Looking back at the preliminary task, what
1. Looking back at the preliminary task,
what do you think you have learnt
from the progression from it to the
full task?
2. Planning
Similar to what we did for our preliminary task, we
planned out what we would be doing. This meant
writing down a brief outline of what would
happen, and the shots we would be using in our
piece. Similar to our preliminary task we wanted
our idea to have the feel of mystery and
suspense, so ideas such as not being able to see
the protagonists face were put forward as ideas.
This eventually led to our initial idea of a girl who
we see a lot of close ups of, and are finally
revealed her face, while still maintaining the
creepy atmosphere.
3. Filming
When doing the preliminary task we used the camera in a quite straightforward
way, using angles such as high and low angles, and also using a lot of close ups.
When it came to our main task we did still use a lot of the camera techniques
from our preliminary task, however also used more advanced shots. As we knew
from using high angle shots in the preliminary task, we knew it made a character
look weak and powerless, so we decided to use this again in or piece, when we
wanted our character to look innocent. Similar to a high angle shot, we also used
a low angle shot to make our character look dominant and sinister.
What we did in our main task that we didn't do
in our preliminary task was using the zoom on
the camera. This was used to establish the shot
of the bedroom and the obsession of the girl
showing the pictures surrounding her mirror. We
also used an establishing shot both here and at
the start of the piece when we tracked the shot
of a park full of trees to represent an adventure
that the protagonist is on. We also panned
across the house which allowed us to show the
setting of where it was taking place.
4. Editing
When it came to editing our preliminary task we only knew how to cut as only a few of
use had previously used Final Cut Pro before, however, this all changed when it
came to our main task piece. We all knew what we wanted the piece to look like, it
was just the fact of finding out how to do it. In the end we were able to get what
we wanted editing wise. In our piece we used the simple cutting technique,
however, we used more advanced editing techniques this time, different to in our
preliminary task. We used a match cut in our piece to connect two scenes together
so that it makes sense (going from the bathroom and turning of a tap to the
bedroom lighting a candle).
We also used a cross dissolve changing the colour of the piece at the beginning from
black and white to colour, allowing the audience to be able to see the blood going
down the sink and also bring them back into reality.
We also used a lot of fading in and out to
separate certain scenes and maintain the dark
feel to the piece. We also added our own
original music that we created on Garage
Band. Similar to Final Cut Pro hardly anyone
had ever used Garage Band, so this was a new
experience for us, however it worked perfectly
and we got the sound we waned, were as with
the preliminary task, we got music from other
artists.
