M = Better Android Smartphone Security Options?
According to this article from Bloomberg, the 'new' version of Android will be giving users enhanced
security features!
While security may not be as 'box-office' as the look and feel of the OS, I think that we can all accept
that it's becoming increasingly important as we use our smartphones as digital partners for
most every aspect of our lives!
Google's Android is set to give users the ability to control o
ver what kinds of information apps can access on their device (including photos, contacts or location).
If you recall, Google recently gave us the ability to see clear information about what a new app would
be accessing before we download it, giving us the choice to decide whether we can accept it or not.
Here is the app permissions screen that we currently see:
As you can see, this allows us to se what will happen and to choose to accept or not, but if we don't like
the permissions requested we can only choose to reect the app completely.
But the new Android M update is going one step further, and allowing use to decide which exact
permissions to authorise for any given app before it is installed onto our system.
3. This means that if there is an app that we really like, but it's requesting a permission that we don't like,
we should still be able to install the app, but just not give it that particular permission, therefore
protecting our privacy and being more secure.
Is Encryption Coming To All Devices?
It's also suggested that universal encryption could be coming to all Android smartphones.
This will not be popular with the NSA who strongly lobbied against this for Android 5.0 to the extent
where it was only adopted in Google's own 'Nexus' brand of smartphones, but it's increasingly looking
like the people want this as a feature, and so Google could well give us what we want!
What Else Will Android M Have?
Android 5.0 already had big changes to the OS interface design with 'Material Design' as you will no
doubt have noticed.
The more likely changes in 'M' will be:
Better connectivity between Android wearables and your smartphone
A hub to control all of your connected devices in one place
Unified notifications across all devices in real time
But until its official announcement at the end of May we'll just have to sit tight and hope for the best!
Your Turn...
Is this enhanced security for apps good news for Android smartphone users, or do you think it makes
no difference?
Would you actively check and select which permissions apps can have on your device in future with
this feature?
Would you welcome automatic encryption for all of the data on your Android device?
