Tips on Gardening for a Self-Sustainable Lifestyle: Do’s, Don’ts,
and Plenty of Underwear for Council Members…
(This is a response I’ve written to a visitor’s question on the Homesteading/Survivalism page on
Facebook.)
Carrie B. in Lexington, South Carolina writes:
“I would like to get information, please. I live in a subdivision, where livestock is not allowed. Our lot is
less than 1 acre, and I have a small area for a garden. I would like any information on self-sustainability,
while living with the bi-laws of the HOA. Thanks.”
Well, Carrie…
…for starters, I don’t get along very well with bi-laws that encroach on my liberty--although it might be
easier for some people to live with bi-lawsinstead of in-laws ;)
Anyway:
From what you said about livestock, I’m going to assume thatyou’re concerned about not being able to
grow your own sources of protein.
Where you live, in central South Carolina…
--you should be able to grow protein-rich plants like garbanzo beans/chickpeas, spinach, sorghum
andpeanuts.
2. (You can watch the slideshow here.)
You also might be able to grow quinoa and lentils, but I’m not sure if they can handle the climate.
Research those plants and go from there.
Caution!
The city “officials” might wet their pants, though, if you grow sorghum, because it gets very tall when it
reaches its full height.
In my experience with city councils…
…I’ve noticed their members seem to be unable to keep from soiling their pantsif you grow or build
anythinghigher than they can stand;
So,be prepared to offer them lots of fresh underwear :D
3. But seriously, Carrie, take advantage of your growing space and grow as many protein-rich plants as you
can, since you’re not allowed to raise any livestock.
But…
Make sure you aren’t going to wind up deficient. To be truly self-sufficient, you’ll have to research and
experiment with growing a variety of plants to ensure you’re getting a properly balanced, well-rounded
supply of food.

Carrie and her husband run a photography studio in Lexington.
If I were in a similar position, I would do everything I could to relocate:
—get out of town, into the countryside, where I could freely be as self-sustainable as I wanted to.
In fact, that’s exactly what I AM going to do.
And, thanks to Empower Network, I’m going to make it happen in a matter of months, NOT
decades.
…Like Dakota McLearn did: (Watch the video here.)
4. He empowered himself to make his wildest dreams come true…just like over 73,000 other
people have.
…And you can too!
That’s my vision for YOU: to empower yourself with financial leverage, so you can take your
preparedness to a whole new level.
You know you want it…
…so get started now!
