1. The HCG Diet Review
What is HCG?
HCԌ (Human Chorionic Gonаdotropin) is a human hormone produced
during pregnancy.
As the fetus grows, one job that HCG does is to deliver sufficient nutrients
to ensure the baby develops normally. The key as to why there is so much
interest in HCG is that one way that HCG acts is to employ the mother’s
body fat and make it available for the fetus. HCG does this by stimulating a
part of the brain called the hypothalamus to produce chemicals that release
stores of fat into the bloodstream which end up being burned up as energy
for the body. As this happens, additional nutrients are released out of the
fat stores and into the bloodstream and these are used to provide nutrition
both to the mother and fetus.
The crucial point is that this process can still occur even when the mother is
not pregnant, and it’s on this that the HCG diet hinges.

2. What is the HCG Diet?
The HCG diet comprises two elements:
HCG supplements
A diet plan
Dealing first with the HCG supplements: there are two kinds - oral
supplements, and injections. Both seem to work, but the oral supplements
are by far the easiest to manage for most people. Oral supplements from
reputable suppliers are relatively inexpensive, self-administered and do not
require a prescription. (Injections, on the other hand, are the opposite in
all respects. However if you are concerned or have questions, it’s always
best to consult a medical practitioner.)
Avoid HCG products that are overly cheap because, as with many things,
you tend to get what you pay for. Unfortunately legal regulation for
products like this falls into a gray area, and so there are ineffective products
available that do not work very well.

3. Turning to the diet plans, the most common approach is as follows:
The plan is undertaken in rounds or cycles, which can last from 26 days to
as long as 40 days.
At the start of the round you undertake 2 loading days (or “gorge”)
days when you eat what you like, and you also take your HCG
supplements
On day 3 the diet proper begins: maybe tea or coffee for breakfast,
and a low calorie regime for the rest of the day – typically 500
calories. There are few, if any, restrictions on when and what you eat
provided you stick to the low calorie part of the diet. You should also
be drinking 2 liters of water per day.
You continue to take the HCG supplements
Exercise is not part of the diet, although some light exercise is
acceptable.
At the end of the “round” when you have attained your target weight
(but no longer than 40 days from the start) you stop taking the HCG
supplement, and for three more days continue with the low calorie
diet.
After the round is complete you undertake the maintenance phase
which is a further 3 weeks of no starches or sugars but anything else
goes.
