Mercy Hospital is a 25 bed in-patient hospital that serves nearly 10,000 patients a year, regardless of ability to pay, in a country that has less than 200 doctors for a population of 5.5 million. The hospital provides community health education, medications, diagnostic laboratory and a fully stocked pharmacy supplied with pure, reliable medications. In Sierra Leone the cost of health care services is too high for most people to afford, medication supply is unreliable, and quality diagnostic testing services are limited to the wealthy and those living in the capitol city of Freetown. There are 25 highly trained medical staff led by a licensed physician and a state-registered nurse midwife. Mercy Hospital provides in hospital care as well as village outreach for HIV/AIDS patients, prenatal care, malaria prevention and treatment and nutrition education and treatment.
