Where is the Zika virus currently?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned
that the Zika virus is “spreading explosively” in the
Americas, especially in Central and South America,
and in the Caribbean islands.
How is the Zika virus spread?
Zika is spread through mosquito bites and while
symptoms of the disease are usually mild and last
less than a week, there is no vaccine available.
Mosquitoes that can transmit the Zika virus have
been found to live in nearly all U.S. states, according
to maps released by authorities. The maps show
the two breeds of virus-carrying mosquitoes, the
yellow fever and the Asian tiger mosquito, can live
in the nation’s northernmost states of Michigan,
New Hampshire, Washington state and Minnesota,
according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC). The mosquitoes, whose
scientific names are Aedes aegypti and Aedes
albopictus, were concentrated most heavily in the
U.S. Southeast and Southwest, according to the CDC
maps that break each state down to its individual
counties. In the U.S., Zika has only been found in the
territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the
U.S. Virgin Islands.
Is the Zika virus fatal?
Though the Zika virus is generally not fatal, its links
to possible birth defects like microcephaly and
Guillain-Barré syndrome have proven worrisome
to individuals traveling to or considering travel to
these areas. Zika, which has been linked to numerous
cases of the birth defect microcephaly in Brazil, has
spread rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Microcephaly is marked by small head size that can
lead to severe developmental problems in babies.
Recently, some countries worldwide have reported
an increased incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome
following infection with the Zika virus. Guillain-Barré
syndrome is a disorder in which the body’s immune
system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system.
Does my company’s travel policy
cover Zika?
Many companies have travel policies in place to
cover emergencies while traveling on business.
However, most of these travel policies do not
cover pandemics. Also, travel policies only cover
unforeseen risks, not ones that are already known.
Since Zika is already known to the public, it wouldn’t
be covered by the existing travel policy.
What can companies do to provide their
employees coverage for the Zika virus if
they’re traveling to a location where there
is a Zika warning?
The Global Entertainment Practice Group has
created a solution to this problem for people
traveling to Zika – affected areas. The coverage that
has been designed by the Global Entertainment
Practice Group is exclusive to Aon and provides
the broadest coverage for Zika virus. The illnesses
that are covered under the policy are microcephaly,
Guillain-Barré syndrome and any mental or physical
condition caused by infection of the Zika virus that
are known at the time of travel to any location with a
travel warning issued for the Zika virus.
What are the coverage limits for the
Zika virus?
The coverage limit is up to $1,000,000 per
person, but can be lower depending on the
company’s needs.

Where can the coverage be written?
The coverage can be written in 50 countries
around the globe. If a company has more than one
location around the world, one policy can be written
to cover all employees traveling to a Zika – affected
area regardless of where their travel is initiated from.
How long does the coverage last?
Claim Incurred Restriction : Incurred no longer
than 18 months from the expiry of the period
of insurance.
Do we have to purchase the
AD&D coverage?
Sum Insured Per Person is for up to $500,000, which
can be lowered if the company already has AD&D
through another policy in effect.
Are there any discounts available
for the coverage?
Yes, group discounts are available :
50-99 lives : 10%
100 - 249 lives : 20%
250+ lives : 30%
How do we obtain a quote?
Obtaining a quote for the Zika coverage is
simple. We would need the number of people
traveling to the Zika – affected area, the gender
breakdown between males and females and
in the planned duration of stay.
