Alexandre is taking the mission to restructure the Franco-Dutch flag carrier amidst
high cost base, labour unrest, big fuel bills and fierce competition from low-cost
carriers. Under his leadership, the airline returned to operating profit in 2013, the
first in three years after a prolonged crisis.
To keep Air France KLM financially healthy in 2015 and years ahead, especially
after the pilot strike in 2014, Alexandre is planning to adjust some of the airline’s

Tim Clark has been a member of the senior management team
since the year Emirates launched and was instrumental in
transforming the airline from a one-route carrier operating off a
dusty runway to a world leader serving more than 120
destinations.
He became President of Emirates airline in 2003 after spending
18 years helping build an aviation empire which owes much to
the route networks he established soon after joining as Head of
Airline Planning.
Tim Clark
President
Emirates
Clark joined Emirates in 1985 after establishing a reputation as a talented route planner during four years at Bahrain’s Gulf Air, which had
recruited him from the now-defunct British Caledonian Airways.
Using this experience, combined with the skills he developed while attaining an economics degree from London University in 1971, he
scrutinised demographic data and passenger statistics to identify profitable new routes for Emirates.
Clark saw potential in routes other airlines had passed over and for the first Emirates route, Pakistan was targeted - a nation which had a
population of more than 150 million people but just one state carrier. Dubai’s strategic location was obvious and services to India soon
followed, laying the foundations for him to build a sprawling network which now connects billions of people.

Al Ghaith is keen to draw attention to how flydubai’s brand livery came about – a striking blend of blue and orange representing Dubai’s
climate, landscape and coastline. With Dubai’s central location, a 5,500km flying range and the airline’s potential 2.5 billion passenger-
base, flydubai’s aircraft acquisition and route expansion show every sign of continuing at its current pace.
Under his leadership, flydubai was named ‘Low Cost Carrier of the Year’ at the 2014 CAPA Awards for Excellence in Aviation held in
Antwerp, Belgium. Awarded to the most innovative and influential carrier in its peer group, flydubai achieved this distinction in just five

Strategy and Information Technology.

Early in her career, Jayne left consulting and spent six years as an executive and was subsequently a CEO of two publishing and
marketing related businesses. She later returned to Bain as a senior leader in the Australian practice.
Under Jayne’s leadership, Jetstar is expanding in Asia via joint ventures in Singapore, Vietnam, Japan and Hong Kong as a key part of the
airline group's long-term strategy.
Barathan (Bara) Pasupathi has been Jetstar Asia’s Chief Executive Officer since
July 2012.
Bara has more than 16 years’ experience in senior roles across the aviation and
energy sectors and was a founding executive of Jetstar Asia, serving as its Chief

establish the airline through its merger with Valuair, fleet procurement and fuel
hedging. Jetstar Asia has since become the largest and most profitable low fares

Yoshiharu Ueki
Director & Chairman
Japan Airlines
Yoshiharu Ueki joined Japan Airlines in 1975 and worked as a JAL pilot about 35 years
before becoming the first ex-pilot to serve as the carrier’s president since February 2012.
He is leading JAL through remarkable stages of rebuilding its business after the carrier
resurfaced from roughly two years of bankruptcy protection.
In a recent interview with IATA in October 2014, Ueki shared his insights on the future of
LCCS in Japan, citing that though LCCs command about 30% of the market in America,
35% in Europe and 50% in Southeast Asia; low cost in Japan would not capture the market
in the same way with only about 8% share at present.
Even when Japan might not be a lucrative market for LCCs in anytime soon, the competition is not less tough, if not so competitive. Ueki
has a simple philosophy to drive JAL going forward: maximize revenues and minimize costs. To him, keeping it simple - by focusing on
the need to deliver the profit - is the key to success.
Arif Wibowo, former President Director of low-cost
carrier Citilink, was appointed as the President and
Chief Executive of the national flag carrier Garuda
Indonesia in December 2014.
The appointment came after Skytrax, the world’s leading
airline rater, certified Garuda as a five-star airline,
leaving Arif with a significant task of maintaining the
airline’s reputation amidst financial losses.
Arif Wibowo
President & Chief Executive Officer
Garuda Indonesia
Arif is not a new face at Garuda. He started his career in the aviation industry with the airline as an aircraft maintenance engineer from
1990 until 1994 and was Garuda’s executive vice president of sales and marketing prior to joining Citilink in May 2012.
Beginning with only nine aircraft — five of which were grants from Garuda — Arif led Citilink to grow into a leading budget carrier that
targets the middle class and young passengers. During the January-to-September period of 2014, Citilink recorded 5.4 million passengers,
double what it carried in the same period last year. Citilink also posted $3.8 million in profit in the third quarter of 2014, a swing up from the
$5.6 million loss from the same period last year.
Citilink has developed during Arif’s tenure, and now has a big business equal to older domestic airlines. Arif is thus the right choice to
continue the success of Emirsyah Satar - the former Chief Executive Officer.
Rahul Bhatia co-founded and built IndiGo into the country's largest
airline in 9 years with a one third market share.
While SpiceJet and Jet have been racking up losses, IndiGo under
Bhatia’s leadership makes money and has been doing so since
2009. In the fiscal year to March 2014, the latest for which official
numbers are available, it reported net profits of Rs 317 crore,
despite weak demand and intense competition combined with weak
currency to hurt performance. With its low costs, efficiency and
reliability of operations, IndiGo is estimated worth a valuation of
$1.3 billion to $1.4 billion.
Rahul Bhatia
Co-Founder
IndiGo
Indigo recently chose 6 banks - Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Standard Chartered, and India's Kotak
Mahindra Bank – for its IPO of up to $400 million that is believed to take place in early 2015.
Bhatia’s success mantra for IndiGo is four fold: Conviction, Risk Taking, Relationships and Planning and Operational Excellence.
Rusdi Kirana started out as a teenager selling American 'Brother'
typewriters. His real-life brother Kusnan Kirana put him through
school. Together they set up a travel firm, then Lion Air in June
2000.
Starting with just $900,000 in 1999, Rusdi and his brother have
built Lion Air into the largest airline in Indonesia by number of
passengers flown and fleet size.
According to a recent report by Financial Times, Rusdi is planning
Rusdi Kirana

to take the private airline public soon, and the most recent indicative value of the airline is about $2 billion, nearly double the value of the
listed national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia.
He’s planning for that growth with the largest-ever single commercial order from Boeing in its history, $21 billion placed in 2011 for 230
planes (with an option for 150 more). He followed that up in 2013 with a $24 billion order for 234 airplanes from Airbus, also the largest-
ever single order. A few months ago he did a relatively small $1 billion deal with Italy’s ATR for 40 turboprops. Thus in the last four years
Rusdi has committed to spend $46 billion to expand Lion, which will propel it into a major force in the global airline industry.
Carsten Spohr has been Chairman of the Executive Board and
Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Lufthansa AG since May 1,

this capacity, he was responsible for hub management, cabin crews and human resources at Lufthansa Passenger Airlines.
Under Carsten’s leadership, Lufthansa is looking to bring back the profitability of the Asian market that has suffered from fierce competition,
especially from players in the Middle East. Part of its strategies also includes launching a new low(er) cost long-haul airline.
Named as Malaysia Airlines' Chief Executive Officer in December 2014, Christoph
Mueller is tasked with the toughest job in aviation: turning around the fortunes of
beleaguered Malaysia Airlines.
Christoph’s current position requires absolutely the best aviation management
expertise, and in particular, a strong record of transformation and turnarounds in
the aviation industry; and his most recent achievement in turning round Irish
carrier Aer Lingus bodes well for his tenure at Malaysia Airlines.
Christoph joined Ireland’s national carrier as CEO in 2009. During his five years at
the Irish carrier Mueller expanded transatlantic services and fended off takeover
bids from Ryanair, Europe’s biggest low-cost airline.
Christoph completed an advanced management program at Harvard Business
School, and before joining Aer Lingus, was executive aviation director at TUI
Travel, an international leisure travel group, and chief financial officer of DHL
Worldwide before it was bought by Deutsche Post AG.
He is the first foreign CEO to head up Malaysia Airlines.

Patee Sarasin began his term as the Chief Executive Officer of Nok Air in early
2004.
Patee has been a driving force behind the success of the airline, utilizing his
marketing background and experiences and effectively applying them to Nok Air.
Under Patee’s leadership Nok Air has seen continuous growth in terms of
revenue, passenger numbers and destinations, as it reaches from its base in
Thailand across Asia. Today Nok Air has already recovered the initial investment
just after only two years of operation, and she continuously is growing towards a
strong, profitable and a healthy company.
Recently Nok Air entered a joint venture with Scoot to form NokScoot – a very
significant business transaction for Thailand’s low-cost airline sector as it creates
a business unit led by Thailand’s Nok Air and a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines,
arguably one of the world’s top airlines.

Piya Yodmani was named the Chief Executive of NokScoot in July 2014.
NokScoot, a joint venture between Thailand's budget Nok Air and Singapore's no-
frills Scoot.
Before joining NokScoot, Piya has worked at both full-service and budget airlines
for more than 20 years. He spent the past 10 years nurturing Nok Air since its first
days and will continue to remain its Deputy Chief Executive Officer. Previously, he

the position of General Manager, Northern Region in Malaysia before
accumulating experience in planning department as Department Manager of
Revenue Planning Department, General Manager in Indonesia and also the
Director of Long Term Planning Department.
Under Piya’s leadership, NokScoot will seriously challenge Thai Airways
International that has traditionally held the lion’s share of international traffic
connecting to Thailand’s domestic destination.
With its first flight to China and South Korea in May 2015, NokScoot is also
expected to intensify competition on the Thailand-East Asia market, as longhaul
budget rival Thai AirAsia X had already commenced services to Osaka, Tokyo-
Narita and Seoul in 2014.

University of Oslo. After over 20 years of legal practise, in 1993, he became one
of the founding partners and the Chairman of Norwegian Air Shuttle who took over
the remains of bankrupt Busy Bee. Norwegian started flights on the west coast of
Norway with Fokker 50s in cooperation with Braathens. In 2002, SAS bought
Braathens and terminated Norwegian’s west coast operation. In order to save
Norwegian and its employees, Norwegian turned into a complete Boeing 737
operation and went into head-to-head competition with SAS on domestic routes in
Norway.
Bjørn is now reshaping the low-cost travel across the Atlantic. Under his
leadership, Norwegian becomes the first of the large European low-cost carriers
to expand far beyond the region, today operating a small fleet of 787 Dreamliners
to large U.S.

Zhang Xiuzhi is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Spring Airlines
since 2004.
She has been instrumental in helping Spring develop a strong market presence in
China’s booming aviation sector catering not only to China’s first time flyer market
but also offering a new range of travel products targeting the increasingly more
sophisticated and price-conscious business segment. A staunch advocate of the
low-cost aviation model, Ms. Zhang has defied the critics and illustrated that not
only could the LCC model work in China – it could thrive!
She has been quick to take advantage of the favourable market conditions in
China, guiding the company on a path of rapid growth and expanding its fleet of
Airbus A320 aircraft in order to build a network that now covers all China’s major
business and tourist routes. She also has developed strong working relationships
with regional governments across China, creating mutually beneficial partnerships
that not only help stimulate economic growth but provide Spring with access to
China’s future economic powerhouses.
Taking the airline international is also a critical part of the company’s revolutionary
strategy. She worked to ensure that Spring became the first private carrier to be
granted a license to fly internationally by the Civil Aviation Authority of China in
2010. Today the company flies to Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Korea, Malaysia

  • 23. Yoshiharu Ueki Director & Chairman Japan Airlines Yoshiharu Ueki joined Japan Airlines in 1975 and worked as a JAL pilot about 35 years before becoming the first ex-pilot to serve as the carrier’s president since February 2012. He is leading JAL through remarkable stages of rebuilding its business after the carrier resurfaced from roughly two years of bankruptcy protection. Even when Japan might not be a lucrative market for LCCs in anytime soon, the competition is not less tough, if not so competitive.
