“upright official“.
The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has rejected Gupta's claims and the
charge of interference against Tharoor.
AIIMS rejected the allegations. “The institute would like to categorically state that
there was no extraneous pressure ever on Dr Gupta with regard to his medical
opinion for any case. Allegations being levelled against the institute in the media by
Prof Gupta in this regard are baseless and denied,“ an AIIMS statement said.
Sources, however, said Dr Adarsh Kumar, who was also a member of the board of
doctors which conducted the postmortem (of Sunanda Pushkar), has also written to
the health minister supporting Dr Sudhir Gupta. He reportedly claimed that the
board was asked to state the manner of death as “natu ral“. Pushkar was found

In its application in the high court on Tuesday , the AIIMS administration sought to appoint
Dr D N Bhardwaj as the new head of its forensic medicine and toxicology department in
place of Dr Sudhir Gupta. In its order on March 25, the high court had directed AIIMS to
take its permission before replacing Gupta.
The rider was in view of Gupta's plea challenging a Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT)
order rejecting his charge that Dr O P Murty was promoted after purging his seniority with
the purpose of obtaining a “tailormade report“ in the Sunanda Pushkar case.
CAT rubbished Gupta's claim and rejected the charge of interference levelled against
Tharoor. It said the “email sent by Shashi Tharoor, then Union Minister, to Dr Rajiv Bhasin,
on January 26, 2014, and the notice dated June 2, 2014 issued by Dr Adarsh Kumar,
member secretary , Medical Board, AIIMS do not reveal anything to show that any pressure
was put on the applicant to submit a tailor-made autopsy report in Sunanda Pushkar's
case“.
The government has denied the allegations before CAT on August 27 last year, stating that
Murty was promoted only after a go-ahead from the department of personnel and
training.
