1. Mungyeong Traditional Tea Bowl Festival
Period:
04.30.2010 – 05.09.2010
Description:
Discover the beauty of tradition at the Mungyeong Traditional Tea Bowl Festival. Resting in the foothills of Mt.
Sobaek in Gyeongsangbuk-do, the city of Mungyeong is proud of its ceramic heritage and is the only area in Korea
that continues to fire chassabal (tea bowls) using pine wood-burning traditional kilns. Enjoy the picturesque beauty
of Mungyeong Saejae (an elegant mountain pass built during the Joseon Era) and the set of the drama The Great
Sejong while taking part in a schedule of events geared toward lovers of pottery, culture and tea.
Celebrating the simple elegance of locally-made tea bowls, the festival offers visitors a variety of ways to
experience the local ceramic tradition. The works of well-known artists are on display including pieces created by
the three Korean ceramics masters who call Mungyeong their home. You might even have the opportunity to meet a
famous ceramic artist yourself. Feeling inspired? Get your hands dirty behind the potter’s wheel to create your own
2. tea bowl. Guests can also paint their own ceramics, sketch pictures of traditional tea cups, learn to light a traditional
kiln and wriggle their toes in the prized clay used to make Mungyeong tea bowls.
More than just a local cultural event, the small city of Mungyeong opens its doors to the world and features
international culture, artisans and teas. Visitors can compare tea bowls from around the globe as well as purchase
pieces by ceramic artists from two dozen countries. Global tea culture will be on display, featuring tea etiquette from
countries including Japan and China and a variety of different traditional tea ceremonies. Teas from around the
world are also showcased, making it easy for visitors to choose a couple of varieties to brew up at home.
