UAS OVERVIEW:
Unmanned Aircraft Systems or more commonly referred to as UAV’s (Unmanned
Aircraft Vehicles) are pilotless aircraft systems that can be both controlled and
monitored from a ground control station by a trained pilot. The term UAS was
introduced to emphasize the fact that more than one apparatus is involved rather
than just the aircraft solely.
Despite being heavily military based, there has been a push for commercial usage
over the past few years and a market is expected to emerge at the beginning of
2016.
The following graph shows the predicted growth of the UAS industry within the next
decade:
THE FUTURE HORIZON

UAVSI). Graph gathered from UK Business Insider.
POTENTIAL USAGE OF UAV’S:
Although currently used by the military for intelligence gathering and attacks on
insurgent forces, there are limitless potential uses for UAV’s in the commercial sector.
Below are just a few of the many possibilities:
Surveillance and monitoring: Many industries are looking into the usage of drones
to monitor current operations and the opportunity to use 3D mapping for future
exploration.
Delivery services: Drones in the for-seeable future have the potential to completely
revolutionize the logistics industry with companies such as Amazon interested by the
idea.
Public Services: UAV’s are further illustrating their opportunity to enhance the
emergency services sector by improving search and rescue missions, providing people
with necessary first aid kits (already proved successful) and aiding police chases.

UAV CATEGORIES:
Although the market currently encompasses hundreds of different models suited to different
technological needs, there are 4 categories of UAV’s in particular that have been clearly
defined: MINI, LALE, MALE & HALE.
MINI (Miniature) UAV’s *
Portable devices that weigh only a couple of KGs, with a duration of 30 minutes to 2
hours and a max. height of 12,000 feet. Only an RC link is required.
LALE (Low Altitude Long
Endurance) UAV’s *
Roughly 3 times the size of MINI’s with a weight capacity of 15-20KG’s and an endurance
time of 24 hours. LALE’s have a radius span of over 500KM and require an LOS
(Microwave/ GSM/RF/VHF/BLOS/SATCOM) or SATCOM (Ku-/Kaband).
MALE/HALE (Medium/High
Altitude Long Endurance)
UAV’s *
Much larger devices capable of heights up to 30,000 feet and higher for HALE UAV’s
with a duration of 16-30 hours. Required links are: LOS (Microwave/
GSM/RF/VHF/BLOS/SATCOM) or SATCOM (Ku-/Kaband).
*Specifications are subject to change with the information provided used to highlight the overall usage of each
particular category.
Solution for MSS Applications
REASONS TO INVEST IN UAV TECHNOLOGY:
Cost effective in the long run
Time reduction (further efficiency).
Limited liability.
CONCLUSION:
Despite the negative image picked up through the military usage of drones, the public image since
the Iraq War is changing thanks to the emphasis of commercial usage with the opportunities to help
preserve wildlife, prevent human causalities and to provide an outstanding vision for our future.
ABOUT USE:
USE develops and manufactures the next generation of Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) products to provide
communication solutions. The aim is to address crucial needs of displacement and network independence demands
all over the world.
USE is looking to provide Customers with a value-for-money solution which supports their communication
requirements, and provide specific added value applications to support their requirements.
The brochure provided highlights an exciting new industry approaching the market which USE is looking to
implement various communication service solutions such as narrow and broad band to cater for a variety of uses.
