It’s great to be
talking to you again
after my recent
operation. Thanks to all
the folk who have
asked how I am doing,
much appreciated. I’m
well into my physio programme now and
managing to get around a little which is
great.
It seems that the NHS is constantly in
the media with negativity the main thrust
of the coverage but in my recent
experience I cannot fault the dedicated
staff who are on the frontline of care and
service. I received top notch nursing at
Cannock Chase Hospital and the after care
has been second to none.
Perhaps the media should concentrate
on the positive parts of the NHS which in
my opinion is the best in the world!
Negativity seems to be the generating
factor in our TV news coverage too. Every
single story seems to be about disasters or
ghastly criminal acts. There are lots of
excellent feelgood stories out there surely
so come on let’s get an equal and fair view
of what’s happening in our country and
around the world.
Mind you, watching the TV news
coverage of the European Union’s pathetic
handling of the current migration tragedy
is astounding! It reflects how toothless the
EU really is and how the countries which
make up the pact just can’t function
together.
It looks to me as though it is the
wealthy countries within the EU who
make the decisions and inflict their
mandates onto the poorer neighbours!
What kind of ‘Union’ is that?
I believe what is happening within the
EU now will have disastrous consequences
for the world in the future and will go
down in history as a massive error in not
acting more decisively and humanely right
at the beginning of this very sad tragedy.
It looks to me as though the EU and its
leaders have now got so many problems
which they can’t address that the very
future of the organisation is at risk. They
also have the problems in Ukraine and
around that region of course, added to
what is happening within their own
countries at the moment!
Back to home, it can’t be too many days
to Christmas can it? No doubt the shop
windows will be dressed in their usual
festive slant in this month of October.
Don’t forget to shop locally to support
our community businesses!
I hope you enjoy reading The Voice
colour magazine.
I’ll speak to you next time...

Lank’s Lore
By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin
Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
I
have always been interested in the old canal
systems in England especially the ones around
our area.
Up to the late 1800’s the canals were used to
carry goods all over the country which nowadays of
course is done by road with the advent of new
motorway systems springing up country wide and
the introduction of the Juggernauts, making the
movement of goods a lot quicker to cope with
today’s hectic demands and speedier way of life.
Uttoxeter was no exception to the era of canal
transport with a basin situated off the Cheadle Road
with a huge wharf and warehouse which acted as
the hub for the proceedings.
When you think about it people must have had a
lot of patience in those days when goods they had
ordered were to be delivered by barge, saying that a
barge travels at approximately 4 miles per hour, it
must have taken weeks on end for their consignment
to reach them. Nowadays people go berserk if the
goods they have ordered do not arrive by next day
delivery!
When the canals started to become un-
economical in the late 1800’s the wharf building
closed down and it became a factory for Richard
Cooper & Sons manufacturing ladies corsets and the
like and up to a few years ago employed quite a lot
of local labour.
Unfortunately this came to an end and after
having various uses ended up being demolished to
make way for another housing project. Great shame
it was a real landmark in the town in it’s time, but
that is progress for you!
In the early 90’s I was approached by a local
company to produce some advertising and
commercial print work for them. They owned and
hired out narrow boats for pleasure cruising on the
local canals.
After completing their requests they made me a
generous offer I could barely refuse on hiring one of
their barges for the weekend to give it a try.
As much as the interest that I had in canals I
never thought about the idea of an holiday on the
inland waterway systems before and liking my
comfort on my few days off I can grab a year, I took
a lot of persuading but finally succumbed mainly
with the conversation leading to the amount of
proper pubs (which are my weakness) available to
me on such an endeavour.
I could not convince my wife that it would be
something different than we were used to, to have a
go and since I had committed myself to the hire of
the vessel, I rounded up some colleagues of mine and
we decided to make it a man’s weekend break of it.
My mates and I
travelled by car up
to Longport on the
Friday morning
where the boat
was moored up
and after pick-up
we set off on the
Trent & Mersey
Canal branching
off onto the
Cauldon Canal
mooring up for the
night and visiting
the Black Lion pub
at Consall Forge
for liquid
sustenance.
The next day,
the Saturday we progressed on, picking up the Leek
branch of the Cauldon Canal and travelled on
through Cheddleton up to our destination at Leek
again where we moored up for the evening taking in
the delights of this marvellous Staffordshire market
town.
The final day the Sunday, we headed back to our
base at Longport to return the boat taking in the
sites of Cheddleton Flint Mill, the Staircase Locks at
Eturia and seeing places that I have never seen before
from a totally different viewpoint
My colleagues and I had now got the bug and
with the knowledge of a friend of ours we hired
boats from other operators in different locations and
continued for a number of years exploring the
absolute delights of the British Canal System.
We saw during these days some marvellous feats
of engineering along with some old buildings that
have been carefully restored, met some very friendly,
interesting people and of course visited some pubs
which take some finding by road.
One of our favourite trips was on the Llangollen
canal in Wales. We picked up
the canal at Ellesmere in
Shropshire and travelled up to
our destination the
Pontcysylite Aqueduct at
Trevor Nr Wrexham.
This to me is an absolutely
fantastic run. Even for anyone
that does not hold any interest
in canals you cannot fail to be
impressed by the scenery, the
ingenious locks that you pass
through, the tunnel at Chirk
and of course the Pontcysylite
Aqueduct itself.
Built by Thomas Telford &
William Jessop in 1805 it
consists of a cast iron trough,
11ft wide, 1007 ft long and
5.25ft deep, supported by 18 hollow masonry piers
each span being 53ft wideand is 126ft high. It is the
highest and longest aqueduct in Britain and is a
Grade 1 listed building.
Please forgive me if I have been rambling on but
structures of this nature make you proud to be
English and it makes up for some of the so called
modern architecture that we have to suffer today,
Till next time, LANK.
Another feat of marvellous engineering, The
Anderton Boat Lift in Cheshire connecting the
River Weaver to the Trent & Mersey Canal

Outstanding
results
Painsley Catholic College is, once again, celebrating a set of truly
outstanding GCSE results with 80% of the Year 11 students at the
non-selective academy achieving 5 A*-C grades including English
and maths. Furthermore, a record-breaking number of Painsley
students have exceeded the level of progress expected of children
at secondary level. The results place Painsley as one of the highest
achieving schools in the whole of the country. Mr Stephen Bell,
Principal at the College, said, “I am delighted to report these
wonderful results. We have a determination that all of the children
fulfil their individual potential and are proud of the responsible
attitude that they adopt towards their studies. The results secure
the College’s reputation as a centre of excellence where children
are happy and successful in a caring, studious and disciplined
environment. To achieve these results in evermore rigorous GCSE
examinations is testimony to the efforts of the students, staff and
directors.”
Mr Bell takes the trust that parents put in him and the College
to care, guide and educate their child very seriously and everybody
at Painsley works tirelessly to ensure that every child’s ambitions
are realised. Staff and directors aim to ensure that Painsley
provides top quality state-funded education which is too often
equated to fee-paying schools or selective schools. It may be
tempting, therefore, to imagine that it will be difficult for parents
to obtain a place for their child at Painsley – particularly those who
are non-Catholics. However, there are more places on offer for
September 2016 and parents are encouraged to apply for a place to
secure a fantastic education for their child which will set them up
for the rest of their lives.
The closing date for parents to make their Secondary School
application on-line via the Staffordshire County Council website is
31st October 2015 at the following address:
www.staffordshire.gov.uk/education/schoolsandcolleges/admissions/admissions.aspx
£57,587.56!!
This is the total raised so far for Mary’s Meals during Painsley’s 50th year! The
College would like to congratulate every single member of the Painsley family on
this magnificent, world-record amount for the charity to receive from a school.
This staggering amount will enable Painsley to feed 4,720 children for a whole
year - a magnificent way to mark Painsley’s 50th year!
The cheque will be presented to Mary’s Meals over the coming weeks. Thank
you to every member of the Painsley family!!!!

Just the
perfect day...
M
ark proposed to me at the TT races
in the Isle of Man last year, it was a
complete surprise! Mark went to
Stone for his stag night, his friends and work
colleagues all turned up for an excellent night
out. I went to Liverpool with 50 friends
where we had a fantastic weekend finishing
with a night at the Cavern Club for the
Beatles tribute night. We had the most
fantastic wedding day.
My daughters and I went to Shades
hairdressers in the morning to have hair and
nails done then off to Ipstones to my mums
house to get ready. I had a lovely ride to
church in a Range Rover Vogue with family
friends Geoff and Linda. the 2 flower girls,
my nieces, Brea and Lexi Richards, who are
only aged 2, drove themselves to church in an
electric car!
It was such a happy day with my
daughters Maisie and Scarlet and my niece
Ezra Colclough as my bridesmaids. My mum
was to walk me down the aisle as I had sadly
lost my dad 3 years ago. As the church doors
opened and I saw all our family and friends
there, it was brilliant, I didn’t expect the
church to be quite so full! The vicar, Michael
Evans, gave a wonderful service which
everyone enjoyed. Mark and I didn’t feel
nervous at all on the day, which we were very
surprised. We had decided to hold the
wedding reception at the Winking Man as
that is where we had our first date. We had
more photos taken in the beautiful evening
light with the Roaches in the background,
then had a hog roast and a beautiful wedding
cake made by Mandy’s Cakes of Tean, and
partied until the early hours. We then went to
the Old Hall hotel, in Buxton for 2 nights
then on to a family holiday in Cornwall.
I would like to say a special thank you to
my sister Diane Richards who made my
beautiful broach bouquet and all the
bridesmaid dresses , room and church
decorations. Also to Mandy’s Cakes and Pete
and Julie at the Winking Man for making
such a special day and a big thank you to
Denise, Steve and Alana Wheat for all your
time, support and beautiful photography.

n Sunday August 9th 2015 a piece of
Cheadle’s Great War history was recreated
in the market square, namely the
requisition of local horses by the military, which
took place in August 1914. The event, called
Cheadle Remembers the War Horses, was
organised by the Cheadle Discovery Group as part
of Cheadle’s ongoing commemorations of the
Great War and was partly funded by the Heritage
Lottery Fund.
The main attraction of the event was the
gathering of local horses on the Market Square,
they were all led away by uniformed riders
representing the military officials of 1914. Music
at the event was provided by the Uttoxeter Brass
Band (Development Section) and the award
winning play ‘Letters from the Front’ was
performed by the Youth Section of CATS. The
event ended with the unveiling of a plaque and
interpretation board, a permanent reminder of the
events of August 1914.
Later in the year as part of the project a
sculpture will be unveiled on the main car park,
this will be in honour of the animals that lost their
lives in the Great War. On Saturday November 7th
at the Guild Hall, there will be a large exhibition
and a Great War booklet will be launched.
More details can be found on the Cheadle
Discovery and Visitor Centre website

the school on interview
skills, how to present
yourself, what questions to
ask in interview and how to
prepare your CV to make
you stand out from the
crowd.
Chanda was provided
with many networking
opportunities at the
Academy and was able to
use the both the practical
and professional skills
obtained along with
valuable experience
gathered working with
industry professionals.
With support on the
application and assessment
centre from the careers
department Chanda was
one of thousands of
applicants who secured one
of the most prestigious
Higher Apprenticeships
with the National Grid after
going through a rigorous
recruitment process and
assessment centre.
The Higher
Apprenticeship allows the
student to earn while they
learn, Chanda has a very
generous salary, a car and
will gain a degree with the
guarantee of employment
and a career without debt.
Chanda said “ I can’t
believe I’ve landed such a
lucrative package – a great
salary, a car and a national
company funding my degree
– I know I wouldn’t have
achieved this without
coming to the JCB
Academy”. “My friends
could not believe what I
received at The JCB
Academy and the
opportunities it has given
me”.

Are you a ‘big’ dog lover?
I
f you are an experienced ‘bigger’ dog
owner looking for a new dog to come and
live with you then Cheadle & District
Animal Welfare Society would love to hear
from you. The Society is caring for two
smashing huskies, one called Harry and one
Teddy. There is also Zeus who is a lovely
English Bull Terrier X and May a really nice
Doberman X. Harry and Zeus have been
going out regularly on walks together and are
brilliant, walkers are queuing up for them!
May was quite frightened when she arrived
but has gained such confidence since being at
the kennels and really deserves a lovely new
home. Teddy is a big lad with a very nice
nature. They all need to find their forever
homes with people who have the right
environment and circumstances for them.
They cannot spend their lives being passed
around as seems possibly to have been the
case with some of them. They need owners
who understand the needs of a bigger dog
and who can commit fully to them. Harry for
example needs an ultra secure home as he is
a ‘houdini’ whereas Teddy can be quite loud
when left!
Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society
Looking for homes- for 2 pairs of
collies!
C
headle & District Animal Welfare
Society is currently caring for two
pairs of collies- Bill & Ben and Cally
& Carly. It’s a big ask but it would be such a
shame to separate them from their pairs as
they do rely on one another totally and get
quite upset when parted if only for a short
period. Bill & Ben are brothers, aged 3 years.
Cally and Carly look to be sisters aged
around 12 months old. Can anyone provide
the right loving home they so deserve. They
are not ‘working dogs’ but need a nice home
environment with someone who can give
them the training and full attention they have
lacked to date. They are only young and have
gained such confidence since being at the
kennels and have come on in leaps and
bounds with regard to lead training and
walking out. They love to play and would no
doubt be great at agility type activities. They
are such quick learners with lovely
temperaments.

A
multi-talented young
circus performer
wowed the crowd at
this year’s Lark in the Park - the
free family fun day in Bramshall
Road Park, Uttoxeter.
Sam Goodburn is the British freestyle
unicycle champion and young juggler of the
year. At just 21 years old he stunned and
surprised spectators with a series of stunts that
defied the audience’s expectations.
Some of the crowd might have seen a juggler.
Others might have seen a unicyclist. And some
might have seen someone balancing on a
tightrope. But never all three at the
same time.
But that’s exactly what Sam did. He’s
believed to be the only person who does,
and to make the feat even more
remarkable the unicycle had a fully-inflated tyre,
rather than locking the rim of the wheel onto the
high wire.
Punch and Judy man Professor
Bauble and DJ Matt Goodwin – with a series of party games
including a snow machine – also entertained youngsters at the
event.
Dave Eadie, the President of Uttoxeter Lions Club, who run
the event, with support from East Staffs Borough Council, said: ‘I
think the entertainment in the arena was among the most popular
we’ve ever had at ten years of Lark in the Park.
‘It’s supposed to be an event for families at the end of the
school summer holidays and the way the kids responded it
obviously reached the target audience.’
Sam Goodburn, who is from Poole on the south coast, said the
show had been really enjoyable, despite the uneven arena surface,
which is a feature of the field due to the historic farming on the
site. He was booked after appearing briefly at last year’s
Christmas Cracker night when his act was limited by the cold
weather and heavy rain.
The arena entertainment also included the Uttoxeter Town
Band, who played two flawless sets of modern and traditional
tunes. Among the free children’s rides were bungee trampolines,
roundabouts, donkey rides, a rodeo bull, jousting and a ferris
wheel.
Another new attraction was a short course archery
range run by Uttoxeter Archery Club. Youngsters had
a chance to try the Olympic sport, with real bows
and arrows, in a controlled and safe setting.

1935.
The Club was founded in March that year when Rotarian S H Elkes, then a member of the
Stafford Club, was joined by Sam Elkes and M Longson at a meeting in Elkes Café and they
agreed to form the Club. The Inaugural Meeting was held on 19th March and 22 members
signed the Founders Roll. The Founder President was Tom Orme of another well-known

C
ommunity Fundraiser for Marie Curie Jessica Herrington launched a plea to the people
of Uttoxeter and Cheadle to help raise hundreds of pounds this November and
December. The charity needs more volunteers to help man its cash collections at
supermarkets throughout the area, to make sure every hour of every collection is covered.
Marie Curie organise supermarket collections around the festive season, raising funds to
provide one-to-one nursing care for terminally ill people in their own home.
Jessica Herrington, Community Fundraiser said: “We have a amazing volunteers in
Uttoxeter and Cheadle, and a fantastic fundraising group, who give their time to collect each
year, but we always need more volunteers to make sure we don’t miss out on valuable
collecting time and therefore valuable donations from festive shoppers. We’re really lucky in
that the local supermarkets and shopping centres have been so generous in offering us dates
to collect – we just want to make sure we make the most of this opportunity to raise much
needed funds for cancer care.”
She added: “By giving us just two hours of your time this Christmas to help collect in a
supermarket, you’ll be helping us raise much needed funds. Christmas is a time for families and
our nurses will again be working over the festive period to provide vital care and treatment
to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses, enabling them to be at home, surrounded
by their families and the things they hold most dear. Please get in touch today if you would
like to give up a few hours to help fund local cancer care.

O
ur first river cruise since one on
the Nile several years ago. We
were delighted to find
ourselves on board Riviera Travel’s
(150 pax) brand new “Charles
Dickens”. We loved the garland
attached to the boat to celebrate it’s
maiden voyage!
The “hotel” crew had been in
training and all was ready for us.
Minor teething problems (as you
would expect on a new boat) milk
jugs on tables too small (so we just
used teapots).
We travelled by train (others flew
but suffered delays) to Brussels for
boarding at Cologne after a three
hour coach transfer. Others flew but
also suffered delays getting to the boat as the
transferring coach had to meet later flights. So
we did not board until 6.00 pm and there was no
time to gather ourselves and visit either city or
cathedral which closed at 7.00 pm.
We chose to cruise upstream (the Swiss end
being more interesting). Cruising against the
river flow made sunbathing and reading more
comfortable with less wind over the top deck.
Our first port of call was Koblenz where we
were free to roam, enjoy the cable car across the
river and a holiday ice cream or two, all in bright
sun. Next day we cruised round the Boppard “S”
bend, through the steep sided Rhine Gorge and
past castles to the statue of the sailors’
temptress Loreley On reaching Rudesheim
with its fascinating mechanical music museum
we enjoyed plentiful offerings of wine and
‘Asbach’ liqueur coffee.
The river now widens and we were struck
by the enormous commercial use to which it is
put - with many more barges than tourist
boats. A railway on each side of the river
carried much freight – both better than on the
roads as in U.K.
We passed through several impressive locks
with only a few inches to spare on each side of
the boat. The next port of call was Strasbourg
in France (passports were never required) with
its superb cathedral within walking distance
(and more designer ice-creams).
Having arrived at Basel we were taken first to
Lake Titisee in the Black Forest where the
eponymous gateaux were delicious. The last day
proved to be the highlight of the cruise with the
all-day excursion ashore. Our coach visited
Lucerne with its Chapel bridge and old
picturesque buildings followed by quite a long
drive to Interlaken where we boarded a rack and
pinion railway up the mountain. At the top there
was a pleasant cafe and large alpine
garden with views across to the snow
covered Jungfrau and other alpine peaks –
outstandingly beautiful.
Food served onboard was entirely
appropriate buffet lunches and served
dinners. On one evening we were able to
join “fine dining” in smaller surroundings.
John was delighted to be able to visit the
wheelhouse and engine room, such was
the informal and welcoming atmosphere on
board.
All in all, an excellent cruise with just
the right combination of morning
relaxation on board and afternoon shore
excursions - all included (nothing extra to
pay!)
The TGV serves Basel so we were hoping
for an easy journey back but we had not
realised the difficulty of dragging our luggage on
a hot day over uneven surfaces at each transfer.
Next time I think we will fly.
Thank you Journeys a la Carte for arranging
every detail of such a lovely river cruise. We
can’t wait for the next one !

T
he new season for Cheadle Camera Club has
begun in the in the Cheadle Fire Station
Community Room, Ashbourne Road.
Despite the name our camera club is not really
about cameras: it is much more about what people
do with cameras. The club aims to promote
interest, skills and enjoyment in photography and
we welcome people at all levels of skill and
experience. Space is limited, but there is room for
new members, on a first-come first-served basis,
and new blood is very welcome indeed.
Taking photographs nowadays is extremely
common but most images are doomed to languish
unseen and unappreciated. Cheadle Camera Club
provides a venue at which photos can be seen and
appreciated. At competitions, members’ photos are
exposed a knowledgeable and interested - generally
supportive - audience. By seeing and discussing
your own and others’ photos, hearing from experts
of new techniques and practices, visibly improved
images can be achieved. We aim, with practice and
application, to develop the ability to observe,
interpret and record a scene - landscape, portrait or
minute insect - and hope that the process of
learning will be both enjoyable and satisfying.
This year’s programme is designed to be
stimulating, with expert-led talks and practical
evenings. The competitions are based on topics
chosen by last year’s members. We arranged a
mystery tour last Autumn; this year, although the
exact destinations remain mysterious (dependent
on the vagaries of the weather), the area to be
visited is the Peak District. As last year, this will
allow people to create their own observations of
the same general scenes, at the same time – so
cloudy for one means cloudy for all. We also plan
to include a variety of subject types – landscape,
industry etc. Competition topics this year include
“Flora,” “Countryside, Nature and the Natural
World,” “Macro,” “Street Photography and/or
Reflections,” and of course, our photographs taken
on the Peak District trip.
A new venture is a number of open nights, to be
held on Mondays between club meetings. These
are for the exchange of information and ideas.
People will be welcome to bring specific practical
problems (“How do I do …?” or “What is going
wrong here?”), perhaps to discuss cameras and
software, the tools of the craft. Overall, the aim is
to go some way to answering the question: “How
do I make better pictures?” Expensive equipment
may help, but is rarely the whole answer. The
photographic process is sometimes limited by
gadgetry, but the most important tool is the one
between the ears - it really is the thought that
counts!
Our annual membership dues are unchanged at
£15, and visitors are asked to contribute £2 per
visit (refunded from their membership dues, if they
eventually become members). Meanwhile, please
visit our website www.cheadlecameraclub.co.uk. It
is a work in progress, but it does have some nice
photos, and, coming shortly, the programme for
the 2015/16 season.

Let The Voice Be With You
by Les Humphries of Rocester
A
nother issue is upon us, with Winter
looming as we start counting how many
more shoplifting days to Christmas, and
how much of a gloomy New Year we have to look
forward to as Tory cuts start to bite.
Their budgets as always, giveth with one hand,
and taketh away with the other from the people at
the bottom of the ladder (we thought we had seen
the last of Thatcherism, but it was always there
under the surface).
With the Labour Party in meltdown, and the
Tories rubbing their hands with glee, as they try to
bring the Trade Unions down, we could be
suffering oppression for some time, until people get
the guts to vote for UKIP, but I’ll have you crying
in a minute...
So changing the subject, I am going to talk
about other fears and phobias, and we all have
them don’t we? I think everyone has something
that makes them quiver just a little, whether it’s a
fear of the dark, of animals, a fear of open spaces
or whatever.
I have been very fortunate in having two
wonderful wives, both of whom had, or have
phobias bless ‘em. With my late first wife Maggie
it was thunder and lightning, she would unplug
everything electrical, pull the curtains, turn the
mirrors to the wall, and if she was on her own she
would hide in the cupboard under the stairs and
sit by candle light, once even taking my little
daughter Helen, and dog Inky with her.
Sandra the present Mrs. Humphries, has an
intense fear of spiders - even widgy ones! If she sees
one scampering up the wall or across the floor she
turns into a Roman Emperor shrieking ‘Kill it - kill
it’ hating me picking them up and taking them
outside in case they come back, and if I miss them
I am deemed to be useless, or having missed them
on purpose.
My brother Walter when he was a kid, hated
the full moon. He would lie in bed pointing and
chanting ‘Moon, Moon’, because sometimes you
could still see it through the curtains. Father even
had to put a blanket over the window on one
occasion. My sister in law Joyce has a fear of mice,
and goes all shivery just at the mention of the little
rodents. She can’t even look at pictures of them
without being affected.
In my case it’s chickens! Can’t stand the
horrible things (don’t mind eating them), but it’s
when they start strutting about making those awful
clucking noises that make me cringe. It goes back
to when I was a young boy on my way to school
and a farm hand had chopped the heads off several
chickens in a field, and their headless bodies were
racing around like English rugby players, I’ve never
liked them since (chickens, not English rugby
players, although...).
Anyway to cut a long story even longer, some
years ago Sandra and I took my parents to
Boscobel Hall, where King Charles II hid in the oak
tree to escape the Roundheads. They have a
Cafeteria in the grounds, so we decided to treat my
folks to lunch and as it was a lovely day we
thought we would sit outside, and whilst Sandra,
Mum and Dad went in to see what was on offer,
and I said I would get us a table. But strutting
around were some of the biggest chickens I had
ever seen in my life, but I bravely secured a table as
far away from the other diners as I could get,
thinking ‘They’ve got food so the chickens will be
around them’ - wrong- they all headed for me, and
I was quickly surrounded by the little cluckers,
despite shooing them, and accusing them of being
born to unmarried parents, so loud were my
protestations telling them to go forth and multiply
that Sandra and my Mum and Dad were laughing
their socks off as they could hear my cussing inside.
I even prefer duck eggs to this day...
I wonder if any of you have the same thoughts
as me towards the many bedroom scenes depicted
on the TV. Except on rare occasions, when two
people have allegedly had a night of illicit passion,
which you rarely see thank goodness, but what
rankles me is when we see them wake up in the
morning, usually the story has them late, they jump
out of bed, pull their clothes on, no wash or shave,
and rush off to work or wherever.
So this means they are going to be wearing the
same underpants or knickers which they slept in
(they always seem to sleep in their undies) all day.
If the female is in bed, she usually pulls the sheet up
around her neck to hide her modesty, even though
she has been less than modest the night before,
which always seems ludicrous to me. The first
thing I do in the morning is go for a pee before I do
anything else. They must have super bladders as
they never seem to get the urge to pass water the
lucky people!
As we had to get our columns in by the
beginning of August, due to Nigel’s knee operation,
which is going to give him a lot of post op. pain.
Hopefully by the time we go to press you will be
well on the way to recovery Nige’!
The same applies to Janet Downing, the
Conductor and Musical Director of the Churnet
Valley Male Voice Choir, who is still very poorly at
time of writing. The choir will have performed at
Hartshill with the Lorna Spode Singers on the 26th
of September just s few days ago, possibly still
without her (if that is not the case I apologise). I
personally will have missed the concert as I am
away. I sincerely hope that both of you are in
robust health as you read this.
The Denstone Players will be performing two
one act plays in November in the Village Hall, the
first ‘A Quiet Night’ will take place on the 19th,
20th, and 21st. The other has yet to be decided at
time of writing. All our regular supporters know
what to expect, and anyone looking for a great
night out with a lorra, lorra laughs come along,
have a drink and enjoy a fun experience.

“and now with treble soft

and gathering swallows twitter in the skies.”
From “Ode to Autumn”, Keats
A
nd indeed the Swallows are gathering along
the wires and then swooping and chattering
as they prepare to fly off to their winter
quarters. I’ll try to count them again, as usual, to
see how many return next year- less and less from
my observations.
We see lots of Goldfinches, though and they are
the prettiest of garden birds with their yellow and
red feathers and the ‘charm’(collective group) will
flock onto a teasel and completely strip it of its
seeds before moving on.
The cooler weather will make the wasps begin
to go drowsy and having suffered from several
stings this summer, they are not my favourite right
now! Wasps die off in winter, leaving just the
Queen to find somewhere cosy to hibernate, ready
for when it warms up.
Living in an old house, we tend to come across
several that are inspecting the accommodation and
they like crawling on carpets, so are easy to tread
on.
Hopefully they haven’t pestered the Bees too
much as they look for sweet things to eat, for there
are lots of Blackberries and fruit about.
On the moors, Heather will be flowering and
Bees love this plant. It also contributes to the
formation of peat, but in days gone by, it had many
uses, from flavourings, to dyes to beer.
It is also known as ‘ling’, from the Norse
language and is regenerated by grazing with cattle
or sheep or by burning.
Having finished our combining- the stubble
would have been burnt off at one time, killing
disease and fertilising the soil, but now the straw is
important to us and, after the straw bales have all
been moved, we are trying to get the field work
well under way, before we have to start thinking of
bringing in or feeding livestock.
For a change, we are growing stubble turnips
for the sheep this time and, although it got attacked
by flea beetle, enough has re-grown to give them
something to nibble on as they get ready for this
years breeding season.
We’ve had the summer shows and the sheep
sales will be held now, as plans for next years lamb
crop begin to take shape.
Ted will be around ten months old and we
would expect him to be settling down to his job
now and understanding what we want him to do.
I must say, up to now, he is showing signs of being
one of the best sheepdogs we’ve had!

Karen’s Cake Corner
by Karen Hill
Pavlova with Lemon Chiffon Cream,
Berries and Edible Flowers
Along with my love for making cakes, I
have always loved meringues. I have been
making them for years and realised I have yet
to include a recipe. Here is one of my
favourites. I have made lemon cream, but you
can just use whipped cream for this recipe and
is equally delicious. This dessert in great as it
always looks so impressive, but is so easy to
make!
6 large free range egg whites
300g caster sugar
1 tsp cornflour
1 tsp white wine vinegar
500 ml double or whipping cream
100g good quality lemon curd
Zest of a lemon, juice of ½ lemon, plus extra
zest to serve
blueberries, and edible flowers for decoration
Firstly, preheat your oven to 160˚C.
Prepare your baking sheet with a large square
of greaseproof paper, and draw a 23” diameter
circle as a guide for your meringue mix.
In your blender, whisk the egg whites until
they form stiff peaks. Gradually whisk in the
sugar, followed by the cornflour and the
vinegar. Pile the mixture onto the greaseproof
paper to form a circle.
Bake for 1 hour, then turn the oven off and
leave the meringue to cool in the oven with the
door slightly open. The meringue should be
crisp around the edges and the top.
For the topping, whip the cream with the
lemon curd, zest and juice until it forms soft
peaks. Pile the cream on top of your meringue.
You can serve the meringue as it is now, or add
lots of fresh berries and edible flowers for
decoration.
There are so many variations I make of this
dessert but I can never seem to make one big
enough for my family. No one is ever satisfied
with one slice!

Have I got news for you
by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter
Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions
Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a
senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at
Staffordshire University.
Winter draws on... and other music hall
gags
Winter draws on – as they used to say for a
cheap laugh in the music halls – and you can make
a date in your diary.
Saturday November 7th is this year’s Uttoxeter
Bonfire and Fireworks Display. We start just before
seven in the evening and there are two fireworks
shows – a smaller one just before the fire is lit and
the main display at 7.30pm.
I look forward to seeing you there. But before
looking forward, I thought I should look back at a
couple of events this summer which I was reminded
of by the editor of The Uttoxeter and Cheadle
Voice.
He said: ‘I see your old mate Nicky Campbell
will receive an OBE in the 2015 Birthday Honours
list for his services to children.’
And he made the fair point that it is unusual and
quite an honour for a journalist and TV presenter
to be rewarded in this way.
Nicky is the patron of the British Association for
Adoption and Fostering, and I am sure that as an
adopted child himself, he has thrown as much
enthusiasm into that role as he does into all his
professional work.
He is one of the most focussed and driven
individuals I have come across, which explains his
success.
From Radio One to number one host of
the TV studio debate
Not everyone could make the switch from
Radio One DJ and game show host to news and
current affairs presenter. Despite the showbiz
background, he has presented a host of
serious factual programmes and debates.
With a self-confidence easily
mistaken for arrogance, there are few
better presenters of studio debates. He’s
been known to upset a few guests and
more than a few production staff. I was
disappointed that he was the only former
colleague who declined to be interviewed
for my book on broadcast journalism.
He said he didn’t like to over-analyse
what he does, and I can accept that.
But he’s always been very
professional on air, and has the knack of
being able to effortlessly repeat questions
or comments suggested in his earpiece by
the producer sitting in the TV gallery. His
own sharp intellect combines seamlessly
with the input of a trusted producer –
and there have been none he trusted
more than his old friend Doug Carnegie.
They worked together - and so briefly
did I - on what was once the most popular regional
programme on British TV, Central Weekend Live.
It was what Danny Baker would call a ‘nuts and
sluts’ show, though often with a serious purpose.
Only in the Green Room of that show would you
see a Russian Orthodox Bishop chatting to a leather
fetishist and a Times newspaper columnist. And
that was just the production team.
Sorry about that predictable joke, but that sort
of crazy mix of people made life in broadcasting
really interesting. The same was true of our
graduation ceremony at Staffordshire University in
July, always one of the highlights of the year.
A Fab ending to a dramatic story
Among this year’s graduates was Fabrice
Muamba, the footballer who collapsed on the pitch
and nearly died during an FA Cup tie between
Spurs and Bolton just over three years ago.
His heart stopped for 78 minutes, but amazingly
after medical intervention on the pitch and a month
in hospital, he recovered. Although doctors advised
him to quit professional sport, he has been
determined to forge a new career as a pundit and
coach, with occasional celebrity appearances such
as his contribution to Gareth Malone’s Children in
Need choir.
He has had a truly eventful life for someone not
yet 30 years old. His father fled the Democratic
Republic of Congo to seek political asylum in
Britain, and despite arriving here aged 11, unable
to speak English, Fabrice achieved 10 GCSEs and
three A levels. He played for Arsenal, Birmingham,
Bolton and England at under 21 level before the
dramatic end to his career.
While it would be unprofessional to comment
on the performance of an individual student, I can
safely say he was always a joy to have around, and
more than a match for the banter of the other
professional sportsmen and women on the specialist
fast-track degree he completed. Well done, Fab.
Me and Staffordshire University Graduate Fabrice Muamba,
the retired Premier League footballer, who quit after his
heart stopped on the pitch.

Uttoxeter Rotary Club hail
important breakthrough in Africa
3
0 years ago Rotary pledged to eliminate polio from around the world and since that time
Rotarians throughout the world have focussed their efforts on achieving that aim. It has
been a monumental task, with many organisations involved, for example World Health
Organisation and the Gates Foundation. Fund raising plays a critical role to support the
efforts of those doing the hard work on the ground. In Africa alone $688 million has been
spent on the task - hopefully the end is now in sight.
After many years of perseverance, by the end of 2012 Polio was only endemic in three
countries in the world – Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The good news is that it is now one year since Nigeria last reported a case of polio and it’s
a critical step on the path towards a polio-free Africa. It was only a decade ago that polio
struck 12,631 people in Africa in one year – three quarters of all cases in the world. So this is
cause for celebration for Rotarians, not only in Uttoxeter but all around the world.
For Africa to be certified polio-free by the World Health Organization, it must go two more
years without a case of polio. To do this, all children in Nigeria must continue to receive the
polio vaccine, including those in hard-to-reach areas. Thanks are due to the many thousands
of volunteers and health workers from Africa and around the world who have devoted
countless hours to immunizing the children there, who now have the opportunity to lead
healthier lives.

H
undreds of people turned out to enjoy Churchill Road
Festival in Cheadle on Bank Holiday Sunday.
Officially opened at 1p.m. the fun went on into the
evening and with the weather being kinder than expected
people were able to sit out and enjoy all the entertainment
provided.
‘During the afternoon everyone enjoyed re-enactment
displays from The Lincoln County Regulators who held
various battles in authentic dress with a backdrop of an
original looking camp. The shoot outs caused quite a stir with
the sound from the guns and the storylines delighting all those
fortunate enough to watch the goings on’ said the Vice
Chairman of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Cllr
Julie Bull.
Trade and charity stands laid out their stalls on the
Churchill Road Recreation Ground site. The funfair rides
were free of charge and there was a new competition this year
for the youngsters - a doughnut eating contest.... where the
winner had to be the first to eat a doughnut without licking
his/her lips. And the young winner was Owen Uzzell of
Edgefield Road, Longton who won a Wrights buffet for a
children’s party.
The nationwide famous Wrights Pie eating competition
was extremely well contended with the winner for this year
being Robert Johnson of Oakamoor Road, Cheadle who wins
a pie for each day of the year.
A heavily contended open darts contest was won by Stuart
Livesley with second going to Peter (Curly) Johnson and the
semi finalists being Mark Thompson and Rick Lovatt.
Music from Fionix enthralled everyone in the marquee
before a band lead people to dance the night away.

The Royal
Ride
D
uncan Cowans, who has owned his hairdressing
business in Cheadle since 1977, recently completed his
4th charity cycle ride to raise funds for the Dougie
Mac Hospice in Barlaston. This is a cause very close to
Duncan’s heart as the Hospice nurses showed great
compassion while caring for his late mother, Sheila, during
the last hours of her life.
The Royal Ride lasted four days, starting at The
Huntsman pub in Cheadle and ending at Windsor Castle via
Sandringham Palace. Duncan cycled the 300 odd miles with
three friends, Ian Collier, Tony Lovatt and Tony Sanders,
along with two back up drivers, Alan Shenton and myself,
Cecily Cowans. Ian completed the ride, raising an incredible
total of nearly £1000, in memory of his late partner, Chris,
whom he lost due to cancer in April.
We all set off at 6.00 from Cheadle on the morning of
Day1. It was a pleasant cycle ride through six counties taking
just over 5 hours. Having arrived safely in Grantham we
enjoyed a well-deserved pint and a meal before a very early
night! Day 2 took us through Lincolnshire to Norfolk, on
busier roads, ending at Sandringham. In good spirits, again
we had an early night to prepare for the following day. Day
3, from Kings Lynn to Cambridge, went very well. We cycled
along good roads and cycle tracks through beautiful villages
and towns. We all enjoyed a meal together and, yet again, an
early night to prepare for our 4th and longest day. After many
miles covered on the fourth and final day, we arrived at
Windsor safe and sound. Throughout the whole ride, we had
only one puncture and no illnesses or injuries. The weather
was fine and dry. It was all a great success and we welcome
any further donations via Duncan’s just giving page. Many
thanks to all our sponsors. Now to plan the next one...

aving just returned from a long weekend
in Iceland it is hard not to give you
recipes using smoked puffin, fermented
shark, reindeer testicles or Minke whale. I have
decided, this month, to give you a Scandinavian
dish nonetheless as it’s an easy and unusual
starter or main course. It can be prepared a day
or two in advance and then baked when you
need it.
It is, however, autumn when the fruits in the
garden are ready and this year I have an
abundance of apples, pears and peaches. For
those of you who enjoy baking and preserving
it’s a bust time of year and personally enjoy fruit
in breads as well so do try some of those recipes.
By way of a bit of advertising I shall be doing
two cookery shows at The Garrick theatre in
Lichfield on October 8th which are now
sponsored by Arthur Price. Come along and join
in.

Cheadle property
expert launches new
lettings and
property
management
agency
T
he lettings market in Cheadle has a brand new platform
thanks to the exciting launch of privately owned
company, DJC Lettings.
With more than 25 years industry experience, property
agent Deborah Coates of Cheadle is the face behind the
exciting new company which has had a hugely successful
start. The 46 year old, who has been working in the field for
more than two decades, is now looking to match local
landlords with their perfect tenants through her new
residential lettings and property management business.
Priding herself on offering a professional, friendly and
efficient service, Deborah will be on hand seven days a week
to ensure that accompanied viewing and landlord visits can be
arranged at a time to suit you.
“Here at DJC Lettings, we concentrate on providing the
best service in a modern, efficient manner.“We pride ourselves
in being able to offer advice to landlords and tenants, and we
run several schemes to help facilitate the process. “Whether
you are a landlord seeking responsible, quality tenants for
your property or a tenant searching for a home we are here to
help.
Deborah’s passion for the property industry is already
playing a key role in making her business a success.“The main
advantage for me is that I’ve been working in property in the
Cheadle area for many years and I know a lot of people
locally. When people know you they feel reassured in dealing
with you because you already have a level of trust. Striving to
be at the forefront of the property lettings market, DJC
Lettings is a forward thinking business based on traditional
values which - alongside genuinely competitive rates - makes
them a great option for tenants and landlords alike.
Whether you are looking for a let only service or full
management of your property, DJC Lettings will have a
package to suit you. I would also be happy to hear from any
prospective landlords thinking about purchasing an
investment property who might like advice on the type of
house to purchase with a buy-to-let in mind. Investing in
rental property offers a great return for your money and more
people seem to be looking into this as a long term investment.

Trio skydive for
disabled children
T
hree ladies used to the more tranquil
setting of Frank Innes Property Sales
and Lettings in Uttoxeter decided to
spice up their weekend by jumping out of a
plane at 10,000 feet speeding through the air
at up to 120 mph.
The “once in a lifetime” skydive gave the
group the worst and best of feelings as they
headed towards firm ground. All three will
remember the day plus disabled and
terminally ill children will benefit from
fundraising as they have already raised
£1,300 of their £1,500 target for leading
charity Newlife Foundation for Disabled
Children.
Emma Watkinson, Branch Manager for
Frank Innes at Uttoxeter said: “It is the most
nerve-racking thing anyone could ever sign
themselves up to do, but it is also the most
exhilarating experience you’ll probably ever
have.
“Just think of all of those children and
their parents who are facing adversity every
day, hurling yourself out of a plane is nothing
in comparison.”
Newlife is the largest charity funder of
specialist equipment for children with
disabilities and terminal illness in the UK and
has helped families by spending £13,663,468
through equipment grants for special
disability equipment. Wheelchairs, walkers,
beds, seating, communication aids and other
equipment that help give children
independence, keep them safe, relieve pain
and overcome challenges.
Newlife also provide Emergency Bed
Loans, Play Therapy Pod loans and a vital
Just Can’t Wait Service for families in need of
instant help.
Together we can really change the lives of
children with disability and terminal illness –
supporting them to experience and enjoy life
and all that we take for granted. For more
information about Newlife Foundation, go to
www.newlifecharity.co.uk. All support
services can be accessed via the Newlife
Nurse Helpline – 0800 902 0095 (free from
UK landlines and mobiles) or email
nurses@newlifecharity.co.uk.
The Skydive took place at Tilstock Jump
Centre in Whitchurch, Shropshire. A Tandem
skydive is the easiest and most popular of all
skydives. It requires only 30 minutes training
before you get to jump strapped to your
instructor. The BPA (British Parachute
Association) qualified tandem instructor does
all of the hard work for you.
Keleigh Tomlinson, Newlife’s Midlands
Regional Fundraising & Awareness Manager
who organised the jump was full of praise for
efforts of the three.
“The staff at Frank Innes in Uttoxeter
have worked hard to raise £1,300 to fund
vital equipment for children with disabilities.
Taking on the challenge of a skydive is a
once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“All three ladies were incredibly brave
and I am thrilled that they chose to jump in
aid of Newlife Foundation. Thank you.
“Our next Newlife Skydive Day is May
14th 2016 at Tilstock Jump Centre in
Whitchurch, Shropshire.”
If you fancy taking on the challenge
please contact Keleigh via email:
ktomlinson@newlifecharity.co.uk or call her
directly on: 07973473268.

CHRISTMAS!
T
he Sun shone and there was a great attendance by villagers and those
from further afield at this year’s Denstone Show held on 5th September.
Entries were at near record levels for the 70 plus classes which attracted
gardeners, arts and crafts devotees, cooks and photographers of all ages.
Outside the village hall there were a range of stalls offering attractive craft
products and music was provided by the Uttoxeter Junior Brass Band and
well-known local musicians Sanj Nandi & Ann Litchfield.
A big attraction was the Fun Dog Show organized by Hooligan Hounds
and a wonderful display of birds of prey from Mark Titterton. Rent-a-Beast
provided more hands on experience for those who like their ‘creepy crawlies’
up close and personal. Local author Caroline Wedd read from her new book
‘The Walnut Tree’ and Celine Whyte demonstrated Chinese Calligraphy.
There was an excellent display of classic vehicles of all kinds at Denstone
Hall Farm Shop and The Tavern was open all afternoon to slake a few thirsts.
The Show raised funds for the Parish Council’s defibrillator campaign
which has been well supported by both local community groups and
businesses including Alton Towers, Denstone Youth Fund, The Uttoxeter
Knights, The Uttoxeter Lions and the proceeds from the raffle at the Denstone
Show. The Parish Council now has sufficient funds for its first defibrillator
and will continue to raise funds for more.
Denstone Show a great success!

All Rights Reserved. Copyright Community Voice Publications Ltd. Designed and Produced by noel@sergeantdesign.com It’s great to be talking to you again after my recent operation. Thanks to all the folk who have asked how I am doing, much appreciated. I’m well into my physio programme now and managing to get around a little which is great. It seems that the NHS is constantly in the media with negativity the main thrust of the coverage but in my recent experience I cannot fault the dedicated staff who are on the frontline of care and service. I received top notch nursing at Cannock Chase Hospital and the after care has been second to none. Perhaps the media should concentrate on the positive parts of the NHS which in my opinion is the best in the world! Negativity seems to be the generating factor in our TV news coverage too. Every single story seems to be about disasters or ghastly criminal acts. There are lots of excellent feelgood stories out there surely so come on let’s get an equal and fair view of what’s happening in our country and around the world. Mind you, watching the TV news coverage of the European Union’s pathetic handling of the current migration tragedy is astounding! It reflects how toothless the EU really is and how the countries which make up the pact just can’t function together. It looks to me as though it is the wealthy countries within the EU who make the decisions and inflict their mandates onto the poorer neighbours! What kind of ‘Union’ is that? I believe what is happening within the EU now will have disastrous consequences for the world in the future and will go down in history as a massive error in not acting more decisively and humanely right at the beginning of this very sad tragedy. It looks to me as though the EU and its leaders have now got so many problems which they can’t address that the very future of the organisation is at risk. They also have the problems in Ukraine and around that region of course, added to what is happening within their own countries at the moment! Back to home, it can’t be too many days to Christmas can it? No doubt the shop windows will be dressed in their usual festive slant in this month of October. Don’t forget to shop locally to support our community businesses! I hope you enjoy reading The Voice colour magazine. I’ll speak to you next time... Lank’s Lore By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters I have always been interested in the old canal systems in England especially the ones around our area. Up to the late 1800’s the canals were used to carry goods all over the country which nowadays of course is done by road with the advent of new motorway systems springing up country wide and the introduction of the Juggernauts, making the movement of goods a lot quicker to cope with today’s hectic demands and speedier way of life. Uttoxeter was no exception to the era of canal transport with a basin situated off the Cheadle Road with a huge wharf and warehouse which acted as the hub for the proceedings. When you think about it people must have had a lot of patience in those days when goods they had ordered were to be delivered by barge, saying that a barge travels at approximately 4 miles per hour, it must have taken weeks on end for their consignment to reach them. Nowadays people go berserk if the goods they have ordered do not arrive by next day delivery! When the canals started to become un- economical in the late 1800’s the wharf building closed down and it became a factory for Richard Cooper & Sons manufacturing ladies corsets and the like and up to a few years ago employed quite a lot of local labour. Unfortunately this came to an end and after having various uses ended up being demolished to make way for another housing project. Great shame it was a real landmark in the town in it’s time, but that is progress for you! In the early 90’s I was approached by a local company to produce some advertising and commercial print work for them. They owned and hired out narrow boats for pleasure cruising on the local canals. After completing their requests they made me a generous offer I could barely refuse on hiring one of their barges for the weekend to give it a try. As much as the interest that I had in canals I never thought about the idea of an holiday on the inland waterway systems before and liking my comfort on my few days off I can grab a year, I took a lot of persuading but finally succumbed mainly with the conversation leading to the amount of proper pubs (which are my weakness) available to me on such an endeavour. I could not convince my wife that it would be something different than we were used to, to have a go and since I had committed myself to the hire of the vessel, I rounded up some colleagues of mine and we decided to make it a man’s weekend break of it. My mates and I travelled by car up to Longport on the Friday morning where the boat was moored up and after pick-up we set off on the Trent & Mersey Canal branching off onto the Cauldon Canal mooring up for the night and visiting the Black Lion pub at Consall Forge for liquid sustenance. The next day, the Saturday we progressed on, picking up the Leek branch of the Cauldon Canal and travelled on through Cheddleton up to our destination at Leek again where we moored up for the evening taking in the delights of this marvellous Staffordshire market town. The final day the Sunday, we headed back to our base at Longport to return the boat taking in the sites of Cheddleton Flint Mill, the Staircase Locks at Eturia and seeing places that I have never seen before from a totally different viewpoint My colleagues and I had now got the bug and with the knowledge of a friend of ours we hired boats from other operators in different locations and continued for a number of years exploring the absolute delights of the British Canal System. We saw during these days some marvellous feats of engineering along with some old buildings that have been carefully restored, met some very friendly, interesting people and of course visited some pubs which take some finding by road. One of our favourite trips was on the Llangollen canal in Wales. We picked up the canal at Ellesmere in Shropshire and travelled up to our destination the Pontcysylite Aqueduct at Trevor Nr Wrexham. This to me is an absolutely fantastic run. Even for anyone that does not hold any interest in canals you cannot fail to be impressed by the scenery, the ingenious locks that you pass through, the tunnel at Chirk and of course the Pontcysylite Aqueduct itself. Built by Thomas Telford & William Jessop in 1805 it consists of a cast iron trough, 11ft wide, 1007 ft long and 5.25ft deep, supported by 18 hollow masonry piers each span being 53ft wideand is 126ft high. It is the highest and longest aqueduct in Britain and is a Grade 1 listed building. Please forgive me if I have been rambling on but structures of this nature make you proud to be English and it makes up for some of the so called modern architecture that we have to suffer today, Till next time, LANK. Outstanding results Painsley Catholic College is, once again, celebrating a set of truly outstanding GCSE results with 80% of the Year 11 students at the non-selective academy achieving 5 A*-C grades including English and maths. Furthermore, a record-breaking number of Painsley students have exceeded the level of progress expected of children at secondary level. The results place Painsley as one of the highest achieving schools in the whole of the country. Mr Stephen Bell, Principal at the College, said, “I am delighted to report these wonderful results. We have a determination that all of the children fulfil their individual potential and are proud of the responsible attitude that they adopt towards their studies. The results secure the College’s reputation as a centre of excellence where children are happy and successful in a caring, studious and disciplined environment. To achieve these results in evermore rigorous GCSE examinations is testimony to the efforts of the students, staff and directors.” Mr Bell takes the trust that parents put in him and the College to care, guide and educate their child very seriously and everybody at Painsley works tirelessly to ensure that every child’s ambitions are realised. Staff and directors aim to ensure that Painsley provides top quality state-funded education which is too often equated to fee-paying schools or selective schools. It may be tempting, therefore, to imagine that it will be difficult for parents to obtain a place for their child at Painsley – particularly those who are non-Catholics. However, there are more places on offer for September 2016 and parents are encouraged to apply for a place to secure a fantastic education for their child which will set them up for the rest of their lives. The closing date for parents to make their Secondary School application on-line via the Staffordshire County Council website is 31st October 2015 at the following address: www.staffordshire.gov.uk/education/schoolsandcolleges/admissions/admissions.aspx £57,587.56!! This is the total raised so far for Mary’s Meals during Painsley’s 50th year! The College would like to congratulate every single member of the Painsley family on this magnificent, world-record amount for the charity to receive from a school. This staggering amount will enable Painsley to feed 4,720 children for a whole year - a magnificent way to mark Painsley’s 50th year! The cheque will be presented to Mary’s Meals over the coming weeks. Thank you to every member of the Painsley family!!!! M ark proposed to me at the TT races in the Isle of Man last year, it was a complete surprise! Mark went to Stone for his stag night, his friends and work colleagues all turned up for an excellent night out. I went to Liverpool with 50 friends where we had a fantastic weekend finishing with a night at the Cavern Club for the Beatles tribute night. We had the most fantastic wedding day. My daughters and I went to Shades hairdressers in the morning to have hair and nails done then off to Ipstones to my mums house to get ready. I had a lovely ride to church in a Range Rover Vogue with family friends Geoff and Linda. the 2 flower girls, my nieces, Brea and Lexi Richards, who are only aged 2, drove themselves to church in an electric car! It was such a happy day with my daughters Maisie and Scarlet and my niece Ezra Colclough as my bridesmaids. My mum was to walk me down the aisle as I had sadly lost my dad 3 years ago. As the church doors opened and I saw all our family and friends there, it was brilliant, I didn’t expect the church to be quite so full! The vicar, Michael Evans, gave a wonderful service which everyone enjoyed. Mark and I didn’t feel nervous at all on the day, which we were very surprised. We had decided to hold the wedding reception at the Winking Man as that is where we had our first date. We had more photos taken in the beautiful evening light with the Roaches in the background, then had a hog roast and a beautiful wedding cake made by Mandy’s Cakes of Tean, and partied until the early hours. We then went to the Old Hall hotel, in Buxton for 2 nights then on to a family holiday in Cornwall. I would like to say a special thank you to my sister Diane Richards who made my beautiful broach bouquet and all the bridesmaid dresses , room and church decorations. Also to Mandy’s Cakes and Pete and Julie at the Winking Man for making such a special day and a big thank you to Denise, Steve and Alana Wheat for all your time, support and beautiful photography. • 16. O n Sunday August 9th 2015 a piece of Cheadle’s Great War history was recreated in the market square, namely the requisition of local horses by the military, which took place in August 1914. The event, called Cheadle Remembers the War Horses, was organised by the Cheadle Discovery Group as part of Cheadle’s ongoing commemorations of the Great War and was partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The main attraction of the event was the gathering of local horses on the Market Square, they were all led away by uniformed riders representing the military officials of 1914. Music at the event was provided by the Uttoxeter Brass Band (Development Section) and the award winning play ‘Letters from the Front’ was performed by the Youth Section of CATS. The event ended with the unveiling of a plaque and interpretation board, a permanent reminder of the events of August 1914. Later in the year as part of the project a sculpture will be unveiled on the main car park, this will be in honour of the animals that lost their lives in the Great War. I f you are an experienced ‘bigger’ dog owner looking for a new dog to come and live with you then Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society would love to hear from you. The Society is caring for two smashing huskies, one called Harry and one Teddy. There is also Zeus who is a lovely English Bull Terrier X and May a really nice Doberman X. Harry and Zeus have been going out regularly on walks together and are brilliant, walkers are queuing up for them! May was quite frightened when she arrived but has gained such confidence since being at the kennels and really deserves a lovely new home. Teddy is a big lad with a very nice nature. They all need to find their forever homes with people who have the right environment and circumstances for them. They cannot spend their lives being passed around as seems possibly to have been the case with some of them. They need owners who understand the needs of a bigger dog and who can commit fully to them. Harry for example needs an ultra secure home as he is a ‘houdini’ whereas Teddy can be quite loud when left! Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society Looking for homes- for 2 pairs of collies! C headle & District Animal Welfare Society is currently caring for two pairs of collies- Bill & Ben and Cally & Carly. It’s a big ask but it would be such a shame to separate them from their pairs as they do rely on one another totally and get quite upset when parted if only for a short period. Bill & Ben are brothers, aged 3 years. Cally and Carly look to be sisters aged around 12 months old. Can anyone provide the right loving home they so deserve. They are not ‘working dogs’ but need a nice home environment with someone who can give them the training and full attention they have lacked to date. They are only young and have gained such confidence since being at the kennels and have come on in leaps and bounds with regard to lead training and walking out. They love to play and would no doubt be great at agility type activities. They are such quick learners with lovely temperaments. Bill & Ben Cally Carly Harry & Zeus May Further details about these and all the dogs can be found on the Society’s website: www.cheadleanimalwelfare.org.uk If you have the right circumstances to offer a good home to any of the dogs please contact Brenda Jackson at Cheadle & District Animal Welfare Society. A multi-talented young circus performer wowed the crowd at this year’s Lark in the Park - the free family fun day in Bramshall Road Park, Uttoxeter. Sam Goodburn is the British freestyle unicycle champion and young juggler of the year. At just 21 years old he stunned and surprised spectators with a series of stunts that defied the audience’s expectations. Some of the crowd might have seen a juggler. Others might have seen a unicyclist. And some might have seen someone balancing on a tightrope. But never all three at the same time. But that’s exactly what Sam did. He’s believed to be the only person who does, and to make the feat even more remarkable the unicycle had a fully-inflated tyre, rather than locking the rim of the wheel onto the high wire. Punch and Judy man Professor Bauble and DJ Matt Goodwin – with a series of party games including a snow machine – also entertained youngsters at the event. Dave Eadie, the President of Uttoxeter Lions Club, who run the event, with support from East Staffs Borough Council, said: ‘I think the entertainment in the arena was among the most popular we’ve ever had at ten years of Lark in the Park. ‘It’s supposed to be an event for families at the end of the school summer holidays and the way the kids responded it obviously reached the target audience.’ Sam Goodburn, who is from Poole on the south coast, said the show had been really enjoyable, despite the uneven arena surface, which is a feature of the field due to the historic farming on the site. He was booked after appearing briefly at last year’s Christmas Cracker night when his act was limited by the cold weather and heavy rain. The arena entertainment also included the Uttoxeter Town Band, who played two flawless sets of modern and traditional tunes. Among the free children’s rides were bungee trampolines, roundabouts, donkey rides, a rodeo bull, jousting and a ferris wheel. Another new attraction was a short course archery range run by Uttoxeter Archery Club. Youngsters had a chance to try the Olympic sport, with real bows and arrows, in a controlled and safe setting. Keith takes over in what will be the 80th anniversary of the granting of the Rotary Charter to the Uttoxeter Club in October 1935. The Club was founded in March that year when Rotarian S H Elkes, then a member of the Stafford Club, was joined by Sam Elkes and M Longson at a meeting in Elkes Café and they agreed to form the Club. The Inaugural Meeting was held on 19th March and 22 members signed the Founders Roll. The Founder President was Tom Orme of another well-known Uttoxeter family. Today, the Club has 38 members and meets on Tuesday evenings at The Robin Hood at Bramshall. New President of Uttoxeter Rotary Club Jessica looks for Christmas Helpers C ommunity Fundraiser for Marie Curie Jessica Herrington launched a plea to the people of Uttoxeter and Cheadle to help raise hundreds of pounds this November and December. The charity needs more volunteers to help man its cash collections at supermarkets throughout the area, to make sure every hour of every collection is covered. Marie Curie organise supermarket collections around the festive season, raising funds to provide one-to-one nursing care for terminally ill people in their own home. Jessica Herrington, Community Fundraiser said: “We have a amazing volunteers in Uttoxeter and Cheadle, and a fantastic fundraising group, who give their time to collect each year, but we always need more volunteers to make sure we don’t miss out on valuable collecting time and therefore valuable donations from festive shoppers. We’re really lucky in that the local supermarkets and shopping centres have been so generous in offering us dates to collect – we just want to make sure we make the most of this opportunity to raise much needed funds for cancer care.” She added: “By giving us just two hours of your time this Christmas to help collect in a supermarket, you’ll be helping us raise much needed funds. Christmas is a time for families and our nurses will again be working over the festive period to provide vital care and treatment to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses, enabling them to be at home, surrounded by their families and the things they hold most dear. Please get in touch today if you would like to give up a few hours to help fund local cancer care. For further information about the collections, please call the fundraising office on 0161 255 2800 or email Jessica.Herrington@mariecurie.org.uk

O ur first river cruise since one on the Nile several years ago. We were delighted to find ourselves on board Riviera Travel’s (150 pax) brand new “Charles Dickens”. We loved the garland attached to the boat to celebrate it’s maiden voyage! The “hotel” crew had been in training and all was ready for us. Minor teething problems (as you would expect on a new boat) milk jugs on tables too small (so we just used teapots). We travelled by train (others flew but suffered delays) to Brussels for boarding at Cologne after a three hour coach transfer. Others flew but also suffered delays getting to the boat as the transferring coach had to meet later flights. So we did not board until 6.00 pm and there was no time to gather ourselves and visit either city or cathedral which closed at 7.00 pm. We chose to cruise upstream (the Swiss end being more interesting). Cruising against the river flow made sunbathing and reading more comfortable with less wind over the top deck. Our first port of call was Koblenz where we were free to roam, enjoy the cable car across the river and a holiday ice cream or two, all in bright sun. Next day we cruised round the Boppard “S” bend, through the steep sided Rhine Gorge and past castles to the statue of the sailors’ temptress Loreley On reaching Rudesheim with its fascinating mechanical music museum we enjoyed plentiful offerings of wine and ‘Asbach’ liqueur coffee. The river now widens and we were struck by the enormous commercial use to which it is put - with many more barges than tourist boats. A railway on each side of the river carried much freight – both better than on the roads as in U.K. We passed through several impressive locks with only a few inches to spare on each side of the boat. The next port of call was Strasbourg in France (passports were never required) with its superb cathedral within walking distance (and more designer ice-creams). Having arrived at Basel we were taken first to Lake Titisee in the Black Forest where the eponymous gateaux were delicious. The last day proved to be the highlight of the cruise with the all-day excursion ashore. Our coach visited Lucerne with its Chapel bridge and old picturesque buildings followed by quite a long drive to Interlaken where we boarded a rack and pinion railway up the mountain. At the top there was a pleasant cafe and large alpine garden with views across to the snow covered Jungfrau and other alpine peaks – outstandingly beautiful. Food served onboard was entirely appropriate buffet lunches and served dinners. On one evening we were able to join “fine dining” in smaller surroundings. John was delighted to be able to visit the wheelhouse and engine room, such was the informal and welcoming atmosphere on board. All in all, an excellent cruise with just the right combination of morning relaxation on board and afternoon shore excursions - all included (nothing extra to pay!) The TGV serves Basel so we were hoping for an easy journey back but we had not realised the difficulty of dragging our luggage on a hot day over uneven surfaces at each transfer. Next time I think we will fly. Thank you Journeys a la Carte for arranging every detail of such a lovely river cruise. We can’t wait for the next one ! Despite the name our camera club is not really about cameras: it is much more about what people do with cameras. The club aims to promote interest, skills and enjoyment in photography and we welcome people at all levels of skill and experience. Space is limited, but there is room for new members, on a first-come first-served basis, and new blood is very welcome indeed. Taking photographs nowadays is extremely common but most images are doomed to languish unseen and unappreciated. Cheadle Camera Club provides a venue at which photos can be seen and appreciated. At competitions, members’ photos are exposed a knowledgeable and interested - generally supportive - audience. By seeing and discussing your own and others’ photos, hearing from experts of new techniques and practices, visibly improved images can be achieved. We aim, with practice and application, to develop the ability to observe, interpret and record a scene - landscape, portrait or minute insect - and hope that the process of learning will be both enjoyable and satisfying. This year’s programme is designed to be stimulating, with expert-led talks and practical evenings. The competitions are based on topics chosen by last year’s members. We arranged a mystery tour last Autumn; this year, although the exact destinations remain mysterious (dependent on the vagaries of the weather), the area to be visited is the Peak District. As last year, this will allow people to create their own observations of the same general scenes, at the same time – so cloudy for one means cloudy for all. We also plan to include a variety of subject types – landscape, industry etc. Competition topics this year include “Flora,” “Countryside, Nature and the Natural World,” “Macro,” “Street Photography and/or Reflections,” and of course, our photographs taken on the Peak District trip. A new venture is a number of open nights, to be held on Mondays between club meetings. These are for the exchange of information and ideas. People will be welcome to bring specific practical problems (“How do I do …?” or “What is going wrong here?”), perhaps to discuss cameras and software, the tools of the craft. Overall, the aim is to go some way to answering the question: “How do I make better pictures?” Expensive equipment may help, but is rarely the whole answer. The photographic process is sometimes limited by gadgetry, but the most important tool is the one between the ears - it really is the thought that counts! Our annual membership dues are unchanged at £15, and visitors are asked to contribute £2 per visit (refunded from their membership dues, if they eventually become members). Meanwhile, please visit our website www.cheadlecameraclub.co.uk. It is a work in progress, but it does have some nice photos, and, coming shortly, the programme for the 2015/16 season. • 30. 30 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. Thank you for your support. Let The Voice Be With You by Les Humphries of Rocester A nother issue is upon us, with Winter looming as we start counting how many more shoplifting days to Christmas, and how much of a gloomy New Year we have to look forward to as Tory cuts start to bite. Their budgets as always, giveth with one hand, and taketh away with the other from the people at the bottom of the ladder (we thought we had seen the last of Thatcherism, but it was always there under the surface). With the Labour Party in meltdown, and the Tories rubbing their hands with glee, as they try to bring the Trade Unions down, we could be suffering oppression for some time, until people get the guts to vote for UKIP, but I’ll have you crying in a minute... So changing the subject, I am going to talk about other fears and phobias, and we all have them don’t we? I think everyone has something that makes them quiver just a little, whether it’s a fear of the dark, of animals, a fear of open spaces or whatever. I have been very fortunate in having two wonderful wives, both of whom had, or have phobias bless ‘em. With my late first wife Maggie it was thunder and lightning, she would unplug everything electrical, pull the curtains, turn the mirrors to the wall, and if she was on her own she would hide in the cupboard under the stairs and sit by candle light, once even taking my little daughter Helen, and dog Inky with her. Sandra the present Mrs. Humphries, has an intense fear of spiders - even widgy ones! If she sees one scampering up the wall or across the floor she turns into a Roman Emperor shrieking ‘Kill it - kill it’ hating me picking them up and taking them outside in case they come back, and if I miss them I am deemed to be useless, or having missed them on purpose. My brother Walter when he was a kid, hated the full moon. He would lie in bed pointing and chanting ‘Moon, Moon’, because sometimes you could still see it through the curtains. Father even had to put a blanket over the window on one occasion. My sister in law Joyce has a fear of mice, and goes all shivery just at the mention of the little rodents. She can’t even look at pictures of them without being affected. In my case it’s chickens! Can’t stand the horrible things (don’t mind eating them), but it’s when they start strutting about making those awful clucking noises that make me cringe. It goes back to when I was a young boy on my way to school and a farm hand had chopped the heads off several chickens in a field, and their headless bodies were racing around like English rugby players, I’ve never liked them since (chickens, not English rugby players, although...). Anyway to cut a long story even longer, some years ago Sandra and I took my parents to Boscobel Hall, where King Charles II hid in the oak tree to escape the Roundheads. They have a Cafeteria in the grounds, so we decided to treat my folks to lunch and as it was a lovely day we thought we would sit outside, and whilst Sandra, Mum and Dad went in to see what was on offer, and I said I would get us a table. But strutting around were some of the biggest chickens I had ever seen in my life, but I bravely secured a table as far away from the other diners as I could get, thinking ‘They’ve got food so the chickens will be around them’ - wrong- they all headed for me, and I was quickly surrounded by the little cluckers, despite shooing them, and accusing them of being born to unmarried parents, so loud were my protestations telling them to go forth and multiply that Sandra and my Mum and Dad were laughing their socks off as they could hear my cussing inside. I even prefer duck eggs to this day... I wonder if any of you have the same thoughts as me towards the many bedroom scenes depicted on the TV. Except on rare occasions, when two people have allegedly had a night of illicit passion, which you rarely see thank goodness, but what rankles me is when we see them wake up in the morning, usually the story has them late, they jump out of bed, pull their clothes on, no wash or shave, and rush off to work or wherever. So this means they are going to be wearing the same underpants or knickers which they slept in (they always seem to sleep in their undies) all day. If the female is in bed, she usually pulls the sheet up around her neck to hide her modesty, even though she has been less than modest the night before, which always seems ludicrous to me. The first thing I do in the morning is go for a pee before I do anything else. They must have super bladders as they never seem to get the urge to pass water the lucky people! As we had to get our columns in by the beginning of August, due to Nigel’s knee operation, which is going to give him a lot of post op. pain. Hopefully by the time we go to press you will be well on the way to recovery Nige’! The same applies to Janet Downing, the Conductor and Musical Director of the Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir, who is still very poorly at time of writing. The choir will have performed at Hartshill with the Lorna Spode Singers on the 26th of September just s few days ago, possibly still without her (if that is not the case I apologise). I personally will have missed the concert as I am away. I sincerely hope that both of you are in robust health as you read this. The Denstone Players will be performing two one act plays in November in the Village Hall, the first ‘A Quiet Night’ will take place on the 19th, 20th, and 21st. The other has yet to be decided at time of writing. All our regular supporters know what to expect, and anyone looking for a great night out with a lorra, lorra laughs come along, have a drink and enjoy a fun experience. T T F N Les... Down on the Farm by Angela Sargent “and now with treble soft the red breast whistles from a garden croft; and gathering swallows twitter in the skies.” From “Ode to Autumn”, Keats A nd indeed the Swallows are gathering along the wires and then swooping and chattering as they prepare to fly off to their winter quarters. I’ll try to count them again, as usual, to see how many return next year- less and less from my observations. We see lots of Goldfinches, though and they are the prettiest of garden birds with their yellow and red feathers and the ‘charm’(collective group) will flock onto a teasel and completely strip it of its seeds before moving on. The cooler weather will make the wasps begin to go drowsy and having suffered from several stings this summer, they are not my favourite right now! Wasps die off in winter, leaving just the Queen to find somewhere cosy to hibernate, ready for when it warms up. Living in an old house, we tend to come across several that are inspecting the accommodation and they like crawling on carpets, so are easy to tread on. Hopefully they haven’t pestered the Bees too much as they look for sweet things to eat, for there are lots of Blackberries and fruit about. On the moors, Heather will be flowering and Bees love this plant. It also contributes to the formation of peat, but in days gone by, it had many uses, from flavourings, to dyes to beer. It is also known as ‘ling’, from the Norse language and is regenerated by grazing with cattle or sheep or by burning. Having finished our combining- the stubble would have been burnt off at one time, killing disease and fertilising the soil, but now the straw is important to us and, after the straw bales have all been moved, we are trying to get the field work well under way, before we have to start thinking of bringing in or feeding livestock. For a change, we are growing stubble turnips for the sheep this time and, although it got attacked by flea beetle, enough has re-grown to give them something to nibble on as they get ready for this years breeding season. We’ve had the summer shows and the sheep sales will be held now, as plans for next years lamb crop begin to take shape. Ted will be around ten months old and we would expect him to be settling down to his job now and understanding what we want him to do. I must say, up to now, he is showing signs of being one of the best sheepdogs we’ve had! • 32. Karen’s Cake Corner by Karen Hill Pavlova with Lemon Chiffon Cream, Berries and Edible Flowers Along with my love for making cakes, I have always loved meringues. I have been making them for years and realised I have yet to include a recipe. Here is one of my favourites. I have made lemon cream, but you can just use whipped cream for this recipe and is equally delicious. This dessert in great as it always looks so impressive, but is so easy to make! 6 large free range egg whites 300g caster sugar 1 tsp cornflour 1 tsp white wine vinegar 500 ml double or whipping cream 100g good quality lemon curd Zest of a lemon, juice of ½ lemon, plus extra zest to serve blueberries, and edible flowers for decoration Firstly, preheat your oven to 160˚C. Prepare your baking sheet with a large square of greaseproof paper, and draw a 23” diameter circle as a guide for your meringue mix. In your blender, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Gradually whisk in the sugar, followed by the cornflour and the vinegar. Pile the mixture onto the greaseproof paper to form a circle. Bake for 1 hour, then turn the oven off and leave the meringue to cool in the oven with the door slightly open. The meringue should be crisp around the edges and the top. For the topping, whip the cream with the lemon curd, zest and juice until it forms soft peaks. Pile the cream on top of your meringue. You can serve the meringue as it is now, or add lots of fresh berries and edible flowers for decoration. There are so many variations I make of this dessert but I can never seem to make one big enough for my family. No one is ever satisfied with one slice! 32 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. Thank you for your support. Have I got news for you by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University. Winter draws on... and other music hall gags Winter draws on – as they used to say for a cheap laugh in the music halls – and you can make a date in your diary. Saturday November 7th is this year’s Uttoxeter Bonfire and Fireworks Display. We start just before seven in the evening and there are two fireworks shows – a smaller one just before the fire is lit and the main display at 7.30pm. I look forward to seeing you there. But before looking forward, I thought I should look back at a couple of events this summer which I was reminded of by the editor of The Uttoxeter and Cheadle Voice. He said: ‘I see your old mate Nicky Campbell will receive an OBE in the 2015 Birthday Honours list for his services to children.’ And he made the fair point that it is unusual and quite an honour for a journalist and TV presenter to be rewarded in this way. Nicky is the patron of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering, and I am sure that as an adopted child himself, he has thrown as much enthusiasm into that role as he does into all his professional work. He is one of the most focussed and driven individuals I have come across, which explains his success. From Radio One to number one host of the TV studio debate Not everyone could make the switch from Radio One DJ and game show host to news and current affairs presenter. Despite the showbiz background, he has presented a host of serious factual programmes and debates. With a self-confidence easily mistaken for arrogance, there are few better presenters of studio debates. He’s been known to upset a few guests and more than a few production staff. I was disappointed that he was the only former colleague who declined to be interviewed for my book on broadcast journalism. He said he didn’t like to over-analyse what he does, and I can accept that. But he’s always been very professional on air, and has the knack of being able to effortlessly repeat questions or comments suggested in his earpiece by the producer sitting in the TV gallery. His own sharp intellect combines seamlessly with the input of a trusted producer – and there have been none he trusted more than his old friend Doug Carnegie. They worked together - and so briefly did I - on what was once the most popular regional programme on British TV, Central Weekend Live. It was what Danny Baker would call a ‘nuts and sluts’ show, though often with a serious purpose. Only in the Green Room of that show would you see a Russian Orthodox Bishop chatting to a leather fetishist and a Times newspaper columnist. And that was just the production team. Sorry about that predictable joke, but that sort of crazy mix of people made life in broadcasting really interesting. The same was true of our graduation ceremony at Staffordshire University in July, always one of the highlights of the year. A Fab ending to a dramatic story Among this year’s graduates was Fabrice Muamba, the footballer who collapsed on the pitch and nearly died during an FA Cup tie between Spurs and Bolton just over three years ago. His heart stopped for 78 minutes, but amazingly after medical intervention on the pitch and a month in hospital, he recovered. Although doctors advised him to quit professional sport, he has been determined to forge a new career as a pundit and coach, with occasional celebrity appearances such as his contribution to Gareth Malone’s Children in Need choir. He has had a truly eventful life for someone not yet 30 years old. His father fled the Democratic Republic of Congo to seek political asylum in Britain, and despite arriving here aged 11, unable to speak English, Fabrice achieved 10 GCSEs and three A levels. He played for Arsenal, Birmingham, Bolton and England at under 21 level before the dramatic end to his career. While it would be unprofessional to comment on the performance of an individual student, I can safely say he was always a joy to have around, and more than a match for the banter of the other professional sportsmen and women on the specialist fast-track degree he completed. Well done, Fab. Me and Staffordshire University Graduate Fabrice Muamba, the retired Premier League footballer, who quit after his heart stopped on the pitch.

It has been a monumental task, with many organisations involved, for example World Health Organisation and the Gates Foundation. Fund raising plays a critical role to support the efforts of those doing the hard work on the ground. In Africa alone $688 million has been spent on the task - hopefully the end is now in sight. After many years of perseverance, by the end of 2012 Polio was only endemic in three countries in the world – Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The good news is that it is now one year since Nigeria last reported a case of polio and it’s a critical step on the path towards a polio-free Africa. It was only a decade ago that polio struck 12,631 people in Africa in one year – three quarters of all cases in the world. So this is cause for celebration for Rotarians, not only in Uttoxeter but all around the world. For Africa to be certified polio-free by the World Health Organization, it must go two more years without a case of polio. To do this, all children in Nigeria must continue to receive the polio vaccine, including those in hard-to-reach areas. Thanks are due to the many thousands of volunteers and health workers from Africa and around the world who have devoted countless hours to immunizing the children there, who now have the opportunity to lead healthier lives. Officially opened at 1p.m. the fun went on into the evening and with the weather being kinder than expected people were able to sit out and enjoy all the entertainment provided. ‘During the afternoon everyone enjoyed re-enactment displays from The Lincoln County Regulators who held various battles in authentic dress with a backdrop of an original looking camp. The shoot outs caused quite a stir with the sound from the guns and the storylines delighting all those fortunate enough to watch the goings on’ said the Vice Chairman of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Cllr Julie Bull. Trade and charity stands laid out their stalls on the Churchill Road Recreation Ground site. The funfair rides were free of charge and there was a new competition this year for the youngsters - a doughnut eating contest.... where the winner had to be the first to eat a doughnut without licking his/her lips. And the young winner was Owen Uzzell of Edgefield Road, Longton who won a Wrights buffet for a children’s party. The nationwide famous Wrights Pie eating competition was extremely well contended with the winner for this year being Robert Johnson of Oakamoor Road, Cheadle who wins a pie for each day of the year. A heavily contended open darts contest was won by Stuart Livesley with second going to Peter (Curly) Johnson and the semi finalists being Mark Thompson and Rick Lovatt. The Royal Ride D uncan Cowans, who has owned his hairdressing business in Cheadle since 1977, recently completed his 4th charity cycle ride to raise funds for the Dougie Mac Hospice in Barlaston. This is a cause very close to Duncan’s heart as the Hospice nurses showed great compassion while caring for his late mother, Sheila, during the last hours of her life. The Royal Ride lasted four days, starting at The Huntsman pub in Cheadle and ending at Windsor Castle via Sandringham Palace. Duncan cycled the 300 odd miles with three friends, Ian Collier, Tony Lovatt and Tony Sanders, along with two back up drivers, Alan Shenton and myself, Cecily Cowans. Ian completed the ride, raising an incredible total of nearly £1000, in memory of his late partner, Chris, whom he lost due to cancer in April. We all set off at 6.00 from Cheadle on the morning of Day1. It was a pleasant cycle ride through six counties taking just over 5 hours. Having arrived safely in Grantham we enjoyed a well-deserved pint and a meal before a very early night! Day 2 took us through Lincolnshire to Norfolk, on busier roads, ending at Sandringham. In good spirits, again we had an early night to prepare for the following day. Day 3, from Kings Lynn to Cambridge, went very well. We cycled along good roads and cycle tracks through beautiful villages and towns. We all enjoyed a meal together and, yet again, an early night to prepare for our 4th and longest day. After many miles covered on the fourth and final day, we arrived at Windsor safe and sound. Throughout the whole ride, we had only one puncture and no illnesses or injuries. The weather was fine and dry. It was all a great success and we welcome any further donations via Duncan’s just giving page. Many thanks to all our sponsors. Now to plan the next one... Teams compete for the first Fairtrade Cup A Junior football tournament has been held for the first time by Cheadle Fairtrade Group The inaugural competition for the Fairtrade Cup was organised in partnership with Staffordshire Moorlands United Football Club. Two age groups competed at the event which was held at South Moorlands Leisure Centre, Cheadle. The winners of the U8’s competition were Cheadle Town, while Audley took the top spot in the U9 category. A spokesman for Cheadle Fairtrade Group said: “We’d like to thank Ian Morton of SMUFC for the excellent way the competition was organised and Cheadle Mayor, Councillor Stephen Ellis, who is Patron of our group, for presenting the medals and cups to the winning teams. Cheadle property expert launches new lettings and property management agency T he lettings market in Cheadle has a brand new platform thanks to the exciting launch of privately owned company, DJC Lettings. With more than 25 years industry experience, property agent Deborah Coates of Cheadle is the face behind the exciting new company which has had a hugely successful start. The 46 year old, who has been working in the field for more than two decades, is now looking to match local landlords with their perfect tenants through her new residential lettings and property management business. Priding herself on offering a professional, friendly and efficient service, Deborah will be on hand seven days a week to ensure that accompanied viewing and landlord visits can be arranged at a time to suit you. “Here at DJC Lettings, we concentrate on providing the best service in a modern, efficient manner.“We pride ourselves in being able to offer advice to landlords and tenants, and we run several schemes to help facilitate the process. “Whether you are a landlord seeking responsible, quality tenants for your property or a tenant searching for a home we are here to help. Deborah’s passion for the property industry is already playing a key role in making her business a success.“The main advantage for me is that I’ve been working in property in the Cheadle area for many years and I know a lot of people locally. When people know you they feel reassured in dealing with you because you already have a level of trust. Striving to be at the forefront of the property lettings market, DJC Lettings is a forward thinking business based on traditional values which - alongside genuinely competitive rates - makes them a great option for tenants and landlords alike. Whether you are looking for a let only service or full management of your property, DJC Lettings will have a package to suit you. I would also be happy to hear from any prospective landlords thinking about purchasing an investment property who might like advice on the type of house to purchase with a buy-to-let in mind. Investing in rental property offers a great return for your money and more people seem to be looking into this as a long term investment. The “once in a lifetime” skydive gave the group the worst and best of feelings as they headed towards firm ground. All three will remember the day plus disabled and terminally ill children will benefit from fundraising as they have already raised £1,300 of their £1,500 target for leading charity Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children. Emma Watkinson, Branch Manager for Frank Innes at Uttoxeter said: “It is the most nerve-racking thing anyone could ever sign themselves up to do, but it is also the most exhilarating experience you’ll probably ever have. “Just think of all of those children and their parents who are facing adversity every day, hurling yourself out of a plane is nothing in comparison.” Newlife is the largest charity funder of specialist equipment for children with disabilities and terminal illness in the UK and has helped families by spending £13,663,468 through equipment grants for special disability equipment. Wheelchairs, walkers, beds, seating, communication aids and other equipment that help give children independence, keep them safe, relieve pain and overcome challenges. Newlife also provide Emergency Bed Loans, Play Therapy Pod loans and a vital Just Can’t Wait Service for families in need of instant help. Together we can really change the lives of children with disability and terminal illness – supporting them to experience and enjoy life and all that we take for granted. All support services can be accessed via the Newlife Nurse Helpline – 0800 902 0095 (free from UK landlines and mobiles) or email nurses@newlifecharity.co.uk. The Skydive took place at Tilstock Jump Centre in Whitchurch, Shropshire. A Tandem skydive is the easiest and most popular of all skydives. It requires only 30 minutes training before you get to jump strapped to your instructor. The BPA (British Parachute Association) qualified tandem instructor does all of the hard work for you. Keleigh Tomlinson, Newlife’s Midlands Regional Fundraising & Awareness Manager who organised the jump was full of praise for efforts of the three. “The staff at Frank Innes in Uttoxeter have worked hard to raise £1,300 to fund vital equipment for children with disabilities. Taking on the challenge of a skydive is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “All three ladies were incredibly brave and I am thrilled that they chose to jump in aid of Newlife Foundation. Thank you. “Our next Newlife Skydive Day is May 14th 2016 at Tilstock Jump Centre in Whitchurch, Shropshire.” If you fancy taking on the challenge please contact Keleigh via email: ktomlinson@newlifecharity.co.uk or call her directly on: 07973473268. T he Sun shone and there was a great attendance by villagers and those from further afield at this year’s Denstone Show held on 5th September. Entries were at near record levels for the 70 plus classes which attracted gardeners, arts and crafts devotees, cooks and photographers of all ages. Outside the village hall there were a range of stalls offering attractive craft products and music was provided by the Uttoxeter Junior Brass Band and well-known local musicians Sanj Nandi & Ann Litchfield. A big attraction was the Fun Dog Show organized by Hooligan Hounds and a wonderful display of birds of prey from Mark Titterton. Rent-a-Beast provided more hands on experience for those who like their ‘creepy crawlies’ up close and personal. Local author Caroline Wedd read from her new book ‘The Walnut Tree’ and Celine Whyte demonstrated Chinese Calligraphy. There was an excellent display of classic vehicles of all kinds at Denstone Hall Farm Shop and The Tavern was open all afternoon to slake a few thirsts. The Show raised funds for the Parish Council’s defibrillator campaign which has been well supported by both local community groups and businesses including Alton Towers, Denstone Youth Fund, The Uttoxeter Knights, The Uttoxeter Lions and the proceeds from the raffle at the Denstone Show. The Parish Council now has sufficient funds for its first defibrillator and will continue to raise funds for more. Denstone Show a great success! 39Let The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice take your business to 13,000 local homes. To advertise, call 01538 751629 or 07733 466 970.
