In 2012 we saw major upgrades on campus, including
an overhaul of the Dining Commons, significant
improvements in the music building, the resurrection of
Quincer as a residence hall, the construction of a new
Faculty Office Building and many other improvements.
But more significantly, we have experienced an
increasing vibrancy of the spiritual atmosphere on
campus as well as increased rigor of the academic
experience for our students. We are also delighted with
the continued growth of enrollment and a significant
increase in on-campus residency rates for our
undergrad students.
All four of our divisions – the traditional undergraduate
division, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary,
Professional & Graduate Studies and CURadio – have
experienced substantial growth this year. I am deeply
indebted to the outstanding team that God has
given me to work with, and they deserve much of
the credit for this banner year. I am thankful as well
for an outstanding Board of Trustees, which guards
the policies and fiscal integrity of the university while
helping to advance our identity, mission and vision.
As our mission and vision statements remind us, we
continue to be intentional about making Cornerstone
University a Christ-centered, student-focused learning
environment in order to develop wise and worshipping
followers of Christ who are able to distinguish
themselves in their callings and careers so that they
can influence the cultures of our world for Christ. Our
entire community embraces this important outcome,
and all that we do on campus focuses on accomplishing
this goal for the glory of Christ. More than wanting to
become a great university, we want to graduate great
people who can be effective in their communities and
churches for Christ and His Kingdom.
Thank you for the part that you play in making all of
this possible. Your prayers, financial support, entrusting
us with your children and all the other ways that you
bless and encourage us is deeply appreciated. If you
have any questions about what you find in this report,
please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me or one of
my colleagues.
All the best,
Joe Stowell, President
it is with great joy and a deep sense of gratitude that I share this annual report with you. Not only is
your interest in Cornerstone University and partnership with us a personal encouragement to me, but it has also
enabled us to bring an outstanding report to you regarding what has happened over the past year. As you read
the stories and review the graphs and charts in this 2012 Annual Report, I trust that you will rejoice with us in the
wonderful way that God continues to bless Cornerstone University. This report is our way of being accountable to
you and to demonstrate the return on investment that will be added to your account in heaven (Phil. 4:17).

God blesses His people through spiritual gifts whether
we recognize them or not. CU has also been thoroughly
blessed over the year by its’ gifts – thanks to God’s
unending love for His people and inspiring those who
gave, prayed, and ultimately believed in Cornerstone
University.
From opening its’ doors in 1941, Cornerstone University
has seen a variety of gifts come to this campus, including
expanding the overall geographical footprint of the
University, the construction of residence halls, dining
commons, athletic facilities, and classrooms; along with
many renovations to those buildings. Physically, those
changes have influenced Cornerstone University but the
people God brought to CU through these changes have
inspired this campus to what it is today. The Cornerstone
University baseball program has seen God work in this
way throughout their project.
Head baseball coach, David Mitroff, cannot emphasize
enough the work God has done in bringing players to CU
through the building of the baseball stadium. “I don’t just
want to invest in players’ athletic abilities while they are
here,” said Mitroff. “I want to invest in their character and
spiritual growth.”
Coach Mitroff has recruited players locally, nationally, and
internationally that will contribute on the field but, more
importantly, off the field.
"When I first started receiving information from colleges
in the mail my junior year,” said freshman Zach Bohl.
“Cornerstone was the only non-baseball university whose
mail I kept. Even though it didn't initially have baseball,
Cornerstone was always in the back of my mind because I
knew it was such an amazing school. When I heard about
Jack DeWitt's donation and the beginning of a baseball
team, I knew it was a sign. I thank my Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ every night before I go to bed for giving
me the chance to go to Cornerstone. I love the Christian
atmosphere on campus, the quality education, the
close-knit community, and the opportunity to be on the
inaugural baseball team and start the program off on the
right foot. I can't wait to put on that CU uniform!"
Dr. Stowell, Coach Mitroff, and many donors had a vision
for Cornerstone University – their vision was in God’s plan.
Throughout the recruiting process, Coach Mitroff was
able to reach out to individuals from across the globe
that would help weave the team that Mitroff envisioned
for CU. It’s not only finding players that would impact the
campus, but also ones that would help their teammates
become closer to God.
When asked about choosing Cornerstone, Cullen
Montgomery said, "I chose Cornerstone for several
reasons”, said the incoming pitcher. “The first, being
that I felt God leading me to come here. I see a growing
momentum with this school within the faculty, staff, and
students that is exciting to be around. I have been able to
see strong Christian values acted out and practiced in a
day-to-day environment. In my short visit, I saw a passion
for God and ministry that I haven't found anywhere else.
I see a school that has its collective priorities in line with
how life should be. Cornerstone is an amazing place filled
with Godly people, doing His work, learning and working
hard in the classroom, and competing in the arena of
sports with the aim of doing everything to glorify our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
The Cornerstone University baseball program is just one
of the many examples of how God uses a variety of ways
to reach people for Christ. May God bless the baseball
team this season and that they will continue to have an
impact in our world for Christ on and off the field.
Providing a platform to reach individuals for christ can come in many different forms. Building the
Cornerstone University baseball stadium is doing just that. But it's more than just baseball; it's about impacting the
world for Christ through His gifts.

Huber, Dean of Student Engagement, was led by the Lord
to come to Cornerstone University in 2009. He currently
works with students to enhance their time at CU and,
more importantly, their walk with Christ. “Before coming to
Cornerstone,” said Huber, “I already had a passion for global
engagement. I wanted to bring that here.”
On prior trips to Zambia, Huber saw, first-hand, the massive
effects Malaria has on the African population. “Malaria is
the No. 1 taker of life in sub-Saharan Africa and obviously a
huge concern for those who live in this part of the world.”
Bed nets are a cost-effective way to prevent people from
contracting malaria. Aside from expensive and scarce
medical services, Huber could make a realistic difference
but he needed some help.
The Cornerstone University men’s soccer team became
the vehicle for Chip’s mission. “There was no group on
campus that people expected to do less when it came to
service and missions work. Yet this was the group that most
immediately accepted me and my family at Cornerstone
University; the men’s soccer coach became one of my
best friends and the players were often my lunch table
companions.” [Pg. 190]
Throughout Huber’s beginning years at CU, he has
expanded his vision into a campus-wide event. In 2010,
Huber thought, “What if we charged a $6 admission
to a men’s soccer game that would purchase one bed
net?” This idea became concrete as they raised enough
money to purchase 500 nets for families in Zambia. The
following year his efforts were more than doubled when
they raised enough for 1,100 nets. This has remained an
annual fundraiser entitled, ‘Night of Nets’ where he raises
money through men’s and women’s soccer games and,
forthcoming, a women’s volleyball game to purchase bed
nets for families in Africa. Huber has seen his very own
passion lived out through student after student. “Soccer
connects their passion with our greater global passion,”
said Huber.
Chip Huber has gotten the opportunity to take some of
the students to Africa and show them the impact they
have on a village in Zambia. “Getting involved with night
of nets and having the opportunity to travel to Zambia
has been unparalleled to any experience I have had in my
life. I have personally seen parents who have lost children
due to a preventable disease. It has been amazing to
see what God has done at Cornerstone and in my own
life through something so simple. The impact of giving
a family a mosquito net that will potentially save their
lives is something I will never forget. Because of this, it
doesn't matter if we raise six dollars or 50,000 dollars, it is
absolutely worth it.” – Isaac Grotenhuis (Senior)
Chip Huber recently published a book entitled, The Zambia
Project: The Story of Two Worlds Flipped Upside Down. This
book shares a story about what a group of students could
do to help bring transformation to an African village and
their experience throughout the process.
“Simply put, I just can’t stay away...I can’t stay away
because of the moment I will experience as we drive down
a rough and dusty dirt path to my little village that I call a
second home. It is the moment when a mother weeps when
handed the mesh net that will save her child’s life. It is the
moment when I am all at once overwhelmed with grief, with
joy, with compassion, with deep concern, and with hope.
It is the moment when I am perhaps most fully alive as I
experience the vast breadth of human emotions in my heart
and mind.” [Pg. 193]
chip huber brought more to cornerstone university than just his background of working closely
with students – he also brought was his passion for global needs.

Becoming a Global Influence
One student who participated in a recent China experience
articulated his personal and purposeful plan to be a Kingdom
influence through business as a result of this immersion
experience as follows:
“A clear learning point in the Global Experience was to see
that a blend of ministry and business activity is needed. I must
do my job and run my business in a way that is profitable,
sustainable and in a way that increases shareholder value. Dr.
Simpson notes in our opening meeting that the blend of these
things is part of what makes up the transformational model.
The business community is the bridge that links people to
the church. We must be able to have a platform in business,
however. That requires us to do our work with excellence,
build relationships with the people we work with, ensure that
our customers are finding value, and then be alert to how God
is working around us that we might be used by Him.”
He continued: “I will pray daily for opportunities to continue
to build redemptive relationships, to share my faith, to engage
with coworkers in bible studies, and seek to be a transforming
influence.”
In January, Skot Welch (CU Board Member) and Dr. Robert
Simpson, associate provost, led a Global Immersion
Experience to South Africa. The 18 business leaders on
the trip were able to learn about societal transformation
through Christian companies with world class global business
practices. During the visit the group had interaction with
transformative leaders from global companies like the Louis
Group, Bosasa and Amway South Africa.
At the Louis Group, Michael Louis shared how the Louis
family has consistently applied the principles of Christian and
family values upon which all their entrepreneurial interests are
founded. The family's relationship-minded and solution-driven
approach has led to the extension of the Group's interests
to property, financial services, technology, hotel ownership
and management, table grape and wine farming, and venture
capital.
The leaders at Bosasa expressed that they are about
transformation of lives. Every day, every function, every
activity is geared to making a difference. Every member
of staff is chosen for having the ability to act with higher
Kingdom motivations. The business leaders from the US had
a chance to visit one of the correctional centers where they
heard about and witnessed transformation in the lives of the
young men. The company is quick to point out that while they
are a successful company, capitalism is not only about material
things, it is about how it can be and is used to transform lives.
In Soweto (outside Johannesburg) participants observe the
transformation of community through the Amway South
Africa model. Local residents are empowered and there is
an awakening of the entrepreneurial spirit. Soweto, which
was once suppressed by apartheid in South Africa, is now
seeing economic growth. Amway is part of this economic
empowerment.
“Those individuals who are serious about seeing God working
globally should participate in a Transformational Global
Experience,” Dr. Robert Simpson.
are you ready to participate in a "Global Immersion Experience" designed to give you exposure to various models of
societal transformation? Each of the experiences to China, Czech Republic, South Africa and Israel are designed to equip and
empower leaders to integrate their faith and calling, to be culturally intelligent, and to be a Christian influence through their work
in transforming societies. They allow students to see how education, economics, spiritual and social elements can all be part of
social and spiritual transformation.

We design all of our academic programs with an eye
toward instilling six qualities that are essential for
effective Christian cultural influence:
• Spiritual maturity
• Critical thinking
• Creativity
• Professional skill
• Cross-cultural agility
• Emotional health
Achieving these vital qualities in our students requires
relevant and rigorous academic programs. That’s why
we have in place a task force on Academic Rigor that
ensures a high level of academic rigor and consistency
in academic rigor across our academic programs. We
also include in every course syllabus a “Statement of
Academic Expectations” at Cornerstone University,
which emphasizes the importance of significant student
effort both inside and outside of class.
As provost, I am proud of the fact that our incoming
students rank above those in our peer group in their
ACT scores, yet our university’s overall grade point
average is below that of our peer group.
Starbucks may do a lot of things well; but if it doesn’t
brew a great cup of coffee, none of those other
things matter. As a university, among all of our other
functions, our basic commitment is to quality academic
programs. Doing so not only fulfills our calling to love
God with our minds, but it provides our students with
the education they need to change their world for
Christ.
Dr. Rick Ostrander (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame),
Cornerstone University Provost and author of Why
College Matters to God
At Cornerstone university, academic excellence is central because developing our minds is one
important way that we glorify God and show our love for Him. In addition to that, academic excellence enables us
to fulfill our mission of preparing students to influence the world for Christ.

The global financial crises, which began in 2008,
underscored the importance for businesses, including
higher education institutions, to have sufficient cash
reserves. We have worked hard over the past few years
to set aside operational funds to provide sufficient
flexibility when the unexpected happens. This year we
were able to add approximately $1,000,000 towards
increasing our cash reserves.
Cornerstone University has also made significant gains
increasing our revenue. This was achieved through
two main areas. First, in fiscal year 2012, financial
contributions to the University increased significantly.
We received approximately $7,200,000 in temporarily
restricted gifts, many of these being given for our new
baseball and residence hall project and a future chapel
project. Second, our operational revenue generated
primarily from tuition, room, and board increased
approximately 15% due to higher enrollment and
retention levels in our traditional and adult programs.
As these revenue levels increase, it is important to
control and monitor expenses of the University. As
revenue grew 15%, our expenses grew 13%. Monitoring
actual results to budgeted expectations is a regular
practice at Cornerstone University to ensure that
expenses are managed appropriately.
We stand committed to continue building on the
current financial strength of Cornerstone University.
We sense daily God’s rich blessings and provision for
the work that we are doing in and through Him. We are
grateful for the opportunity to serve Him as we seek to
fulfill the vision of Cornerstone University: To create a
thriving community of fully devoted followers of Jesus
in a spiritually contagious, academically excellent, richly
resourced, and culturally diverse learning environment
that attracts outstanding students, faculty, and staff
who influence our world for Christ, His Church and His
Kingdom.
Nancy Schoonmaker,
Chief Financial Officer
At Cornerstone university we are keenly aware that having a strong financial base will allow us to
effectively carry out our mission and achieve our vision. I am happy to report that Cornerstone has continued to
build this strong financial base over this past fiscal year ending May 31, 2012. There are many facets to building
financial strength and stability. At Cornerstone, we have focused on three specific areas over the last several years:
liquidity, revenue growth and expense monitoring.

No one could have seen God's generous gifts that
He would direct our way over the past 12 months.
Dr. Stowell likes to refer to these God-sized gifts as
signature miracles, events that are given to drive us
to our knees to thank the One from whom all our
gifts originate. These happenings are beyond human
explanation therefore we must be grateful to God for
their origin. As you have looked over this beautiful piece
you have undoubtedly seen the fiscal strength God with
which has blessed Cornerstone University.
The outcome of our strategies is primarily to build
inspired women and men to flourish in the culture God
has placed them to bring about the transformation He
desires. Every May we graduate classes to accomplish
this purpose and your generosity makes that happen.
We are grateful those classes are growing.
In the Advancement realm we are drawn to growing
numbers but our best work is done in the stories behind
the numbers. This report is the 30th
done while Brian
Jackson has been employed here at CU. Over the years
Brian has seen his role adapt, change, morph and get
weird more times than he cares to remember. Through
it all Brian has served Christ well in steadfastly creating
opportunities to meet with people and provide avenues
for generosity. Brian does this because of the impact
CU and GRTS has had on his own life. His beautiful wife
Kathy was met in class here. His children practically
grew up on campus and while one has graduated,
one remains. He has worked for managers, directors,
vice presidents and presidents. He has seen President
Bush on this campus and has prayed with students
in their struggles. Through it all he has maintained a
great attitude and dependence on God to bring about
supernatural results.
His story is indicative of the exceptional work done by
our alumni and is a direct result of your giving. Without
the excellent students who enter here or the gifts given
by our friends we would not be in the position we are in
today. Thank you once again for generously sharing in
the resources God has directed to you and your family.
Bill Knott
Vice President for Advancement
our annual report is a once a year celebration of the financial performance of Cornerstone
University and is primarily read by meticulous minded friends who want to be inspired by the metrics that financial
performance provides. Thank you for joining with us in this celebration. I trust the information you have found in
this document is an encouragement to you.

35 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report
The Bible is a constant reminder of how God wants
us to reach out to those who haven’t heard His Word,
whether it’s through the outlet of providing bed nets
for children in Zambia, communicating His truths to
citizens of various countries on a global immersion trip,
or building a baseball stadium that serves as more than
just a physical presence on campus.
God continues to bless Cornerstone University by
providing us with the resources to reach out. We strive
to impact those globally, within our own country and
state, and, most importantly, on our campus. We thank
you for your faithful giving to Cornerstone University
as you continue to support our mission of empowering
men and women to excel as influencers in the world for
Christ. Through prayer or financial giving, Cornerstone
University is seeing the Lord’s work being done on
campus and throughout the world.
Thank you for your prayers and gifts in support of
Cornerstone University. Our students are the direct
beneficiaries of all the gifts we receive.
Paul A. Hageman
Student Fund Coordinator
Jesus spent much of his time here on earth with people viewed as unpopular or less-fortunate; from
the tax collectors, to the lepers, to the poor – He set the example of how we should minister to others.
Letter From CU Student
Fund Coordinator

Cornerstone this year! Their generosity has a huge
impact on our campus, and we [students] are
so thankful for them! We really appreciate their
willingness to let God work through them in this way
and passing on such a blessing to us students.”
– Stacy Lewis (Sophomore)
"Thank you to all who have donated their gifts to the Cornerstone
Student Fund. As a student who currently attends Cornerstone,
it means a lot because your donations directly impact myself and
my fellow classmates! Also, Cornerstone is at the place where it is
today because of you! Thanks again!
– Sarah Kubanek (Sophomore)
"The Kern Scholars Program has been a great blessing in my life. My
wife and I were committed to remaining debt-free throughout our
Seminary education even though it was going to take us many years to
work our way through. The Kern Scholars Program has made it possible
for me to attend school full-time, being equipped for the work that God
has called me to do and to remain debt free. My deepest thanks go to
the Kern Family Foundation for making this possible."

  • 5. 5 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report In 2012 we saw major upgrades on campus, including an overhaul of the Dining Commons, significant improvements in the music building, the resurrection of Quincer as a residence hall, the construction of a new Faculty Office Building and many other improvements. But more significantly, we have experienced an increasing vibrancy of the spiritual atmosphere on campus as well as increased rigor of the academic experience for our students. We are also delighted with the continued growth of enrollment and a significant increase in on-campus residency rates for our undergrad students. All four of our divisions – the traditional undergraduate division, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, Professional & Graduate Studies and CURadio – have experienced substantial growth this year. I am deeply indebted to the outstanding team that God has given me to work with, and they deserve much of the credit for this banner year. I am thankful as well for an outstanding Board of Trustees, which guards the policies and fiscal integrity of the university while helping to advance our identity, mission and vision. As our mission and vision statements remind us, we continue to be intentional about making Cornerstone University a Christ-centered, student-focused learning environment in order to develop wise and worshipping followers of Christ who are able to distinguish themselves in their callings and careers so that they can influence the cultures of our world for Christ. Our entire community embraces this important outcome, and all that we do on campus focuses on accomplishing this goal for the glory of Christ. More than wanting to become a great university, we want to graduate great people who can be effective in their communities and churches for Christ and His Kingdom. Thank you for the part that you play in making all of this possible. Your prayers, financial support, entrusting us with your children and all the other ways that you bless and encourage us is deeply appreciated. If you have any questions about what you find in this report, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me or one of my colleagues. All the best, Joe Stowell, President it is with great joy and a deep sense of gratitude that I share this annual report with you. Not only is your interest in Cornerstone University and partnership with us a personal encouragement to me, but it has also enabled us to bring an outstanding report to you regarding what has happened over the past year. As you read the stories and review the graphs and charts in this 2012 Annual Report, I trust that you will rejoice with us in the wonderful way that God continues to bless Cornerstone University. This report is our way of being accountable to you and to demonstrate the return on investment that will be added to your account in heaven (Phil. 4:17). dear friend of cu: JoestowellinDowntownGrandRapids ©Coastlinestudios2008

  • 11. 11 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report God blesses His people through spiritual gifts whether we recognize them or not. CU has also been thoroughly blessed over the year by its’ gifts – thanks to God’s unending love for His people and inspiring those who gave, prayed, and ultimately believed in Cornerstone University. From opening its’ doors in 1941, Cornerstone University has seen a variety of gifts come to this campus, including expanding the overall geographical footprint of the University, the construction of residence halls, dining commons, athletic facilities, and classrooms; along with many renovations to those buildings. Physically, those changes have influenced Cornerstone University but the people God brought to CU through these changes have inspired this campus to what it is today. The Cornerstone University baseball program has seen God work in this way throughout their project. Head baseball coach, David Mitroff, cannot emphasize enough the work God has done in bringing players to CU through the building of the baseball stadium. “I don’t just want to invest in players’ athletic abilities while they are here,” said Mitroff. “I want to invest in their character and spiritual growth.” Coach Mitroff has recruited players locally, nationally, and internationally that will contribute on the field but, more importantly, off the field. "When I first started receiving information from colleges in the mail my junior year,” said freshman Zach Bohl. “Cornerstone was the only non-baseball university whose mail I kept. Even though it didn't initially have baseball, Cornerstone was always in the back of my mind because I knew it was such an amazing school. When I heard about Jack DeWitt's donation and the beginning of a baseball team, I knew it was a sign. I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ every night before I go to bed for giving me the chance to go to Cornerstone. I love the Christian atmosphere on campus, the quality education, the close-knit community, and the opportunity to be on the inaugural baseball team and start the program off on the right foot. I can't wait to put on that CU uniform!" Dr. Stowell, Coach Mitroff, and many donors had a vision for Cornerstone University – their vision was in God’s plan. Throughout the recruiting process, Coach Mitroff was able to reach out to individuals from across the globe that would help weave the team that Mitroff envisioned for CU. It’s not only finding players that would impact the campus, but also ones that would help their teammates become closer to God. When asked about choosing Cornerstone, Cullen Montgomery said, "I chose Cornerstone for several reasons”, said the incoming pitcher. “The first, being that I felt God leading me to come here. I see a growing momentum with this school within the faculty, staff, and students that is exciting to be around. I have been able to see strong Christian values acted out and practiced in a day-to-day environment. In my short visit, I saw a passion for God and ministry that I haven't found anywhere else. I see a school that has its collective priorities in line with how life should be. Cornerstone is an amazing place filled with Godly people, doing His work, learning and working hard in the classroom, and competing in the arena of sports with the aim of doing everything to glorify our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." The Cornerstone University baseball program is just one of the many examples of how God uses a variety of ways to reach people for Christ. May God bless the baseball team this season and that they will continue to have an impact in our world for Christ on and off the field. Providing a platform to reach individuals for christ can come in many different forms. Building the Cornerstone University baseball stadium is doing just that. But it's more than just baseball; it's about impacting the world for Christ through His gifts. beyond the field CUMen'sbaseballteam'sfirsthomegame(©RyanPrinsPhotography2012)

  • 13. 13 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report Huber, Dean of Student Engagement, was led by the Lord to come to Cornerstone University in 2009. He currently works with students to enhance their time at CU and, more importantly, their walk with Christ. “Before coming to Cornerstone,” said Huber, “I already had a passion for global engagement. I wanted to bring that here.” On prior trips to Zambia, Huber saw, first-hand, the massive effects Malaria has on the African population. “Malaria is the No. 1 taker of life in sub-Saharan Africa and obviously a huge concern for those who live in this part of the world.” Bed nets are a cost-effective way to prevent people from contracting malaria. Aside from expensive and scarce medical services, Huber could make a realistic difference but he needed some help. The Cornerstone University men’s soccer team became the vehicle for Chip’s mission. “There was no group on campus that people expected to do less when it came to service and missions work. Yet this was the group that most immediately accepted me and my family at Cornerstone University; the men’s soccer coach became one of my best friends and the players were often my lunch table companions.” [Pg. 190] Throughout Huber’s beginning years at CU, he has expanded his vision into a campus-wide event. In 2010, Huber thought, “What if we charged a $6 admission to a men’s soccer game that would purchase one bed net?” This idea became concrete as they raised enough money to purchase 500 nets for families in Zambia. The following year his efforts were more than doubled when they raised enough for 1,100 nets. This has remained an annual fundraiser entitled, ‘Night of Nets’ where he raises money through men’s and women’s soccer games and, forthcoming, a women’s volleyball game to purchase bed nets for families in Africa. Huber has seen his very own passion lived out through student after student. “Soccer connects their passion with our greater global passion,” said Huber. Chip Huber has gotten the opportunity to take some of the students to Africa and show them the impact they have on a village in Zambia. “Getting involved with night of nets and having the opportunity to travel to Zambia has been unparalleled to any experience I have had in my life. I have personally seen parents who have lost children due to a preventable disease. It has been amazing to see what God has done at Cornerstone and in my own life through something so simple. The impact of giving a family a mosquito net that will potentially save their lives is something I will never forget. Because of this, it doesn't matter if we raise six dollars or 50,000 dollars, it is absolutely worth it.” – Isaac Grotenhuis (Senior) Chip Huber recently published a book entitled, The Zambia Project: The Story of Two Worlds Flipped Upside Down. This book shares a story about what a group of students could do to help bring transformation to an African village and their experience throughout the process. “Simply put, I just can’t stay away...I can’t stay away because of the moment I will experience as we drive down a rough and dusty dirt path to my little village that I call a second home. It is the moment when a mother weeps when handed the mesh net that will save her child’s life. It is the moment when I am all at once overwhelmed with grief, with joy, with compassion, with deep concern, and with hope. It is the moment when I am perhaps most fully alive as I experience the vast breadth of human emotions in my heart and mind.” [Pg. 193] chip huber brought more to cornerstone university than just his background of working closely with students – he also brought was his passion for global needs. • 15. 15 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report Becoming a Global Influence One student who participated in a recent China experience articulated his personal and purposeful plan to be a Kingdom influence through business as a result of this immersion experience as follows: “A clear learning point in the Global Experience was to see that a blend of ministry and business activity is needed. I must do my job and run my business in a way that is profitable, sustainable and in a way that increases shareholder value. Dr. Simpson notes in our opening meeting that the blend of these things is part of what makes up the transformational model. The business community is the bridge that links people to the church. We must be able to have a platform in business, however. That requires us to do our work with excellence, build relationships with the people we work with, ensure that our customers are finding value, and then be alert to how God is working around us that we might be used by Him.” He continued: “I will pray daily for opportunities to continue to build redemptive relationships, to share my faith, to engage with coworkers in bible studies, and seek to be a transforming influence.” In January, Skot Welch (CU Board Member) and Dr. Robert Simpson, associate provost, led a Global Immersion Experience to South Africa. The 18 business leaders on the trip were able to learn about societal transformation through Christian companies with world class global business practices. During the visit the group had interaction with transformative leaders from global companies like the Louis Group, Bosasa and Amway South Africa. At the Louis Group, Michael Louis shared how the Louis family has consistently applied the principles of Christian and family values upon which all their entrepreneurial interests are founded. The family's relationship-minded and solution-driven approach has led to the extension of the Group's interests to property, financial services, technology, hotel ownership and management, table grape and wine farming, and venture capital. The leaders at Bosasa expressed that they are about transformation of lives. Every day, every function, every activity is geared to making a difference. Every member of staff is chosen for having the ability to act with higher Kingdom motivations. The business leaders from the US had a chance to visit one of the correctional centers where they heard about and witnessed transformation in the lives of the young men. The company is quick to point out that while they are a successful company, capitalism is not only about material things, it is about how it can be and is used to transform lives. In Soweto (outside Johannesburg) participants observe the transformation of community through the Amway South Africa model. Local residents are empowered and there is an awakening of the entrepreneurial spirit. Soweto, which was once suppressed by apartheid in South Africa, is now seeing economic growth. Amway is part of this economic empowerment. “Those individuals who are serious about seeing God working globally should participate in a Transformational Global Experience,” Dr. Robert Simpson. are you ready to participate in a "Global Immersion Experience" designed to give you exposure to various models of societal transformation? Each of the experiences to China, Czech Republic, South Africa and Israel are designed to equip and empower leaders to integrate their faith and calling, to be culturally intelligent, and to be a Christian influence through their work in transforming societies. • 17. 17 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report We design all of our academic programs with an eye toward instilling six qualities that are essential for effective Christian cultural influence: • Spiritual maturity • Critical thinking • Creativity • Professional skill • Cross-cultural agility • Emotional health Achieving these vital qualities in our students requires relevant and rigorous academic programs. That’s why we have in place a task force on Academic Rigor that ensures a high level of academic rigor and consistency in academic rigor across our academic programs. We also include in every course syllabus a “Statement of Academic Expectations” at Cornerstone University, which emphasizes the importance of significant student effort both inside and outside of class. As provost, I am proud of the fact that our incoming students rank above those in our peer group in their ACT scores, yet our university’s overall grade point average is below that of our peer group. Starbucks may do a lot of things well; but if it doesn’t brew a great cup of coffee, none of those other things matter. As a university, among all of our other functions, our basic commitment is to quality academic programs. Doing so not only fulfills our calling to love God with our minds, but it provides our students with the education they need to change their world for Christ. Dr. Rick Ostrander (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame), Cornerstone University Provost and author of Why College Matters to God At Cornerstone university, academic excellence is central because developing our minds is one important way that we glorify God and show our love for Him. In addition to that, academic excellence enables us to fulfill our mission of preparing students to influence the world for Christ. academics matter at Cornerstone University JosiahFarr,ArtofMinistry,2016 ©RyanPrinsPhotography2012

  • 21. 21 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report The global financial crises, which began in 2008, underscored the importance for businesses, including higher education institutions, to have sufficient cash reserves. We have worked hard over the past few years to set aside operational funds to provide sufficient flexibility when the unexpected happens. This year we were able to add approximately $1,000,000 towards increasing our cash reserves. Cornerstone University has also made significant gains increasing our revenue. This was achieved through two main areas. First, in fiscal year 2012, financial contributions to the University increased significantly. We received approximately $7,200,000 in temporarily restricted gifts, many of these being given for our new baseball and residence hall project and a future chapel project. Second, our operational revenue generated primarily from tuition, room, and board increased approximately 15% due to higher enrollment and retention levels in our traditional and adult programs. As these revenue levels increase, it is important to control and monitor expenses of the University. As revenue grew 15%, our expenses grew 13%. Monitoring actual results to budgeted expectations is a regular practice at Cornerstone University to ensure that expenses are managed appropriately. We stand committed to continue building on the current financial strength of Cornerstone University. We sense daily God’s rich blessings and provision for the work that we are doing in and through Him. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve Him as we seek to fulfill the vision of Cornerstone University: To create a thriving community of fully devoted followers of Jesus in a spiritually contagious, academically excellent, richly resourced, and culturally diverse learning environment that attracts outstanding students, faculty, and staff who influence our world for Christ, His Church and His Kingdom. Nancy Schoonmaker, Chief Financial Officer At Cornerstone university we are keenly aware that having a strong financial base will allow us to effectively carry out our mission and achieve our vision. I am happy to report that Cornerstone has continued to build this strong financial base over this past fiscal year ending May 31, 2012. There are many facets to building financial strength and stability. At Cornerstone, we have focused on three specific areas over the last several years: liquidity, revenue growth and expense monitoring. • 27. 27 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report No one could have seen God's generous gifts that He would direct our way over the past 12 months. Dr. Stowell likes to refer to these God-sized gifts as signature miracles, events that are given to drive us to our knees to thank the One from whom all our gifts originate. These happenings are beyond human explanation therefore we must be grateful to God for their origin. As you have looked over this beautiful piece you have undoubtedly seen the fiscal strength God with which has blessed Cornerstone University. The outcome of our strategies is primarily to build inspired women and men to flourish in the culture God has placed them to bring about the transformation He desires. Every May we graduate classes to accomplish this purpose and your generosity makes that happen. We are grateful those classes are growing. In the Advancement realm we are drawn to growing numbers but our best work is done in the stories behind the numbers. This report is the 30th done while Brian Jackson has been employed here at CU. Over the years Brian has seen his role adapt, change, morph and get weird more times than he cares to remember. Through it all Brian has served Christ well in steadfastly creating opportunities to meet with people and provide avenues for generosity. Brian does this because of the impact CU and GRTS has had on his own life. His beautiful wife Kathy was met in class here. His children practically grew up on campus and while one has graduated, one remains. He has worked for managers, directors, vice presidents and presidents. He has seen President Bush on this campus and has prayed with students in their struggles. Through it all he has maintained a great attitude and dependence on God to bring about supernatural results. His story is indicative of the exceptional work done by our alumni and is a direct result of your giving. Without the excellent students who enter here or the gifts given by our friends we would not be in the position we are in today. Thank you once again for generously sharing in the resources God has directed to you and your family. Bill Knott Vice President for Advancement our annual report is a once a year celebration of the financial performance of Cornerstone University and is primarily read by meticulous minded friends who want to be inspired by the metrics that financial performance provides. Thank you for joining with us in this celebration. I trust the information you have found in this document is an encouragement to you. • 35. 35 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report The Bible is a constant reminder of how God wants us to reach out to those who haven’t heard His Word, whether it’s through the outlet of providing bed nets for children in Zambia, communicating His truths to citizens of various countries on a global immersion trip, or building a baseball stadium that serves as more than just a physical presence on campus. God continues to bless Cornerstone University by providing us with the resources to reach out. We strive to impact those globally, within our own country and state, and, most importantly, on our campus. We thank you for your faithful giving to Cornerstone University as you continue to support our mission of empowering men and women to excel as influencers in the world for Christ. Through prayer or financial giving, Cornerstone University is seeing the Lord’s work being done on campus and throughout the world. Thank you for your prayers and gifts in support of Cornerstone University. Our students are the direct beneficiaries of all the gifts we receive. Paul A. Hageman Student Fund Coordinator Jesus spent much of his time here on earth with people viewed as unpopular or less-fortunate; from the tax collectors, to the lepers, to the poor – He set the example of how we should minister to others. Letter From CU Student Fund Coordinator

  • 37. 37 • Cornerstone University 2012 Annual Report “I want to thank all the donors who gave to Cornerstone this year! Their generosity has a huge impact on our campus, and we [students] are so thankful for them! We really appreciate their willingness to let God work through them in this way and passing on such a blessing to us students.” – Stacy Lewis (Sophomore) "Thank you to all who have donated their gifts to the Cornerstone Student Fund. As a student who currently attends Cornerstone, it means a lot because your donations directly impact myself and my fellow classmates! Also, Cornerstone is at the place where it is today because of you! Thanks again! – Sarah Kubanek (Sophomore) "The Kern Scholars Program has been a great blessing in my life. My wife and I were committed to remaining debt-free throughout our Seminary education even though it was going to take us many years to work our way through. The Kern Scholars Program has made it possible for me to attend school full-time, being equipped for the work that God has called me to do and to remain debt free. My deepest thanks go to the Kern Family Foundation for making this possible." – Ben Phebus
