Guest poster Abby Lai shares her story of how she cured her severe eczema naturally!
Ameer recently wrote a wonderful post on how to heal your heal
eczema naturally.
As a former severe eczema sufferer, I wanted to shed some light on these natural remedies that he
shared, since I feel strongly that conventional medicine has missed the mark on this.
On my website (which I dedicate to writing about how to help people cure their eczema naturally), I get
tonnes of emails from people asking me how to help their eczema, so I thought it would be timely to
share my personal experience and tie it back to the natural remedies that Ameer shared in his blog post.
Below is a before and after photo of my skin before implementing natural remedies and after moving to
all natural alternatives:
2. Before looking into natural alternatives, I had been using conventional medication, steroids, and
cortisone creams for at least 10 years. Below is proof that using natural remedies did more for my skin in
2 months than the medication did in 10 years!
If you or someone you knows suffers from eczema, it can be very daunting and frustrating living with the
constant itch and not knowing what to do or how to help it. If you were like my case, doctors usually
only tell you that there is no cure, and that the only way to help it is to continue to put medication on,
which, sadly, will only suppress the inflammation more. I’m glad that I have been able to find natural
remedies that work for me – but it wasn’t always this case.
Here’s a little bit of my story.
3. When I was 15, my eczema had flared up insanely. I would wake up with blood on my nails and dead
skin all over my bed and on the floor. It was a really terrifying experience since many doctors told me it
was the worst that they had ever seen. They kept telling me that there was no cure for eczema. I was
embarrassed and devastated by this – especially as a young teenage girl who always had to cover up my
skin with sweaters, long shirts, and wear make up to cover it up. It was especially painful to even walk or
take a shower because of the open wounds.
This is me in my teens at prom with my eczema flare up (which was not yet at its worst).
Fast forward 10 years later – my eczema would flare on and off, but I was still following the same
protocol: medication, steroids, cortisone cream – yet nothing seemed to work. I was getting worse and
my body even started tingling when I ate the wrong foods. My body was suppressing the inflammation
without me even knowing it.
After trying to find a solution for so long, I decided to try alternative treatments instead. I ended up
using natural remedies (which I talk more about below), similar to the ones Ameer described in his post,
(how to heal your eczema) and I had seen such an incredible difference!
4. After the eczema had healed!
In my experience of suffering from eczema for over a decade, I’ve spent over hundreds (or possibly even
thousands) of dollars trying to find a cure – be it through medication, steroids, or cortisone creams. I’ve
discovered that many people are also on the same boat, and many practitioners don’t know the solution
to curing eczema – and this is something that I feel needs to be addressed.
This is why I’m so glad that people like Ameer are sharing natural remedies that will actually work and
are more holistic and beneficial to your body. Unlike steroids and conventional medications, they don’t
suppress your eczema flare ups, but instead, will work synergistically in your body as a whole to heal all
of the systems naturally.
How to heal your eczema
Here are a few things that I did to help my eczema get better:
Changed my diet
If you read Ameer’s post, intestinal permeability (aka. leaky gut) can be a huge factor that affects
eczema. I definitely had a leaky gut: I was constantly gassy, had trouble digesting foods, and had tingling
5. sensations in my body (especially in my fingers) whenever I ate the wrong foods. In 2012, my friend
asked if I wanted to try the elimination diet with her to help both of our eczema’s get better. I ended up
trying this and switched to an all natural, unprocessed, and whole foods diet. Within 2 months, I had
experienced tremendous healing.
Fix your Gut
Most people with eczema have some sort of gut dysbiosis, since the skin is a reflection of what is going
inside the body. I started eating a lot of probiotics (that had at least 10 billion CFU) and filling my diet
with fermented foods, such as sauerkraut. This improved my digestion and filled my gut with good
bacteria to help my skin heal.
Doctors also used to give me antibiotics frequently whenever I was not feeling too well, so I stopped
relying on antibiotics (as they can really kill a lot of the good bacteria in the gut). I also noticed that my
skin would dry out as a side effect of the antibiotics, so by eliminating/reducing it and relying on natural
antibiotics like garlic, onions, and oregano oil, this has kept my gut healthier and happier.
Reduce stress
We often overlook stress and we don’t even realize the extent that it affects us. When my skin healed, I
was having a lot of trouble getting the last 5-10% of my skin to heal. I was so frustrated because I
couldn’t figure out why. I was eating what most people would call a “perfect” diet, and I was exercising.
It wasn’t until I quit my really stressful job, that my skin naturally healed itself! Why? Simply because I
removed the biggest stressor in my life, and the flare ups naturally disappeared.
One of Ameer’s tips in his eczema post is to try to go to bed by 10pm. I was never able to sleep before
midnight (even if I tried to sleep at 10pm!), so once I removed the stressor in my life, I was finally also
able to sleep well throughout the night for the first time in my life. The itching reduced dramatically, and
the insomnia that I had dealt with since I was a teenager finally disappeared along with it. Quitting my
job was the best decision I ever made. Although I temporarily lacked money financially, I gained back my
health. And, like they say, health is your greatest wealth.
Eat your Omega 3′s!
One of the other natural remedies is to eat your Omega 3′s! This is what I did: I doubled the dosage from
1-2 grams a day to 3-4 grams a day to reduce the inflammation. Yes – this helps a lot! If you use a good
quality fish oil, you’ll notice that the quality and softness of your skin will change as well (especially if
you have eczema). Make sure to look for good quality fish oil, like Nutrasea.
How I feel today:
To this day, I no longer get any eczema flare ups. With my gut, digestive system, and overall immune
system strengthened, I’m able to eat anything I want without flaring up or getting a tingling sensation
anymore! (Of course, I still try to eat as healthy as possible). I have encountered many doctors who tell
their patients that there is no hope for eczema, and I find that many eczema sufferers lose hope after
hearing this.
6. I hope that as a holistic nutritionist and someone who has overcome eczema myself, that my personal
experience, as well as Ameer’s natural remedies, will be able to provide with new-found hope and a
launch pad for you to improve your skin health. Don’t be alarmed if your healing does not come
overnight. Since it has taken years for bad habits of toxins to accumulate in your body, it will also take
some time for your body to reverse the damage.
