Jacob left Beersheba and traveled toward Haran, stopping for the night and using a rock as a pillow. He dreamed of a ladder reaching from the ground into heaven with angels ascending and descending. God stood above the ladder and promised to protect Jacob wherever he went. When Jacob awoke, he set up the rock as a pillar and poured oil over it. He then promised that if God protected him on his journey, provided for his needs, and was with him, that God would be his God.
