The CommonWealth Hosts The Only Closed Mic That's Almost Open
Source: Indivisible Integers
Dated: Dec. 18, 2013
Re-imagining the purpose and implementation of the open mic, the Closed Mic is the Glory
CommonWealth's answer to transformative art empowering communities.
ATLANTA -- Many people are familiar with open mics—open atmospheres that cater to performers of
poetry, song, monologue and instrumentalism. The Glory CommonWealth, founded January of this year,
has recreated the open mic experience with a twist. Enter: The CommonWealth Closed Mic.
Popular for its homecoming/livingroom feel, the Closed Mic humorously jests, boasting its closed-ness
while providing an vibrant outlet that is quite the opposite—and even consolation in the form of an
infinitesimal chance to perform on the microphone (even though the list is already closed). The
organization is not concerned with entertainment, but rather the separation of entertainment and the
spiritual expression of arts, much like the theory of separation of church and state never fully actualized.
Jokingly created when NGTVZRO asked Yoehzer The Gift, ‘Brother, can I get on the mic?’ and the
response was an overly staunch ‘No’, the Closed Mic is never open. Not even on business days. Many
people who enjoy the Closed Mic have difficulty getting into the venue because the doors are closed.
The Glory CommonWealth, not only concerned with upholding integrity of show, but also with its mission
of strengthening communities by utilizing the arts to unlock the potential of working together under the
principles of humanity, is concluding with its 12th coordinated community event this year—an ambitious
founding year.
“We’re looking forward to finishing the year with the same eternal commitments to our community and
message that we began with. Even though the mic is closed, I might even let some people on [the
performance list],” said NGTVZRO, Chief Creative Officer of the Glory CommonWealth in a meeting at
Hypeopatamus, a premier open source business development in the Atlanta startup community.
Che’Zee, Zano Bathroom, Thurston Lopes, Siddiq Bailey, Stephanie ‘All of A’ Sutton and Chaina Nickole
are some of the talented, independent artists slated for performance.
The Glory CommonWealth is a human development that recognizes the gap between individuals that
disallows community cohesion, empathy and camaraderie, and sets out to rectify it. The Closed Mic, and
the Glory CommonWealth’s other events, the CommonWealth Experience and Family Dinner provides
forums for intelligent conversation and lasting interaction in a diverse environment of respect, learning and
freedom of expression.
This year’s final Glory CommonWealth event will be the CommonWealth Closed Mic #CWCM on
December 31st, and will be hosted by @NGTVZRO and @YoehzerTheGift at Marlee’s Coffee and Tea,
349 Decatur St.
