Want to know how to service clients?
This guide will quickly and easily set out the five core steps to going freelance and making your clients happy. We've condensed the client-consultant relationship into concise slides for first time consultants to understand the principles required to be effective consultants.
These slides are supplemented by our other materials, available on our website and on Amazon.co.uk.

7. • The best way to write a proposal is to ask your
client questions until you understand what they
want and how you can fix it (this may take a call,
a meeting and a follow up call). (£££)
8. • The second best way to write a proposal is to ask
the client what they want you to do, write it
down, then give it back to them. (£)
9. • The third best way to write a proposal, aka the
worst, is to write some ideas, attach them to an
email and send them to someone you’ve never
met. Don’t do this. (£££)
11. • The best way to establish your value (for yourself
and for your client) is to understand the client’s
need and the value that you are going to deliver
to them and to set your fee as a percentage of
the total value (e.g. 10%). If you can, you should
put a number to it, and make it clear to the client
what you are delivering and why your fee is
equitable. (£££)
12. • The second best way to establish your value to
you and your client, is to set a daily or hourly rate
for your work based on the market rate (eugh)
and then estimate the time it will take you to do
the work in your proposal. (Yawn). (£)
13. • The third best way to establish your value, aka
the worst, is to set your rate really low and then
be annoyed at your client for not paying you
more. Don’t do this. (£££)
15. • The best way to do the work for your client is to
fulfil the proposal you put forward on time and in
budget and to find an additional way to add
value that will surprise and delight your
customer. Become indispensable (thanks Seth
Godin). (££££) (yes, four).
16. • The second best way to do the work for your
client is to deliver the work on time and in
budget. (££)
17. • The third best way to do the work for your client,
aka the worst, is to not complete the project / to
forget to deliver something / to walk off the
project and stop responding. Don’t do this. (£££)
19. • The best way to get paid by your client is to send
an invoice promptly at the beginning of your
project, or at the end of the month (you choose),
to take credit card payments and to make sure
your invoices are clear and unambiguous. (£££)
20. • The second best way to get paid by your clients is
to issue an invoice at the end of your project and
hope that it gets paid. (££)
21. • The third best way to get paid by your client, aka
the worst, is not to issue an invoice / to issue an
invoice that your client isn’t expecting / to issue
an invoice with mistakes on it etc. etc. Don’t do
this. (£££)
