We’ve noticed an increasing interest about oil pulling all across the internet. As
an ancient home remedy practice, it has been done for centuries, and yet little
scientific research has been done regarding its efficacy. Not only it is practiced
in India, but the traditional belief extends as far as Russia.
So what isoil pulling anyway?
Oil pulling, is an oldAyuverdic dental practice where oil is swished inside the
mouth for 15-20 minutes first thing in the morning. This supposedly “pulls” out toxins from your body
(mainly from the salivary glands), thus improving oral and overall health. Usually this is done once or twice a
day on an empty stomach.

• Healthier teeth and gums

How doesit work?
1. Select your oil. Ancient Indians use sesame oil as it has nutrients, reduce dryness of the mouth as well
as anti-inflamatory properties. For modern general practice, you can start with virgin coconut oil as it is
readily available and it tastes mild.
2. Gargle some warm water first, then spit it out.
3. Usual practice is to use a tablespoon of oil. At room temperature, the oil might be at solid phase. For
starters, take in a teaspoon of oil and work your way up each day. Swish the oil around your mouth very
gently –as you will be doing this longer than a regular mouthwash, you won’t want to get a stiff jaw.
4. You may not like the texture at first, the oil doubles in volume as it draws in more saliva and the toxins.
Make sure not to swallow any of the oil as you are putting back the toxins back.
5. After 15-20 mins, spit the oil into the trash can. Never in the sink as it will block the drain when it
solidifies. Swish your mouth with warm water with salt.
6. Finally, brush and floss as normal.

Basically, experts say that there will be no harm in trying this, and you will not lose anything if you don’t.
