2. “the new look” this is very effective because the character has
changed, therefore drawing the reader’s attention because they will
want to know the reason behind the change. The magazine is giving
the impression that the answer to the question will be told especially
when it states that “the stars of 2007’s darkest sequel unmasked!’
which emphasises on the impression given to the audience.
The image used for this magazine cover is brilliant as it shows action yet the
audience is still being engaged with the character as the character is looking
directly at them. The eyes stand out because they are blue and the only time
the colour blue is actually used within the whole of the front cover.
The magazine offers the readers more option that the main topic by
offering a “free Rocky and Eragon poster inside” which will be able
to draw the attention of more readers and therefore increase their
audience range. Also the “+” sign shows that in addition to the free
poster there are other popular topics that are mentioned again to
gain the interest of a wider range of people which would make the
magazine more successful.
The background colour used for the magazine front cover is the same
colours used for the “new look” again all the main features of the front
cover tie in with the main topic of the magazine which is great because
it makes emphasis on the fact that there is a huge change therefore
causing the audience to be drawn in.
The masthead is behind the main image this is effective because
the name o the movie isn’t completely hidden. But it is mostly
effective because again the image is the main focus and the
magazine is trying to draw in the audience to the fact that there is
a new look, and gives them the chance to see the full image.
3. This empire magazine cover uses a wide range of different colours which stand
out because they are completely different from one another. However all of the
colours used are not used too brightly, which gives the idea that they are all as
important as each other in the way that they attract the audience’s.
The main imaged used is positioned in the centre of the page which brings more
attention on it. The quality of the image is really good in making the eyes stand
out, so the audience feel like Edward is actually looking at them, giving the
sense of engaging with the character. The colour of his eyes almost reflects the
colour used on the masthead ‘TWILIGHT: NEW MOON’ which is combining the
two together.
The word “fangtastic” is used which is significantly effective because it links to
the movie and the image of Edward as the front cover. Who we know is a
vampire and vampires have fangs. The magazine cover does very well in linking
the movie in with the content available on the front cover, another example
would be that the characters are addressed through the names of their
characters instead of their real names “EDWARD, BELLA AND JACOB
INTERVIEWED!” this would make the audience feel as if they are engaging with
the actual characters of the movie.
The cover consists of very minimal information about other movies as the focus
of the issue is twilight. However because it does feature stuff from other
movies there’s something for everyone, therefore the magazine could engage
more audience’s.
The cover does well in telling the audience what they will get from buying the
magazine. It shows what will be inside and some extras that will be available for
the buyers. For example it shows that there are “2 bonus covers inside” of the
two other main characters. But there are also “free posters” available.
4. The name of the magazine (EMPIRE) stands out nicely because it is outlined using the
colour green and is filled with a navy colour. The two colours are nothing alike which is
the reason why it stands out so well. Another reason why it stands out is because it is
the largest piece of text shown on the cover.
The catch phrase “THE JONES VS. BATMAN – SUMMER JUST GOT SERIOUS” does very well in catching
the audience attention as the audience will want to know how summer is getting
serious. Also it lets the audience know when the movie will be out which is good.
Underneath the name of the magazine is the masthead ‘THE DARK KNIGHT’ which links
in with both the image and the theme of the magazine as it is based around that movie.
It stands out particularly because it is right underneath the name of the magazine but
also it is also on a large text size. What makes it significantly effective is the fact that the
font used is the actual font used for the movie title and everything else to do with the
movie therefore it is continuous.
The ‘+’ sign shows that the audience is given more of a variety of films to choose from in
case they are not too interested in the main topic. This is good because it means that the
audience is given a choice and its giving the magazine a wider range of audiences.
The colour used for this magazine front cover are used very successfully as they all work
nicely with one another. The colour green is used quite a lot with the text and the image.
The fact that the image and the image both consist of green is very effective in making
the cover stand out. Also the front cover consists of just the right amount of the colour
green, it doesn’t look over used. In addition the colour red used in the maim image
stands out as it is very bright making it seem a lot more like ‘blood’ thereby making the
audience know that the image used is of the villain. Also the red stands out especially
because the person in the image has very pale white skin, which was obviously taken
into account. Furthermore the black used around the eyes is very effective because it
makes the eyes stand out (because they are white) which instantly give the audience the
idea that the person is looking at them, engaging the two together.
5. The main image used for the poster is very effective because it ties in very well
with the title of the film “the possession” . It shows that somebody is possessed
as there is hand coming out of the woman’s mouth. It also does well in not
giving too much away by not exposing the womans face.
The font used for the title is pretty simple and doesn’t stand out too much, this
is so that the audiences focus on the image first and then wonder what the
name of the film is. Which is done intentionally so that the attention is done in
stages. 1. the image 2. the name of the film.
Underneath the title reads “darkness lives inside” which goes perfectly well
with the main image and the title of the film. The poster makes links with all the
conventions to make it clear to the audience that , that is what the film is about
and draws their whole focus on the main ideology.
The credits are positioned at the very bottom of the poster in the smallest font
size so that the audiences attention isn’t from the image and title because
those are advertising it. The credits are just there for extra information.
Intentionally the release date is in red to ensure that the reader will definitely
notice it nor matter what because what’s the point of wanting to se a movie and
not knowing hen it comes out. Also using the colour red as to the rest of the
print on the poster where black and white are used not only make sit stand out
but the colour red is associated with blood and horror
6. The image used is great for this poster. Because of the positions that the two
characters shown are in. straight away you know that the villain is the character
that is stood up because the poster gives him power because of the way he is
stood up with his arms and legs spread. Looks like he is waiting to attack. The
female is also positioned in the middle of the poster however she looks much
smaller than him as she is kneeling down and is looking right at the audience to
show that she needs help and is in trouble. The audience automatically looks
sorry for her as she looks vulnerable. Also the fact that the villains hat covers his
face leaves the audience with a sense of mystery therefore drawing them to go
out and watch the movie.
The tagline “he knows where you sleep” has dramatic effect because it ties in
with the image as he is behind her therefore making the statement look true.
The tagline also give s insight into the film and makes the audience guess that it
has something to do with sleeping especially because the title of the film is
“nightmare on elm street” which doesn’t only give an address but also talks
about nightmares which involve sleeping.
The poster does well in showing that the film is going to be successful by
showing the production companies which are big ones and the audience will
automatically know that it is a good film by looking at who it has been produced
by. One of which being Warner brothers which do both producing and
distributing and are a very successful company which have produced and
distributed movies such as Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes which were huge
successes worldwide.
The poster uses colour very well by making the two characters almost
unidentifiable as they are shown as black shadows of the light coming in from
the back. The colour of the light is orangey/red which brings terror.
The font used is simple and the colour is red to show that it is horror and
brings emphasis on the idea of blood.
