More on The
Info-Age
This eBook is about The Information Age, it will
provide you with a substantial amount of
information then will test how much of it you have
learnt and now know.
I will go into detail about how the Information Age
has created a Digital Divide, what it is and why it
has been created.
Online services will also be discussed, in terms of
how they have developed, what they are and
examples of it.

Internet is a network
of computer networks
and computers using
unique IP addressed
and TCP/IP protocol.
LAN- Local Area
Network
WAN- Wide Area
Network
MAN- Metropolitan
Area Network
Wireless networking-
This is when you are
able to connect to the
internet without using
wires, examples of this
is connecting to Wi-Fi
through a smartphone.
The Information Age is
simply how the world
has changed after the
internet was invented.
The term uses the
same idea as The
Industrial Age.
What is a modem?
What is a hot spot and
how does it work?
What are protocols?
How do different
devices connect to the
internet?
What has made
the use of internet
increase?

A modem is a device or program that enables a
computer to transmit data over, for example,
telephone or cable lines.
Start Online Services The Information Age The Digital Divide Conclusion
ICT allows us to send and receive information quickly, (such as through email and fax), it
also allows us to store information in different ways, e.g. via USB, ROM, External ROM. ICT
has allowed us to have more leisure options, as multimedia was created, so people can
now watch videos, view text, view images, we now also have digital televisions well as
music.
We can present
information in
different ways, such
as this eBook!
Our presentations can now include; graphics, colour, imaginative
text styles, data presented on graphs and charts, as well as colour.
So in the end it is all content rich, and has a professional
appearance.
ICT has also changed the way that we
work, as some jobs that were done
by human labour are now done by
machinery, for example there are no
longer many people working in a
factory except for the supervisor, and
maybe someone working on a
particular object that cannot be done
by a machine yet.
People are
complaining
about how they
are losing their
jobs to
machines,
because its
cheaper for the
companies
Nothing has to be done manually
anymore, such as writing out a lot of
work, with drawings then waiting to
send it off, it can now be sent off by
email as a PDF, which saves a lot of
time, as postage can take days
Start Online Services The Information Age The Digital Divide Conclusion
Different ways of
communicating have
developed, such as
email, blogs, chat
rooms, groups and
forums.
Microchips, which is what runs computers and ICT
devices, are getting smaller and smaller, meaning
stationary computer systems that were deskbound are
now mobile. Batteries are also being developed to last
longer and with more of a capacity, and devices are
being made from plastics and super light metals.
Shopping
banking and
learning has
advanced due to
ICT, the amount
of people that
shop online has
increased
drastically, as it is
cheaper and
saves time.
Because the internet is so
quickly moving it is important
to have certain rules, otherwise
known as rights or laws, for
example the Copyright and
Patents Act (1988), The
Computer Misuse Act (1990),
Data Protection Act (1998).
It is important for us to keep our knowledge up to date with all
of the different technology coming out on a day to day basis, this
is important as we need to be able to participate in work and
daily life with this new technology.
ICT has created a self service environment,
such as machines where you scan your own
items and pay for it yourself. Some petrol
stations also allow it, so it is not just
supermarkets.
Start Online Services The Information Age The Digital Divide Conclusion
There are many different types of Online Service, however there are not many different web
browsers, this is because the main web browsers are already established companies, and most
users do not want to move away from the norm, as well as that the companies, such as Google,
Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Mozilla Firefox have already made their browsers as
well as possible, so people believe that they cannot be beaten.
Due to a massive increase of online services,
ecommerce was created. Ecommerce is
where you are able to purchase what you
want online, this involves anything from,
food, cars, clothing and so much more.
Some online services are weather viewers, news
viewers, email providers entertainment
providers, e-health sites and e-government sites
People used to have to go to their music
store to purchase a vinyl disk or cd, to listen
to music, as there was no other way of
getting music on demand, as even the radio
is not on demand as there is a deejay that
plays what they want
ICT has allowed people to work from home either
when ill or just all the time, as they can just email
it to the company that they are working for. This
blurs the line between work and home, which
could be considered good for the business, but
potentially bad for the employee.
Start Online Services The Information Age The Digital Divide Conclusion
The information age has changed many different
aspects of peoples life's.
Legislation
Public General Acts is available
online, in the same format when
passed by UK Parliament. This
gives people the power to taken
action if they want to, also it gives
them the access to information .
Crime
There is now cyber
crime, fraud, thieves,
viruses, hackers, and
identity theft.
Employment
Companies now require multi-
functional staff, how can do their job
and do it with new technologies, as
well as there being many roles that
require specialist ICT skills;
hardware/software engineers, network
administrators, and web designers.
Decisions
Artificial intelligence
has developed well,
and computers are
able to make
decisions when
multiple choice is
available. They are
also to play certain
complex games such
as chess.
Communication
It has accelerated a
lot in the last few
years, now there are
mobile phones,
email, text
messages, video
conferencing and
much more. This will
keep on developing
rapidly as time goes
on.
Education
We have moved from ‘talk and chalk’ to
interactive whiteboards, enabling the
teacher to present using multimedia, it
also allows students to interact, making
the learning environment more beneficial
and efficient, as we have videos, graphics,
animations and text.
Start Online Services The Information Age The Digital Divide Conclusion
A Multimedia System is a system capable of processing multimedia data
and applications.
It has four basic characteristics: It must be controlled by a computer. They
are integrated. All information must be displayed digitally. The interface
used is an interactive one
World Wide Web
Hypermedia
courseware
Video conferencing
Video-on-demand
Interactive TV
Groupware
Home shopping
Games
Virtual reality
Digital video editing
and production
systems
Multimedia
Database systems
Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation,
video, or interactivity content forms. They are good for communicating as
they are interesting for the audience and are a lot easier to understand as
they use diagrams and pictures, which are more meaningful than text,
making the information a lot easier to remember

The effects of digital T.V
Learning- it has made people learn facts, that they
didn't know before, and has allowed people to
extend their learning in different areas.
Leisure time- now majority of the time people
relax by watching television or eat in front of it.
Viewing habits- viewing habits are frequent, as
95% of household have TV's in the UK
Global knowledge. Low quality/high priced
internet connections/PCs, not technical help,
speaking a minority language as your mother
tongue, are all things that contribute to it.
Worldwide there is a digital divide, but it is not as
much as it would have been 5 years ago, due to
third world countries now have more computer
systems, generally the divide is between young
and old, and poor and rich. A factor that affects
the digital divide is the slow internet, as even if
people causing the digital divide do get certain
systems they will not want them as coverage in
the UK is very poor at the moment, it should be
improved by 2015. To bridge the gap, ICT is being
put into places that didn’t have it before, forcing
people to learn it, such as work, and school.
People do not want to buy new technology because
they know that within 6 months of purchasing it, it
will be out of date as there will be more technology
that is better than it, making them have customer
dissatisfaction. Some people believe that ICT is for:
The young
The brainy
Middle class citizens, therefore they don’t try.
Many people have a fear of technology as they do
not know how to use it, they also have a fear that
others will laugh at their attempts, or they have
read negative reports about IT such as theft fraud
etc. which has exacerbated their fears. Others do
not see IT as something they should spend time
learning, so they don’t try, and if they use a slow
system or connection then they will believe it.

Social – disadvantage to those not skilled, those without
access to Internet.
Legal - Recent legislation. Digital rights management (DRM).
Technical – skills fade, outdated staff, keeping up with
developments, training.
Ethical – tracking Internet use, mobile numbers (area of base
station tracking of location), Phorm (tracks browsing habits,
uses data to target adverts).
Economic – business need to keep up to date with training,
cost implications. E-commerce.
Environmental – mobile phone masts, ICT related CO², but
reduction in travel due to video conferencing, reduction in
use of paper, intelligent heating systems.

Start Online Services The Information Age The Digital Divide Conclusion
Entertainment has advanced through ICT such as,
portable speakers/bluetooth wireless speakers,
cinemas, television and radio, without ICT these
would be impossible.
Internet banking was made to allow
customers to not be inconvenienced by
having to go to the bank when they could
just stay at home or wherever they were and
complete transactions via PC or smartphone
ICT has created so many different
opportunities, such as gaming smart
televisions and so much more.
Start Online Services The Information Age The Digital Divide Conclusion
We are unable to speed up or slow down the closing of the digital divide, unless a billionaire
buys computers for everyone in 3rd world countries, and ensures that the older generations
uses them. As the population increases the gap will lessen this is because there will be people
born with computers around, so it will be normal to them, whereas the older generation were
not born with them, so it is foreign. We are unable to know what the future holds for
technology and ICT, but it very easy to have an idea, it will be very intense, many believe that
there will be flying cars, chips etc.
Here is a case study showing that ICT is being brought into 3rd
world countries, in terms of education.
Multimedia- Images, Video, Audio, Text. This is being used more in education, advertising and
entertainment.
Broadband- Broadband is the name given to any fast, permanent internet connection. It can be
delivered by cable, satellite, mobile, fibre optics and ADSL (the most popular way).
Wireless- A way of connecting to the internet without using wires or leads, usually through Wi-Fi
or a hotspot.
Digital TV- Digital television (DTV) is the transmission of television signals using digital rather
than conventional analog methods.
Superhighway- An extensive electronic network such as the Internet, used for the rapid transfer
of information such as sound, video, and graphics in digital form.
URL- is a specialization of URI that defines the network location of a specific resource. Unlike a
URN, the URL defines how the resource can be obtained. We use URLs every day in the form of
http:sun.com, etc. But a URL doesn't have to be an HTTP URL.
URI- identifies a resource either by location, or a name, or both. More often than not, most of
us use URIs that defines a location to a resource. The fact that a URI can identify a resources by
both name and location has lead to a lot of the confusion in my opinion. A URI has two
specializations known as URL and URN.
Backbone – Core link of high speed connections Eg: National, Europe plus, central & south
America, North America and Far East/Pacific
