2. One Direction – Kiss You
"Kiss You" is a song by English-
Irish boy band One Direction. It
has been released from their
second studio album, Take Me
Home (2012). It was released by
Sony Music Entertainment on 7
January 2013, as the second
single from the album in the
United States and third
elsewhere. Composed by
Kristoffer Fogelmark, Kristian
Lundin, Albin Nedler, Savan
Kotecha, Shellback, Carl Falk
and Rami Yacoub. This track is
an uptempo, upbeat power pop
song which features electronic
effects and an abrasive hook.
The lyrical content revolves
around the protagonist's
3. Narrative Aspects
Whilst the Kiss You video is strongly a
performance based video, there are
elements of narrative. The narrative isn’t
clear and is mixed throughout. As a
whole, a lot of the narrative is based on
being filmed, in which they show a
camera crew filming them and show that
they are not actually driving etc. by
showing the set up background and
props. This adds comedy affects to their
upbeat song, and is also an individual
aspect which isn’t commonly seen. In the
video there are also week narrative points
of driving to a location in a car and on a
motorcycle. Suggesting they are going
somewhere, potentially to see the person
the song is aimed at – the one whom they
want to kiss. Furthermore, scenes from
this show the band in a prison like
location, wearing a stereotypical striped
prison uniform. This suggests they cannot
get to the girl they are singing about and
are ‘locked up’ away from her.
4. Performance Aspects
Throughout this video, the
band members are miming the
words creating a performance
alongside the narrative
aspects. Miming gives the
audience the feel of the band
singing to them within the
video, and has a direct affect.
The way One Direction have
mimed throughout whilst acting
out scenes has created a
unique affect on performance.
Commonly, music videos
include shots of the band
performing in front of an
audience with instruments, by
not doing this, One Direction
have made their video
individual to other bands.
5. Genre Conventions
Pop music videos are usually highly performance based,
with the singer, or band lip syncing throughout the song, as
well as performing via dancing or in a narrative story that
reflects the meaning of the lyrics. The overall tone and hue
of the video will be very bright, with the artist wearing bright
trendy mainstream clothing. One Direction have met this
convention throughout. The video itself has a ‘bright’
appearance with no dull scenes. Also, the band are
wearing the latest trend. This attracts an audience who are
high on trend and fashion allowing them to relate to the
band. In pop music videos the main artists are almost
always present in their music video in some shape of form.
One Direction have also met this convention as they are
present throughout. This makes it clear to the audience
who the band are and further helps to advertise them as a
band. It is also common for them to appeal to a younger
audience. One Direction have done this by the use of
comical dancing, scenes wearing armbands with a lot of
humour. Therefore One Direction have met the pop genre
convention throughout. This makes it clear to any
audience what genre of music they are.
6. Lyrics and Visuals
Within the video there are key links between the lyrics
and visuals which link the video with the music. ‘I just
wanna take you’ it quoted at the start of the song, this is
then linked with the image of a band member driving a
band member. This links the idea of him taking the
person away on his motorcycle. Also, when they sing
‘Every time we touch’, one band member then places
his hands on another boys chest. This also creates
humour suggesting the other band member has breasts
and he wants to touch them which attracts their young
audience. When they sing, ‘Baby’, one band member
uses his arms to represent holding a baby. This is a play
on words as the song is calling a female baby as a form
of pet name, whereas they are acting out a child. This
creates humour also. Furthermore, when the band sing
‘Chinny chin chin’, one member uses his hands to hold
his chin. This emphasises the lyrics as the action links
to what he is singing. Also, his light hearted and comical
behaviour continues the idea of having fun and joking
with his friends. Finally, at the end of the song when
they sing ‘Let me kiss you’, one band member jumps to
kiss the member singing the lyrics, as well as one
blowing a kiss to the camera. As the lyrics are the title of
the song, by ending the song with these and linking the
7. How will this help my video?
One Direction – Kiss you has influenced what I hope
to achieve in my music video. With this being a
similar genre, the conventions met in this video I
would like to carry onto mine. Aspects such as
filming in a car adds a unique appeal to the video as
apposed to walking through the streets. Also the
humour aspect of the video is also appealing to the
audience of a younger generation – which is also
my audience. By doing this, my video will attract my
target audience. I also aim to strongly link my lyrics
a visuals, which has also been done within ‘Kiss
you’. I hope that my video will be as successful as
this at achieving the correct conventions.
