Modern Challenges Presented by Federalism.
Recently, federalism has been challenged by the economic downturn of 2008-2009 and the
response to Hurricane Katrina. In each of these cases, local and state governments called on
federal government for aid and in both situations the federal government was blamed for local
problems. Explain how modern federalism works effectively in a complex, networked world.
What changes would you make to improve the relationship between different levels of
government? Do you believe we need multiple levels of government in the modern world? How
does technology enhance or complicate the relationships between these different levels of
government?
