The figure shows the influence of the different elements
in the definition of a person.
I've split these elements into personal ones and external
ones.
The personal ones are both native (gender, sexuality,
nationality, physicality) and acquired (behavior, social
status, objects); the external ones are related to the
context and the other people.
Every element can be subject to various stereotypes; thus
every person is not defined by a single one.
The action of stereotyping can be both aware or
unconscious, such as active and subjective or passive. In
fact everyone of us, starting from childhood, identifies
himself in various categories one after the other and this
is called self-stereotyping.
When this is a conscious action, a person can act or use
some objects as tools in order to follow a stereotype and
pursue his aim.
This is the reason why the concept of copy is fundamental: the real life or media reproduction of an aesthetic or
behavioral aspect leads up to the spreading and the
strengthening of the stereotype itself.
Analyzing myself, I was pretty surprised by the amount of
stereotypes I apply in my daily life to judge other people
and situations.
Then I tried to imagine what kind of stereotypes defines
me; there are a lot of role I fit in, from the blonde girl to
the geek one. But the stereotype that often persecutes me
is the “mum” one, according to my friends. Probably my
curvy physicality and my protective behavior recall to
them the mother archetype.
