1. GMA’s Amy Robach Diagnosed with Breast Cancer
On October 1st ABC TV anchor Amy Robach underwent a routine mammogram during a segment of
Good Morning America as part of a segment on women’s health to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness
month. She got the mammogram in hopes of encouraging viewers to get checked. "I was a little
reluctant at first," she told Robin Roberts on GMA Monday morning about her initial reluctance to be
screened. "I'm 40, I'm the age and I've been putting it off."

On this morning’s airing of Good Morning America, Amy Robach revealed to the morning show’s
audience that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo a bi-lateral mastectomy on
Thursday, Nov. 14. Currently, she doesn’t know the stage of her cancer or if it has spread. Doctors will
perform the bilateral mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery. At that point she will know more
about the challenges that will be facing her.
Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. The
damaged cells can invade surrounding tissue, but with early detection and treatment, most people
continue a normal life.
Facts about Breast Cancer
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.
Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with
breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.
Ms. Robach said that the doctors told her bluntly that the mammogram just saved her life. She was also
told that for every person who has cancer, at least 15 lives are saved because people around them
become vigilant. They go to their doctors and they get checked.
She hopes her story will do the same and inspire every woman who hears it to get a mammogram, to
take a self exam. No excuses. It is the difference between life and death.
