The BEMEWS reaction to produce magnetically enhanced extended water networks and utilizes the BEMEWS catalyst. This presentation is to detail the synthesis of the BEMEWS catalyst but details that this entire scenario is in fact an April Fools joke. It is one of many such April Fools jokes. Science has unique language that distances us from the community and as scientists we should figure out how to make the communication of science at the right level for our various audiences. Brian Malow will present on communicating science at the ACS Meeting in New Orleans!

  • 1. The BEMEWS Reactionwww.chemconnector.com
  • 2. The BEMEWS reaction  Simple kitchen chemistry for spectacular results  Water  BORAX laundry detergent  White vinegar  Table Salt  BEMEWS catalyst  Rare earth magnetic sphere – preferably samarium-cobalt  1 minute to prepare + 24 hours of time….www.chemconnector.com
  • 3. Chemistry is Fun…www.chemconnector.com
  • 4. It all started with…a YouTube Videowww.chemconnector.com
  • 5. And my most popular Blogpost EVERwww.chemconnector.com
  • 6. Welcome to Jelly Marbleswww.chemconnector.com
  • 7. Jelly Marbles Jelly Marbles start out as hard crystals A polymer that absorbs 300 times its weight in water. The resulting spheres are approximately 99% water.www.chemconnector.com
  • 8. The BEMEWS Catalyst  Copper catalyst assists dissolution and helps initiate aggregation  Simple to synthesize using household chemicals  BEMEWS … Boron-Enhanced Magnetic Extension of Water Spheres  But…yes, we BEMUSED!www.chemconnector.com
  • 9. April 1st Science is Mainstreamwww.chemconnector.com
  • 10. Communicating Science can confuse  For example….from the original movie and slide deck: “Dendrimeric growth is multi-generational with layered extension via copper-catalyzed BORON seeding”  We should certainly improve how we communicate science to the public!!!www.chemconnector.com
