A new era of auto racing at Canandaigua Motorsports Park dawns in 2012 with the
addition of sprint cars to the already jam-packed Saturday night card.
The Castner Performance 305 Sprint Car class will accompany Original Pizza Logs
Big-Block Modifieds, NAPA Sportsman Modifieds, Parts Plus Street Stocks, Klein
Steel Retail Pure Stocks and Community Car Care of Waterloo New Legends
Sportsman, with bi-weekly events slated to showcase the popular winged warriors.
“Fans can expect to see a lot of action with the 305s,” said Mike Castner, 36, co-
owner of Castner's Performance Systems in Penn Yan N.Y., located southeast of
Canandaigua, less than a half-hour drive to the speedway. “They're a quick car
when the surface slicks up and can run wide open all the way around a place like
Canandaigua. There's always plenty of high-speed entertainment.”
With the lone visit by the Empire Super Sprints tentatively set for August, the
Castner Performance 305 Sprint Car agenda currently includes several race dates
at the legendary Ontario Co. Fairgrounds oval. The 550-horsepower machines make
their debut in May and close out the summer season in August.
“80% of our business covers pulling tractors and some drag racing, yet we've
wanted to get involved more with dirt racing and the circle track market for a couple
years now,” remarked Castner, who established CPS in 2007 with his father Mike
Sr. and cousin Ross Castner. “Drag and pulling engines are very sophisticated so
we're hoping to share some of our hi-tech ideas with the Modified, Sportsman and
Stock Car teams. We've got a state-of-the-art dyno in our shop, one that can tune
an engine to a specific track and Canandaigua will be a great proving ground for
what we have to offer.”
Not only will Castner's Performance Systems be highly visible as title sponsor of the
305 Sprints, Mike plans to be in competition every chance he gets. He also expects
the field to show consistent growth as the summer rolls on in Ontario County.
2. “I practically grew up at Canandaigua, made the trip there every Saturday night
when I wasn't running myself,” noted Caster, himself a sprinter around the Empire
State circuit from the late 1990s until the early part of the new millennium. Mike Sr.
chauffered a 4-Cylinder Mini-Modified at Black Rock (aka Dundee) Speedway in the
1980s before contending in the sprint car ranks from 1990 through the mid-2000s.
“Certainly looking forward to getting back, it was always a fun place to race.”
“Supporting this class is a nice deal for us being so close to home. The 305s provide
a great way to get your feet wet in sprint car racing without breaking the bank. Don't
be surprized to see some veteran sprinters get back behind the wheel, there's
already been a lot of interest from guys wanting to run Canandaigua,” Castner said.
