How to make sure that the diamond you purchase stays safe long
after paying for it
Most precious stones are expensive and are among the highly valued treasures anyone possesses.
Diamonds are especially more unique and valuable because of their properties of being the hardest
rock on earth. They can last centuries and be passed down from one generation to another. It does not
matter whether you have certified diamond earrings or a three stone pendant; every owner wants to
keep their pieces protected.
Sometimes one may need to leave their diamond with the jeweler for purposes of cleaning or repair.
While this may be an unavoidable necessity, there is always that underlying fear that the jeweler may
switch your genuine diamond piece for a lesser valued one. To prevent this from happening, there are
a number of precautions to undertake.
Ensure that your diamonds are GIA certified. If this is the case, then there is a chance that your
diamond has the certificate number from the GIA laboratories inscribed on it. This will make it easy
for you to trade your original diamond in case of any occurrences. It is also advisable to notify the
jeweler of the inscription so as to alert him of your excellent knowledge of what belongs to you. It
will also protect the inscription from being damaged during repair.
If it is not certified or your diamond does not have any special inscriptions to identify it by, you can
always ask the jeweler to show you the inclusions in your diamond before you leave it. Compare these
inclusions with what your certificate shows. Have a small sketch of the inclusions to use as a map
when returning for your jewelry. It also serves as a caution to the jeweler not to try anything funny
and hence avoid the temptation of switching the rings.
You are the only one who can take care of what belongs to you. Take the necessary precautions before
it is too late. Diamonds are not cheap all the same.
