          Modals

Modals can be used in the past
         continuous:
They must have been waiting at
           8:30 p.m. =
They were probably waiting at 8:30
              p.m.
He might have been sleeping at
         10:30 p.m. =
Maybe he was sleeping at 10:30
             p.m.
You could have been doing your
homework this morning = You had
 the opportunity to be doing your
 homework this morning (but you
           didn’t do it.)
You should not have been driving so
  fast = It was a mistake that you
 were driving so fast. (Probably you
  had an accident or got a ticket
     because of this mistake.)
