How to Buy and Install Home Security Cameras that Connect to the Internet
1. How to Buy and Install Home Security Cameras that
Connect to the Internet
Wires are now things of the past.
Back in the day, home security cameras were so expensive and
difficult to install that only the affluent families can take advantage
of its features. But ever since the arrival of the internet age and
the omnipresence of affordable and ingenuous cameras, most
people can now set up their own system. Our present technology
allows some home security cameras to transmit video or pictures
to a computer wherever we are in the planet, through the internet.
If you’re considering this project, there are some important legal
considerations you should be aware off before you install security
cameras in your home. Follow the steps below to find and install a
device that offers the features that meet your needs. Don’t worry.
The process is simple and straightforward.
Steps
1
Look for a camera that is capable of connecting to the Internet,
such as those from SmartHome Solutions.
2
Verify which software, if there’s any, is needed to feed videos or
pictures online.
2. 3
Ask or, better yet, research if the particular home security camera
can send videos or just still images and determine if these
features are important to you.
4
Inquire if videos or pictures can be sent from the camera to only a
single computer or if they can be transmitted or sent to other
computers. Figure out if the camera can be linked with existing
home alarm systems or home surveillance cameras.
5
Note that some security cameras are sold separately from its
software while some can be bought as a package.*
*Older cameras are capable of transmitting to a central computer
situated within wiring distance. These particular cameras won’t be
able to transmit images over the Internet. In this case, you need
to purchase and install special software to email the photos or
video to a pre assigned email address where you then fetch
photos or videos from. These security cameras are not actually
connected online.
6
After purchasing a camera, boot up your computer and insert the
installer that it came with. Follow the instructions on the screen to
have the software installed.
3. 7
Position your security camera on the area you want to secure. In
most cases, cameras will need mounting bolts or screws to
secure them. However, you may use adhesive strips to attach
them to a smooth wall, or flat surface.
8
Plug the camera to an electrical outlet or other indicated sources
of power. Some cameras run on rechargeable batteries while
some run on solar power. Solar powered cameras need to be set
in an area where you can get enough and consistent sunlight.
9
Link your camera with the wireless video transmitter that comes
with the kit. Note that some cameras can wirelessly transmit video
readily.
10
Using a USB port, link the receiver to your computer. By now, you
can now view what the camera transmits to your computer.
11
As an added feature, you can download mobile security software
that will allow you to view your video feed using a smart phone, or
PDA, as well as control your home alarm system.*
*Alarm systems for home can be configured and renamed along
with the cameras. Give them simple names such as “Garage” or
“Porch.
