e’ve waited all
year for this
season, a time
when we want to be outside
and enjoy everything that
Muskoka has to offer.
Unfortunately, one of the things
it offers is mosquitoes, and they
can shorten your cottage season
by chasing you inside.
“You can’t be at the cottage
without some kind of insect
protection,” says Jordan Lavin,
of Mosquito.Buzz. His firm
specializes in season-long
mosquito control at homes
and cottages from Muskoka to
southern Ontario.
Eliminating mosquitoes from
a property begins with larvae
control – mosquitoes breed
in stagnant water, so the first
step is to eliminate as much
of this as possible. Children’s
toys, empty buckets, and even
rain pooling in the bottom of
a boat can provide a nursery
for mosquitoes to breed.
In areas where standing water
remains – small ponds and
water features, for example
– a larvicide can be applied
to prevent mosquitoes from
hatching.
The next line of defence is
fogging. Using backpack
foggers, Jordan’s team
delivers product to key
areas – under decks, around
landscape features, and on
the underside of dense plant
materials. These are areas
where mosquitoes rest.
“Backpack foggers allow
us to be very specific about
where we spray,” says Jordan.
“We carefully target and
treat these areas of your
property where mosquitoes
live, rest, and hide. It’s a
focused approach, and brings
effective results.”
Having portable equipment
allows the team to travel
to any property, including
islands.
The company offers two
control options – an all-
natural product, as well as a
synthetic option, depending
on the cottage owner’s
preference. “Our application
kills mosquitoes right
away, as well as provides a
barrier that makes the area
unappealing to new mosquito
arrivals. The product dries
within half an hour, but
mosquitoes can still detect it
for the next 25 days,” Jordan
explains. “For up to 25 days,
they will have a hard time
finding anywhere in your
yard to rest: it turns your
property into an environment
where they can’t survive.”
The treatment is repeated
every 25 days throughout
the summer, with five
applications that keep the
area free of mosquitoes from
the beginning of May into
the fall. DS
